anaesthesia section: student essay prize

Submission deadline: Sunday 1 April 2018


Meeting date: Friday 1 June 2018
Prize: 500
Open to: All medical students at recognised teaching institutions within UK
The essay may describe original research, audit or a case report and has no set word limit. The paper must avoid
headings, acknowledgements, names or institutions or anything that may reveal the author's identity. Applicants
must have played an important part in the relevant research and must have personally written the essay for
submission. Please note in order to be awarded the prize the successful candidate must be present at the
event.

cardiothoracic section: case presentation

clinical forensic & legal medicine section postgraduate prize

Submission deadline: Saturday 23 September 2017


Meeting date: Saturday 21 October 2017
Prize: 250
Open to: Postgraduate students who have been working for qualifications in forensic and legal medicine or
medical law. Students studying other specialties may submit their work to be considered for presentation
purposes but are not eligible for the prize.
Poster designs should be submitted electronically for consideration, under 2MB in Power Point or PDF format.
Posters accepted should be printed on A1 size for presentation on the meeting date. Please ensure your entry is
anonymous - i.e. your name and the name of the institution are not mentioned or included in the poster.

Open to: Undergraduate students in law or medicine.
Candidates should submit posters which are then shortlisted for display at the meeting. Posters should be
submitted a month in advance of the meeting and the winner will be announced at the meeting. The award is
open to anyone who is in the process of undertaking or has completed an undergraduate course in a clinical
forensic or legal field related to forensic medicine.
Poster designs should be submitted electronically for consideration, under 2MB in Power Point or PDF format.

clinical immunology & allergy section: president's prize

Submission deadline: Sunday 7 January 2018


Meeting date: Monday 26 February 2018
Prize: Oral presentation: 1st prize: 300; 2nd prize: two prizes of 100.
Open to: Training grade doctors, young scientists and medical students (not above Specialist Registrar, Grade B
Clinical Scientist or equivalent grade) with an immunological or allergy component of their clinical research.
The work to be presented must be original and substantially the candidate's own. Abstracts (not exceeding 250
words) should be submitted with an immunology and allergy element along with a supporting letter from a
supervisor.
Please note that shortlisted candidates will be asked to give an oral presentation.

Open to: Medical students and trainees
Medical students and trainees are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words on either a literature
review or case study on urticaria.

The abstracts should be clearly structured and should include the title of the poster; the presenting authors name,
any other authors and their professional role and affiliation.
Shortlisted applicants posters should be printed on A1 size for presentation.

critical care medicine section: student elective prize

Submission deadline: Sunday 2 April 2017


Meeting date: To be confirmed
Prize: up to 1000 and a year's free RSM membership
Open to: UK medical students undertaking an elective or overseas observership as a recognised course
component of their final year MBBS/MBPhD studies during the 2016-17 academic year. Also open to Non RSM
members.
Applicants should submit a statement of no more than 500 words outlining the purpose of their elective or
observership and its relevance to critical care medicine. A summary of where and when the placement will be
taken should be provided, along with full details of any other scholarships, awards, bursaries and financial
support procured for the purposes of the placement. The application should be accompanied by a letter of
support from current institution or from local placement.

Judging will be by a panel drawn from the Critical Care Medicine Section Council. The winner will be required to
give a 15 minute presentation at a Critical Care Medicine meeting following completion of the elective.

emergency medicine section: research and innovation prize

Submission deadline: Sunday 10 December 2017

Prize: 500
Open to: Anyone carrying out original research or innovation in the field of Emergency Medicine
Applications are invited from anyone carrying out original research or innovation in the field of emergency
medicine. This could include equipment, software or management projects relevant to emergency medicine.

Applications should consist of a summary of the project, its relevance to emergency medicine and what the prize
money would be spent on (max 800 words).

The winning applicant will be invited to present their work at a future meeting of the Emergency Medicine Section
once the project is completed.

Prize: Two prizes of 500 and a year's free RSM membership
Open to: Medical students
This prize is to contribute towards the cost of an elective abroad, with the intention of gaining experience in the
practice of emergency medicine. Applications should provide details of the proposed elective abroad in no more
than 1000 words.

After returning from the elective, the winner will be invited to give a presentation at one of the Section's meetings.

prize

Prizes for medical students: 1st place: 100, 2nd place: 50
Open to: Medical students and trainees
Medical students and trainees are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 250 words outlining the nature
and purpose of their poster presentation.

Abstracts should include the title of the poster, the names of presenting and other authors and their professional
role and affiliation.

