Introduction
In this report I will be evaluating and comparing two Content Management Systems,
also known as CMS.
The two systems that I will be comparing are the two most used Content
Management Systems by students, since this is most relevant for me at this moment
in time. The two systems are Wix and Weebly.
These are two systems with which I have worked both for schools and for
professional reasons.
1. Functionality
First of all both of these websites are very similar and have mostly the same
functionalities but there are some significant differences between them.
First of all both websites start with the same idea. When you want to build a website
the website lets you choose a general theme for your website. They have themes for
blogs, portfolios, events, web shops, etc Once you have chosen your theme you
can start designing your website to your personal preferences.
One of the biggest differences between these two systems is the freedom you have
while building your website. On Wix you can add items anywhere on your webpage.
You can add pictures and text without being constraint to fixed places to put these
items. On Weebly there is much less creative freedom. When you want to add a
picture or a block of text you have to do it on the locations the systems has
predetermined for you.
One of the features of Weebly that is better than Wix is that you can change your
theme without have to re-insert all of you content. Weebly takes the text you have
written and the other content you have inserted and places it in a new layout. When
you try to do this with Wix you have to completely re-insert everything you have
done.
Both websites work with a click-and-drag system to add features to the webpage.
They all have similar things which you can add to the website, although Wix list of
addable items is slightly larger in the standard package. With Weebly you can add
more items by using apps from Weebly itself but for a lot of these apps you have to
pay on a monthly basis.
1. Evaluation report.
Weebly
Pros
Ease of use: One of the more user-friendly interfaces out there, Weebly offers a What
you see is what you get, simple drag and drop editor- you wont need to dig around to find all of
the features/options.
Flexibility: Being able to change your template, export your content and access the
HTML/CSS code to make unique customizations to your site are big positives for Weebly- placing
the website building power back in users hands.
Weebly App Center: With over 200 apps available (both free and paid), Weebly offers a
range of tools and widgets to boost your site, from simple forms to more advanced page layouts,
there is an app for all of your websites needs.
Cons
Limited Features: The downside to the simplicity of Weeblys editor is that its range of
features and customizable elements is smaller than that of other builders. Weebly do not update
their editor with new features as often as other builders either- so this really is a platform for users
looking for just the basics.
No Blank Canvas option: Weebly makes you select a pre-designed theme, meaning you
can not build a site on Weebly from scratch. You do have the option to upload a 3rd-party created
theme or dabble with the code to customize your site. However, users with a clear vision for the
design of their site may be frustrated that they can not create it themselves using the regular
editor.
Old-fashioned free images: The images gallery on Weebly is less impressive than major
competitors. For one, the free stock images seem dated and for the most part would not fit a
modern website. And secondly, the paid images (which are more modern), cost $5 each (you
could probably find such images cheaper on a stock image website).
Bottom Line
Find Out If Weebly is Right For Your Business
Offering a simpler, easier to use editor than many other website builders, Weebly is a
great option for fuss-free, drag-and-drop website building. Weeblys platform is
intuitive and many elements can be completely customized, even allowing you to
import a 3rd-party theme. However, with a limited range of site-building features,
Weebly lacks the added oomph offered by its leading competitors that feature more
elements and integrations as standard.
Wix
Pros
Largest range of templates: Wix offers the widest range of professional-looking templates
from all the drag and drop builders, as well as a blank canvas editor, offering users a high degree
of flexibility when building a site.
New Features: Wixs editor is updated on a monthly basis, with new elements, tools and
features constantly being added to keep your website looking fresh and running optimally.
App Market: Wix offers the most comprehensive app marketplace full of add-ons, widgets
and many more ways to enhance your website. These apps, such as Wix Stores for E-commerce,
Wix Albums for photographers and Wix Bookings, allow you to add professional features to your
site at minimal cost and with no coding required, just a quick click of a button.
Cons
Template flexibility: Once you have chosen a template and started to build your site, you
can not change the template- so be sure you have selected the right one before you start creating
your site.
Content Export: Unlike other website builders, Wix does not offer content export
functionality, meaning if you wish to move your site to a different platform you would need to
manually copy and paste the content.
Endless Options May Seem Overwhelming: Having a huge range of features is generally
seen as a positive, allowing users to customize their site to their hearts content. However, some
users may find these options (and the time needed to find them all) quite overwhelming and
therefore should be prepared to take the time learn and understand the platform before building
their website.
Bottom Line
Find Out If Wix is Right For Your Business
Wix ticks most of the boxes when it comes to the full website building process. From
templates to website elements, domain names to payment plans, Wix offers the
widest range of options for all business types. And whilst you will need to spend the
time to fully grasp Wixs editor, it is just another sign of the consistent improvements
and addition of new features that Wix works hard to offer- something that all users
benefit from.
1. Experiment
I have been working with Weebly for the last year and a half. I find it very easy to use.
In the beginning the learning curve is a bit steep but after working with the system for
a couple of hours it is a very easy system to use. The biggest problem I encountered
is the lack of freedom when placing items onto your website. The predetermined
layouts dont let you put pictures or text anywhere you want on the page. You have to
put it in fixed locations. This makes sites made with Weebly very clean and
minimalistic but it also makes them very simple and not as professional as other
websites made with other CMSs.
2. Pricing
Wix and Weebly are both free to use unless you want an upgraded version of the
system.
Weebly has 4 different premium packages.
o Performance
46,00 dollar/ month.
This package gives you advanced e-commerce and marketing
functions to grow your business.
o Business
35,00 dollar/ month.
This package gives you fully integrated e-commerce for small
businesses and shops.
o Pro
18,00 dollar/ month
This package gives you more professional functions such as
search function on the site and video backgrounds.
o Starter
14,00 dollar/month
This package lets you connect your own domain to your website,
you also get better insights on your websites.
Wix has 5 different premium packages.
o VIP
24,50/ month
With this package you can do 10 mailing campaigns / month, you
can connect an existing domain, you get premium support, an
own favicon, etc
o eCommerce
16,17/ month
With this package you can connect an existing domain, get
premium support, an own favicon, etc
o Unlimited
12,42/ month
This package lets you connect an existing domain, get premium
support, an own favicon, etc
o Combo
8,25/ month
This package lets you connect an existing domain, premium
support and an existing favicon
o Connect domain
4,08/ month
This lets you connect an existing domain and gives you premium
support.
Conclusion.
Wix and Weebly both are very good and simple CMSs but they still have a lot of
differences.
At this moment Wix clearly is some steps ahead of Weebly. Wix has more creative
freedom, more designed templates, more apps to use and overall more functionality.
But Weebly is good in its own way. Weebly lets you make a clean and simple website
with just enough features to suit your needs, but with Wix you can make more
advanced websites with a lot more different functionalities compared to Weebly.
So overall Wix is the better CMS of these two systems.
