NOTE TAKING AND NOTE MAKING

WHY MAKE NOTES?

Helps maintain a high level of concentration by keeping your mind on the text you are reading
Helps find important information quickly
Can review the notes later for examination purposes
Enables you to focus on the main and supporting points of the texts

Marking the text

Highlighting or underlining key words or important points


Writing summary notes, comments or questions in the margin
Using symbols to mark significant sections of text e.g #, ** etc.
Using colour coding
Sticking Post-it markers onto relevant pages

Linear written notes

Important points are organized as lists


Numberings and indentations are used to show main points and subordinate points

Tree diagram

Information presented could either flow vertically or horizontally


For vertical tree diagram, the main title is written at the top with the remaining information
progressing downwards
For horizontal tree diagram the main title will be on the left with the remaining information
progressing to the right

Tables
When some information can be classified into several categories
To create a table you would need to determine categories and headings

Flow Chart

Represents information that comes in a series of process

Time line

A form of notes that usually contains information on events that happen in sequence over a
period of time

Mind map

In a mind map the main idea is placed at the centre while the sub ideas are branched out in all
directions
