Preface

Praise God Almighty for all his grace so that this paper can
be arranged to complete and timely.

We do not escape our thanks for our English language teacher

Rumiati Ningsih who has been our mentor in the process of
completion of this paper.

Here we present a paper entitled "explanatory text about

lightning". And we hope this paper hopes to increase knowledge
and experience for the readers, for the future can improve the
shape of the paper or add to make it better again.

Due to lack of knowledge and experience, we believe there are

still many shortcomings in this paper, therefore we welcome
any suggestions and constructive criticism from readers for
the perfection of this paper.

Explanation Text
A. Understanding Explanation Text
Explanation is a text which tells processes relating to
forming of natural, social, scientific and cultural
phenomena.

B. Explanation Text Purpose

To explain the processes involved in the formation or
working of natural or socio-cultural phenomena.

C. Generic Structure Explanation Text

1. General statement
about the general explanation of the phenomena to be
discussed, may be the introduction of such phenomena or
explanations.
2. Squenced of explanation
contains an explanation of the process why the
phenomenon can occur or be created. A squenced of
explanation is an answer to the author's 'why' and
'how' questions when creating an Explanation text. In
the squenced of explanation can consist of more than
one paragraph.
3. Closing
Actually the closing is not listed in the generic
structure of the Explanation text, but most people
assume that the last paragraph of an Explanation text
is closing, when it is part of a squenced of
explantaion that contains the final step described in
the squenced of explanation section.

D. Characteristics of Explanation Text

1. An explanation text usually comes from the author's
question of 'why' and 'how' of an existing phenomenon.
2. Because the appointed is a phenomenon then the material
focus is not on the object or the person, but on events
or events that occur in people or objects.
3. Using the Simple Present tense.

E. Example Explanation Text

The Process Of Occurrence Of Lightning

Lightning is an event of the release of static electricity,

which occurs dramatically and naturally. This incident

3
occurred as a result of the discharge of electric charges of
the object, in this case the cloud. Discharge of static
electricity sometimes happen slowly and calmly. However,
occasional rapid accompanied by sparks or a sound of an
explosion. Spark of light that appears is called by
lightning.

Lightning occurs due to a potential difference in charge

between the cloud and the earth, or cloud to another cloud.
The charge on the cloud occurs because the clouds move
continuously on a regular basis. During the movement of the
cloud will interact with other cloud so that the negative
charge will be gathered on one side. While the slight
positive charge gathered on the reverse side. This usually
occurs before the cloud 'spill' of rain. Cloud itself is
composed of millions of water droplets and ice frozen in the
air. During the interaction process, water droplets collide
with other clouds that are being re-melting (kendensasi)
upwards.

These granules resulting negative charge (electrons) fell.

The electrons are collected at the bottom gives a negative
charge and the cloud that rose that loses electrons,
carrying a positive charge to the top. At this point, the
rising air has the ability to carry a positive charge to the
top of the cloud, other frozen parts will fall to the bottom
or to the cloud to the ground. The combination of impact and
freezing causes the difference in charge were very large,
and resulted in a lightning strike.

Lightning is more common in the rainy season because in

these circumstances the air contains higher water content so
that power down insulation and current flows more easily.
Because there is a cloud of negatively charged and
positively charged clouds, then lightning could also
happenantarawan different charge. Thunderstorms are one of
the most powerful natural phenomena and destroy. Although
the lightning current is only momentary, for about 200
microseconds, but the damage is extraordinary. The effect of
direct attack is evident, ranging from damage to buildings,
fire, until the danger of death to humans.

Quoted from the encyclopedia about lightning, the year 2011.
