Weekly Theme: Monsters- real vs. pretend
Small Group
All will begin with calendar time as a class and then break into small groups with given teacher for mini lesson/ activity. Students will rotate throughout the
week each small group.
Calendar
Objective:
Using a calendar and numbers, the student will fill in a calendar for the current date with 100% accuracy.
Using symbols and a chart, the student will identify the weather outside with 100% accuracy.
Using name cards and verbal responses, the student will match his classmates written name with the person 80%accuracy.
Procedures:
Calendar *calendar helper points to said numbers, days, switches day of week, writes number on board*
o Month, syllable clap
o Count days, add the current day

Weather

Student will look outside window, determine what the weather is, pick corresponding picture, put picture on weather board.

o Name helper will hold up names, the class/ student will identify the student that belongs with the name, sing song

Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday
Small Group #1- Teacher
Skittle Sort
Objective: Given candies, the student will sort out candies by color with 80% accuracy.
Procedures:
o Review real vs. pretend (monsters). Some things can be pretend, they are not real. They are something we make up using our imagination
when we play or tell stories. Things that can be pretend are monsters, ninjas, dragons, etc. If something is real, it means that we can touch it
with our hands. Give examples of real items.
o Give out monster face sheet
o Discus whether picture is real or pretend.
o Sort out skittles by color on worksheet. Discuss parts of the monster that are being covered in candy (ie. mouth, we have mouths too, we use
them to ____. Allow students to further knowledge in concept of same vs. different by discussing amount of skittles colors between
students (ie. Sam has 10 green skittles and Tina has 2 green skittles do they have the same amount of skittles? Sam has green skittles and
Tina has green skittles do they have the same color of skittles? Etc.).
Small Group #2- IA
Paper Bag Monster
Objective: Using art supplies, student will create a monster to represent an imaginative idea with 100% accuracy.
Procedures:
o Review real vs. pretend (monsters). Some things can be pretend, they are not real. They are something we make up using our imagination
when we play or tell stories. Things that can be pretend are monsters, ninjas, dragons, etc. If something is real, it means that we can touch it
with our hands. Give examples of real items.
o Students create monster of own using art supplies such as paper bag, feathers, google eyes, markers, etc. to represent their own pretend
monster.
Teacher example will be provided so students understand expectation.
Small Group #3- IA
Monster Slime (sensory activity)
Wednesday
Large group, language lesson with SLP on campus. SLP will create and deliver a mini lesson to whole class (short story read and activity following). Teacher will
monitor student behavior and progress throughout lesson. Teacher will aid struggling students as needed throughout SLPs lesson.
Friday
Library day. Teacher will lead students to library, monitor behavior at the library, and aid in picking out appropriate books for students to gallery walk &
read at table. Teacher will then help students check out their book chosen to take back to class.

Social Skills- focusing attention


Tuesday & Thursday
Simon Says- Following given directions
o Teacher will hone in on idea of focusing attention by introducing hand motion of pointing to her own eyes. Students will copy teacher. This
will then become a universal signal for the classroom to silence voices and give teacher their attention when signal is given by the teacher.

Literacy Circle Time


This lesson time will begin by reading the book designated for the week, followed by a mini lesson to build off the book.
Conversation between students and teacher will occur between book reading and activity each time:

are monsters, ninjas, dragons, etc. If something is real, it means that we can touch it with our hands, see it in front of us with our eyes, hear it speaking or
making a noise with our ears, etc. They are things that are living like people, our pets, etc.

Monster Match & Discussion
o Objective: Given picture cards, student will match like pictures together with 70% accuracy.
o Key ideas:
This lesson focuses heavily on the students ability to identify like pictures. This will also allow for in depth discussion about pretend and
real concepts for students.

