ABSTRACT

Background: laparotomy is an operation performed on the abdominal area.

Generally, patients who undergo this surgery are severe pain sensation depending on the
area of the areas in the incision. The sensation of pain is felt influenced by patients'
knowledge about pain management, one nonpharmacologic pain. For patients' knowledge
about pain management affect patient behavior in anticipation of pain.

Objective: To determine the relationship between knowledge about non-

pharmacological pain management and reduction of postoperative pain in patients
laparotomy in dr. Abdul Aziz Singkawang.

Methods: in this study using a non-experimental cross-sectional. The sampling

technique using a questionnaire containing 20 items of knowledge questions and 10 items
of questions by a decrease in the level of pain in patients with postoperative laparotomy.
Number of samples in this study were 33 respondents from patients who have undergone
surgery laparotomy. Data were analyzed using Chi Square.

Results: For the chi-square hypothesis testing indicate that Ho is rejected and Ha
accepted means there is a fairly strong correlation between knowledge about non-
pharmacological pain management and reduction of postoperative pain in patients
laparotomy in dr. Abdul Aziz Singkawang with significance level (a) was taken at 5%
obtained p value = 0.001.

Conclusion: Increased patient knowledge about non-pharmacological pain

management may affect the activity of the patient affect the activity of patients in the
control of pain, so that patients feel a sensation of pain is not too severe. Nurses can
improve patients' knowledge with structured health education, facilitate the provision of
information about non-pharmacological pain management and monitoring related to the
implementation of the empowerment of nursing care in patients with postoperative
laparotomy.