The abstracts should be clearly structured and can describe original research, a literature review or case studies.
The abstract and poster should be relevant to one of the topics to be discussed in the 37th Primary Care Update.

Shortlisted applicants will be given a free place for Wednesday 13 September 2017 and their posters should be
printed on A1 size for presentation.

Meeting date: Wednesday 13 September 2017

Word count: 2,500 - 3,000
Open to: GP registrars, postgraduate students based in primary care, medical students and other
undergraduates from professional groups involved in primary care and patients with experiences from primary
care.
Over the course of a three year rotation each of the following will be the theme for one year.

1. An account of an audit or research project carried out in primary care.


2. A reflective account of a health consultation in your primary care practice.
3. A reflective account of an example of team working in primary care.

This prize will be awarded to the best 5000 word essay on any aspect of ageing. This is awarded in alternate

Open to: Students and practitioners of medicine, nursing, social care and allied healthcare professionals within 5
years of qualification
The Geriatrics & Gerontology Section invites students and practitioners within 5 years of qualification to submit
an entry for the annual Presidents essay prize.

The essay, a literature review and discussion, should be maximum 3000 words (excluding references) on any
aspect of ageing or the health and care of older people.
The most successful candidate will be awarded one years membership of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Open to: This prize is open to students, trainees and 'other' for all healthcare, allied health and other health
professionals. RSM members and Non-members are welcome to apply.
Submit an abstract of no more than 250 words outlining the nature and purpose of your poster presentation.

Abstracts should be clearly structured and can describe original research, a literature review or case study
relating to one of the topics addressed at the Global ageing: Challenges and opportunities meeting on
Monday 24 Tuesday 25 April 2017.
All shortlisted applicants will be given a free place to the entire conference where their poster will also be
presented. All presenters will receive a certificate and first prize will be awarded by a panel of judges.

Prize: 4 prizes of up to 1200 to cover accommodation and overseas travel to the RSM. Winners will receive a
free place to attend the Global ageing: Challenges and opportunities conference on Monday 24 Tuesday 25
April 2017
Open to: This prize is open to students, trainees and 'other' for all healthcare, allied health and other health
professionals. RSM members and Non-members are welcome to apply.
This travel bursary is to support overseas delegates who wish to attend the Global ageing: Challenges and
opportunities conference at the Royal Society of Medicine on Monday 24 Tuesday 25 April 2017.
Applicants must submit a statement of no more than 500 words outlining why they wish to attend and how it will
benefit their career. An up-to-date CV, an endorsement letter and a summary of travel costs should also be
provided.

history of medicine section: norah schuster essay prize

Submission deadline: Monday 27 November 2017


Meeting date: Wednesday 4 April 2018
Prize: 100 voucher and a year's free RSM membership
Open to: Pre-clinical, clinical medical and dental students. Please note that you must be a medical or dental
undergraduate.
This prize will be awarded for the best essay or essays submitted on any subject related to the history of
medicine, including medical science.

Essays should be between 3,000 - 5,000 words and the standard should be comparable to a third year
dissertation. A 500-word summary should also be submitted along with the full essay. This should not merely be
an abstract: it should outline not only the topic under discussion, the aims and principal conclusions of your
research, but also the sources you have consulted. Please do not include your name within the body of the essay
or abstract. Preliminary short-listing of the essays will be performed on the basis of these summaries.

lipids, metabolism & vascular risk section: president's prize


Submission deadline: Submissions for this academic year have now closed. 2018 submission deadline to be
confirmed.
Meeting date: To be confirmed
Prize: 1st prize = 300, 2nd prize = 200, poster prize = 100
Open to: Trainee Healthcare Professionals and Undergraduate or Graduate Research Students, working in
clinical practice or in basic or clinical research in any area of medicine or science related to the remit of the
Lipids, Metabolism and Vascular Risk.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words are welcomed for original research, audit, survey, case report or case
series undertaken by the applicant in the field of lipids, metabolism & vascular risk.

Submissions will be judged and the top 8 shortlisted submissions will be invited to present their work at Lipids,
Metabolism & Vascular Risk Section President's Prize meeting on Friday 9 September. Delegates will also be
invited to produce an A1 poster to be judged on the day.

At this meeting all presentations will be scored again and 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes awarded by the President at the
end of the meeting.

