ECE 445 Analysis and Design of Power Electronic Circuits Fall 2002

Problem Set 2 Due: September 12, 2002

Problem PS2.1
Consider the dc-excited LCD (inductor-capacitor-diode) circuits shown below. Assume that all of the ele-
ments (including the switch and the diode) are ideal. The switch is closed at t = 0. Prior to closing the
switch, the capacitor voltage and inductor current are both zero, (i.e. vC (0 ) = 0, iL (0 ) = 0).
PSfrag replacements PSfrag replacements
1. Derive and sketch vC (t) and iL (t) for t 0.

2. What
R is the energy supplied by the dc voltage source
R (Ws ), the energy stored in the capacitor (WC ),
and the energy stored in the inductor (WL ) from the time the switch is closed to after the switch has
been closed for a long time (i.e., from t = 0 to t )? What is the relationship between Ws , WC
and WL .

Problem PS2.2 C
Consider the half-wave rectifier circuit shown below. Assume that all of the elements (including the diode)
are ideal. The ac voltage source is given by Vs sin(t). Find and sketch the inductor current iL (t) and the
filter drive voltage vd (t) for t i0.

Problem PS2.3
Consider the half-wave rectifier Ccircuit shown below. Assume that all of the elements (including the diodes)
are ideal and the inductor L is large enough so that its current iL (t) never decays to zero. In other words,
assume that this rectifier is operating in continuous conduction. The ac voltage source is given by V s sin(t).