Feed the Monster- colors
o Objective: Given assorted colored balls, student will sort balls by given color with 75% accuracy.
o Key Ideas:
Some things can be pretend, they are not real. They are something we make up using our imagination when we play or tell stories.
Things that can be pretend are monsters, ninjas, dragons, etc. If something is real, it means that we can touch it with our hands, see it
in front of us with our eyes, hear it speaking or making a noise with our ears, etc. They are things that are living like people, our pets,
etc.
This lesson is geared towards the student identifying and sorting basic colors. This activity involves the students feeding a monster the
colored balls. By feeding the monster, students who struggle with fine motor skills will get some extra practice for fine tuning in as
well. This lesson can be modified for various student abilities: ie. more advanced will count out colors being fed for additional
difficulty/ practice, while others might sort fewer numbers of balls or colors presented.
Tuesday

Monster Trace
o Objective: Given a tracing page and marker, student will trace lines with 4/5 accuracy.
o Key Ideas:
Some things can be pretend, they are not real. They are something we make up using our imagination when we play or tell stories.
Things that can be pretend are monsters, ninjas, dragons, etc. If something is real, it means that we can touch it with our hands, see it
in front of us with our eyes, hear it speaking or making a noise with our ears, etc. They are things that are living like people, our pets,
etc.
This lesson is wonderful for students with beginning handwriting skills as well as those that struggle with fine motor activities. Students
are given a tracing page with various monsters playing sports on it that need to get back to their sports ball. The students will trace
over the various line patterns (straight, curved, zig zag, etc.).

WH Questions & Monster Face
o Objective: Given facial features and glue, student will create a monster face with 75% accuracy of facial feature placement.
o Key Ideas:
This lesson is largely geared towards body awareness, knowledge of the five senses, and the use of a students imagination. WH Questions
such as what does your monster smell with? NOSE. What is your monster smelling today? STUDENT RESPONSE. Where is your monster at
while hes smelling the ____? Etc. This also allows for the students to further knowledge of real versus pretend, how many eyes does
your monster have? SR of 7. Do you have 7 eyes? Etc.
Wednesday

Count & Clip Monsters
o Objective: Through a partner activity, student will interact with peer and exchange 3 positive talking points (such as can you help me? Thats
right! Thanks for helping me. Lets count together. Etc.) in a single data taking period.
o Key Ideas:
Students will be given cards with various amounts of monster pictures. At the bottom of the cards are three numbers. Using a paper clip,
students will count the number of monsters and place the clip on the corresponding number. Students will be paired up for this activity.
This will allow for positive interactions between one another as well as build on developing social skills such as turn taking, speech,
helping one another, and more. This lesson also appeals to those needing fine motor help by having to pinch and place the paper clips
on the cards.

Monster Initials
o Objective: Using a letter and google eyes, student will pick up and place google eye on letter in 80% of presented opportunities.
o Key Ideas:
This activity is geared largely towards students building fine motor skills by grasping and placing small objects. This also aides in letter
recognition and self-help skills if students need to ask for help when struggling with the small google eyes.

Eye See You!
o Objective: Given a blank monster face and google eyes, student will count using one to one correspondence with 75% accuracy.
o Key Ideas:
Teacher will give a number to student, student will count and place google eyes onto blank monster face to represent number of eyes
given by teacher. This activity allows for one to one correspondence skill building as well as differentiated instruction for students
needs.

Sequencing
o Objective: Given pictures of events from story, student will organize events of the story with 80% accuracy.
o Key Ideas:
Students will analyze and order events from story read. Students will first complete activity as a group; each student will be given a card
to responsible for when ordering as a group. Cards will then be reviewed for order by paging through the story as a group. Students will
then complete ordering on own.
Friday

Feed the Monster- shapes
o Objective: Given assorted colored shapes, student will sort shapes by given category with 75% accuracy.
This lesson is geared towards the student identifying and sorting basic shapes. This activity involves the students feeding a monster the
colored shapes. By feeding the monster, students who struggle with fine motor skills will get some extra practice for fine tuning in as
well. This lesson can be modified for various student abilities: ie. more advanced will count out shapes or sort by color as well being
fed for additional difficulty/ practice, while others might sort fewer numbers of shapes presented.

Count & Match # Cards
o Objective: Using number and picture cards, student will identify numerical value for corresponding picture card with 75% accuracy.
o Key Ideas:
This lesson will hone in on students ability to again count objects and identify numbers that correspond to one another. This activity is
meant to be a partner activity where students must go around the room to find their buddy pair some students will have a card with
a number on it and others will have cards that have the monster pictures to count, the students must find the buddy pair that belongs
with their said card. This activity is one that is great for students on various levels as some will simply have to identify the number shown
while others have to actually count the pictures and identify the number associated with the amount shown. This lesson is also wonderful
for students struggling with gross motor skills as they have to get up and move about the room (ie. walking/ hopping/ sliding feet/ etc.
to find partner around room).
