Lesson Idea Name: Animal & Plant cells

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed:
S5L3. Students will diagram and label parts of various cells (plant, animal, single-celled, multi-
celled).
a. Use magnifiers such as microscopes or hand lenses to observe cells and their structure.
b. Identify parts of a plant cell (membrane, wall, cytoplasm, nucleus, chloroplasts) and of an animal
cell (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus) and determine the function of the parts.
c. Explain how cells in multi-celled organisms are similar and different in structure and function to
single-celled organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed:

2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments
incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to
develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Before the SRT activity, we will watch a BrainPop video introducing plant & animal cells.
The students will then be given a diagram of a plant cell, along with a diagram of an animal cell. We will go
over each part that is in each cell, along with looking at the diagram to create a Venn-Diagram of what they
have in common and their differences. The students will work in groups for this section, coming up with as
many points as possible. We will also go over multi-cell organisms, along with single-cell organisms. The
students will have prior knowledge and instruction over the material covered in the quiz, which will be a
formative assessment to test their knowledge.
I will introduce the activity by discussing that we will be having a quiz and that it is to see what they have
learned so far, but to do the best they can so we can see our next step of what to focus on.

They will be able to play with Socrative and understand how it works so they are comfortable with the
software.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
Assess prior knowledge Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) To illuminate common
misconceptions Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) Summative assessment of content knowledge Test preparation
Survey/Poll Discussion starter Homework collection Other (please explain):

During the activity, students will be work individually on devices for this quiz and must complete the whole
quiz for completion. The teacher will be assisting if extra help is needed, but the students are urged to
complete the task on their own. The materials needed are access to Socrative, on a computer, iPad, laptop,
etc. The activity will last approximately 20 minutes, giving extra time if the students need any.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

Multiple choice Multiple select True/False Yes/No
Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

Yes No
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not?
This gives the students immediate feedback and assistance if they do not know the answer. This gives them
the ability to view the answer, rather than not know the correct answer, which could help them understand
the content and have a better understanding further on with the material.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, the students will be allowed to work in groups assigned by the teacher and discuss their
answers. These will be differentiated groups that will be decided based on the content that the students
understood, and also the questions that the students all struggled with.
They will complete test corrections, which will be done for each question they missed. They will be given a
new diagram of a plant cell and an animal cell after to test their knowledge and how much they learned.
After this formative assessment, along with the test corrections, the students will use this knowledge to
complete a project in regards to the content.

How will the data be used?

Student Response and Assessment Tools

The data collected will be used towards a quiz grade for the unit on cells. This information will be shared with
the students, and their parents can also see each of their childs individual progress. Their grade will be
representative of the content they know so far, and the unit will continue, as this formative assessment, and
the correct answers, will be used to complete a summative assessment and project due at the end of this
unit. There will be a poll of each question missed and I will go over the important information to help the
students with the content. I will use this data to differentiate instruction and break the students in to further
groups depending on which parts they struggle with. This way, they can help each other and focus on the
specific questions they all need help with.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I am using this as a formative assessment, but in a format that I have not used. I think that this quiz using
technology will help my students, along with myself, see what needs to be addressed and what the students
have learned. I hope that this will give me a more direct representation of what the students know, and will
also give them the opportunity to take a quiz online where their answers can be compared with other
students without them possibly feeling embarrassed as it can be anonymous on the board for the whole class
to see.
