Unit Title: Democracy and the Bill of Rights Name: Peter Wannebo
Content Area: American Civics and Government Grade Level: 11-12
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
12.2.1 Discuss the meaning and importance of each of the right guaranteed under the Bill of Rights and how each is secured (e.g.,
freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, petition, privacy).
- Students will understand the origins and meaning of the Bill of Rights as a document
- Students will explore each of the Amendments within the Bill of Rights
- will examine the relationship between the individual rights and how they create a civil and free society as a whole.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:


- Examine how each of the Amendments in the Bill of Rights help shape our everyday lives.
- Try to examine the importance of each in its relationship to the others.
- Choose one, or a pair, and defend their importance in America over the others.
- Students will utilize PowerPoint, or Google Slides to create a presentation to debate their choices authority over other Rights.
- After all presentations, students will have a chance to have an open forum debate, to take a stand for their choice.

Unit Summary:
Within this unit, students will be learning about the U.S. Constitution, namely the Bill of Rights, and its importance to every American life. Students will be going
in depth in both in both learning about the individual amendments within the Bill of Rights, and taking a stance on the level of importance from one to another.
Students will then take a stance and defend it in an open forum debate with their fellow classmates.
