B. ANALYSIS

Q1. What is a polynomial?

Answer: Polynomials are mathematical expression that contains a constant,

variable, and positive whole number exponents.

Q2. What are the types of polynomials?

Answer: The types of polynomials are: monomial, with only one term; binomial
with two terms, trinomial with three terms and polynomials or multinomial with
more than 3 terms.

Q3. How to determine the degree of polynomials with many terms?

Answer: To determine the degree of the polynomial with many terms it is

necessary to identify to get first the degree of each term, the highest degree of
exponent of each term will be the degree of the polynomial.
C. ABSTRACTION
Introduction to polynomials

The teacher will give the definition of a polynomial, shows examples of a

polynomial and emphasizes the operation involve in a polynomial based on the
definition.

Examples:
1. 3a +5b 7c
2. 3abc
3. 4a
4. x7 + 2x4 - 5 + 3x
5. x2 + 2x +5

Types of a Polynomial

1. Monomial- a polynomial of one term which is a constant, a variable or a

product of a constant and variables.
Examples:
a. 3x
b. Y
c. -3ab
d. x
e. 3

2. Binomial- is a polynomial of two terms

Examples:
a. 3a + 2b
b. x + y
c. x - 5xy

3. Trinomial- is a polynomial of three terms.

Examples:
a. 2x+ x - 5x
b. 2mn + 5mn- 15
c. x7 + 2x4 + 5 +

4. Polynomial- if there are more than two to three terms.

Examples:
a. 4.7x8 + 3.1x3 + 9x + 10
b. x2 - 6xy + 9y + 6x + 1
c. x2 + 2x +5xy + 3y

Degrees of Polynomials

Degree is the highest power of a variable or the highest sum of powers of

variable for two or more variables. The degree of the term is determined by the
power of the variable part.
1. Constant
The degree of a non-zero constant is 0.
Examples:
a. 5
b. 7
c. -17
d. -4.2
e. 34

2. Monomial
The degree of a monomial is the sum of the exponents of its variables.
Examples:
a. 2mn- the degree is 2 +1=3
b. x7- the degree is 7
c. 5mn- the degree is 2 +2= 4
d. 4.7x8 the degree is 8
e. 60x8 y - the degree is 8 + 3= 11

3. Polynomials in one variables

The degree is the highest exponent of the variable
Examples:
a. 3x20 x10 + x9 5 - the degree is 20
b. x + 7x 2x
4 3 - the degree is 4
c. x + 8
15 - the degree is 15
d. y + 8y
17 25 - the degree is 25

4. Polynomials with two or more terms and variables.

4.a The degree with respect to a certain variable is the highest degree of that
variable.
4.b The degree of the polynomial is the degree of the term with the highest
degree.

Examples:
a. 23x4y5z16 + 17x3y z10 x8 + xy9
The degree with respect to x is 8
The degree with respect to y is 9
The degree with respect to z 16
The degree of the polynomial is 25

b. 5x10y + 11x2y5 + 3x5y3

The degree with respect to x is 10
The degree with respect to y is 5
The degree of the polynomial is 11

c. 3x20y10 6x17y13 45x19y11

The degree with respect to x is 20
The degree with respect to y is 13
The degree of the polynomial is 30
D. APPLICATION

Student Activity

The teacher will give the students sets of polynomials. The students will
differentiate if it is a monomial, binomial, trinomial or a polynomial. They will also
identify the degree of the polynomial.

1. 9x2 + 3x
2. 100k9 + k16 k3
3. 10k4 + 7k2 k
4. 8n4 + 5n3 2n2 8n
5. 4x 9x9 + 4x3 5x4
6. 1 m + m2 + m5 m7 + m9
7. 8x10y5 + x2y5 + 3x9y3
8. 5a3b 9a2 + 15b2
9. 8
10. y17 + 8y25

E. EVALUATION

Write M if the polynomial is a Monomial, B if it is a Binomial, T if it is a

Trinomial and P if it is Polynomial with multiple terms. Identify the degree of the
Polynomial.
