3| BEFORE RE-CONNECTING THE OIL FEED LINE, pour in a little engine oil. This will
prevent the crankshaft from turning dry on starting. The same can be done in the air inlet to
lubricate the compressor bore.

REBUILDING PROCEDURE
Please note that all ess compressors tted to VOLVO Trucks & Buses (LK.3930 , LP.4825
1| , LP.4930 & LP.4934) may have the ESS governing system disabled and an alternative
unloading system installed.
These modications disable the internal ESS governor system altogether and replace it with
2| an external Unloader Valve or Air Dryer / Unloader. This prevents the internal governing
system from oscillating and wearing out the sliding pin slots. These worn slots and conse-
quent valve/fulcrum damage are the cause of most premature failures in the ESS compres-
sor range.
These are simple modications that can be correctly specied once the pipe diameter is
3| measured at the position where the unloader valve or air dryer is to be tted. Please see
the following detailed pages of the various modications that can be done
REBUILDING PROCEDURE
This modication disables the internal ESS governor system altogether and replaces it with an ex-
1| ternal unloader valve. This prevents the internal governing system from oscillating and wearing out

sor range.

A. Remove the existing governor valve from the vehicule or plug the supply to the governor at the
wet tank (recommended option as the governor & piping can then be left in place).
B. Plug the unloader port of the compressor with a vented M22 x 1.5 mm plug (small hole).
C. Cut into the compressor delivery line and t the unloader valve T.975.303... (as far from
compressor as possible but must be before the wet tank and circuit protection valve).
The compressor will now pump continuously. When system pressure is reached (adjustable through
the new unloader valve), the unloader valve will open. Air being pumped by the compressor will vent
to atmosphere (the unloader valve has a check valve in delivery port to prevent stored air escaping).
When system air pressure falls below the unloader cut in pressure, the unloader valve will close the
exhaust and recommence pumping.

A. Disconnect the existing governor valve signal line from the compressor and seal it with a vented
M22 x 1.5mm plug.
B. For an existing air dryer there are two options. Where the compressor and air dryer have separa-
te signal lines, plug the compressor signal port on the governor valve. If the air dryer signal has been
Td off the compressor leg of the T piece or replace the T piece with a straight connector.
C. For a new air dryer installation, move the governor signal line from the compressor to the air
dryer.
The compressor will now pump continuously. When system pressure is reached (adjustable through
the existing governor), the governor valve will signal the air dryer. The air dryer exhaust valve will
open and the purge cycle will start. The air dryer exhaust valve remains open and air being pumped
by the compressor vents to atmosphere through the air dryer (the air dryer has a check valve in deli-
very port to prevent stored air escaping). When system air pressure falls below the governors cut in
pressure, the governor valve will cut off the signal and the air dryer will recommence pumping

to atmosphere (the unloader valve has a check valve in delivery port to prevent stored air escaping).
When system air pressure falls below the unloader cut in pressure, the unloader valve will close the
exhaust and recommence pumping.