Candidates should ensure they are available on the meeting for the Lipids, Metabolism & Vascular Risk Section
President's Prize meeting.

maternity & the newborn forum: basil lee bursary for innovation in communication

Bursary: 500 and a years membership to the RSM if you are a student or money deducted from the
membership fee.
Open to: Students, trainees and other professionals who specialise in maternity and/ or surrounding disciplines
who are registered in the UK. Please note those who work for commercial operations will not be eligible for the
bursary.
This bursary is to enable the applicant to develop their new media skills which relate to the subject of maternity or
care of the newborn.
Entrants will need to submit the following:

A description of the innovative way they have communicated/plan to communicate to mothers and fathers on
a topic in the field of maternity care and how they will further develop this or their skills with the bursary
money
Entries can take a variety of forms such as a short video, an app, pictures, animations or people telling their
stories to communicate the topic
A summary of how the bursary will be spent
An up to date CV
The bursary winner will be invited to present at the Maternity and the Newborn Forum Section
meeting on Tuesday 15 May 2018.
Please note the successful candidate will be expected to submit a summary of how the bursary was used and a
short paragraph on the benefit of winning the bursary to feature in the Maternity and the Newborn Forum enews

This bursary is to honour Luke Zander a founding member of the Forum and an innovator in maternity care. The
bursary is to enable healthcare professionals, students and others who are registered in the UK as a student to
progress their research in the field of maternity care or care of the newborn.
Entrants will need to submit a summary of their current research and how the prize money will be spent if
awarded (750 words maximum) as well as an up to date CV.
The winner will be invited to present at the next Maternity & the newborn forum section meeting on Thursday 2
November 2017.

Bursary: One prize of 750 to cover overseas travel or 500 to cover travel within the UK and a years
membership to the RSM if you are a student or money deducted from the membership fee.
Open to: Students, trainees and other professionals who specialise in maternity and/ or surrounding disciplines
who are registered in the UK. Please note those who work for commercial operations will not be eligible for the

This bursary is to honour Wendy Savage, a long standing member of the Forum and an innovator in maternity
care. The bursary is to enable the applicant to attend a conference to present a paper based on their research in
the field of maternity care or care of the newborn.

A paper of no more than 750 words that will be presented at the conference (this can be in draft format)
A description of the conference, the benefit that this will have to the recipient and a summary of travel costs
either in the UK or overseas (of no more than 750 words)

Monday 5 March 2018.

nephrology section: david oliveira medical student award

Prize: 200
Open to: Any students in nephrology and wider specialties
The section invites medical students to submit clinical abstracts in the area of clinical research, case series or
individual case histories. Clinical cases or pedigrees should demonstrate novel clinical findings, illustrate classic
conditions in new or unusual ways, and illuminate or expand knowledge concerning physiology, cell biology,
genetics, radiology, or molecular mechanisms. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words.

Submissions will be shortlisted for oral presentation at a Section meeting. The prize of 200 will be awarded to
the best 15 minute presentation, with an additional five minutes of discussion at the presentation meeting.

obstetrics & gynaecology section: dame josephine barnes award

Open to: All medical undergraduate students
The title of the essay this year is to be confirmed and essays should be no longer than 1000 words. References
should be in Vancouver style.
Submissions from medical undergraduates are invited for the Dame Josephine Barnes essay prize in obstetrics
and gynaecology. The winner of the prize will receive 100 and will be expected to make a twenty minute
presentation on the topic of their essay at the Royal Society of Medicine. Please include your essay under the
abstract section on the submission form.

odontology section: colyer prize


Submission deadline: Sunday 23 July 2017
Meeting date: Monday 11 September 2017
Prize: First prize: 200. Second prize: 100
Open to: Undergraduate and post graduate students and trainees who have gained their qualification within the
last 12 years (as at date of presentation - September)
Candidates are invited to submit a clinical or research abstract of no more than 250 words on original work in
dental science completed in a United Kingdom institution during the preceding five years.
This prize is open to students and trainees. RSM members and non-members are welcome to apply.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to present their poster at the Odontology Section meeting in September.
Poster presenters will receive a certificate, and first and second prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges.

Prize: Best Poster: 150, Best Paper: 150 plus the Dermot Pierse prize of one year's subscription to the British
Journal of Ophthalmology to the overall winner
Open to: Medical students and doctors in training

Opportunity to present research work and case reports to a knowledgeable and critical audience at a Section
meeting. Papers accepted would be considered for publication in the JRSM. Abstracts should be sent of a
maximum 300 words. 1 submission per person only. The judges will then select 8 oral finalists and 24 poster
finalists.
