APHA!
Student Memberships- $85/year
Individuals must be enrolled in a degree program. Qualifying student should be taking at least 6
credit hours (undergraduate degree) or 3 credit hours (graduate degree) per semester or
comparable credits in a quarter system. Student membership is available for up to six years per
degree. Proof of Status is required annually
Professional Membership- $220/year
Open to health professionals, other career workers in the health field and any persons interested in
public health
Individuals whose annual salary is less than $45,000 USD or the equivalent for foreign nationals
receive a discount on Regular membership (formerly Special Health Worker membership).
Proof of Status is required annually- $105/year

APHA publishes the American Journal of Public Health and The Nation's Health newspaper- At their Annual
Meeting & Exposition, thousands of people share the latest public health research. Together, theyre creating
the healthiest nation in one generation.
The American Public Health Association Press publishes and sells over 70 public health books and texts.
Several of these are THE reference source for their specialty within public health practice, such as Control of
Communicable Diseases Manual (20th edition).
The American Journal of Public Health is the preeminent peer reviewed journal for public health workers and
academics, publishing 12 issues per year. Special emphasis is given to research and practitioners' experiences as
well as a historical context to new and old problems. Voted one of the 100 Most Influential Journals in Biology
& Medicine by the BioMedical & Life Sciences Division of the Special Libraries Association.
For the latest public health news, public health professionals, legislators and decision-makers turn to The
Nations Health, APHA's monthly newspaper. Published 10 times a year, the newspaper is free for all APHA
members and is also available via print or online subscriptions.

The Southern California Public Health Association (SCPHA), an affiliate of the American
Public Health Association, is comprised of individuals and organizations working to promote
individual and community health.
SCPHA provides public health leadership to enhance health promotion, reduce disease and
injury and promote public health policy efforts in Southern California. SCPHA serves the
Southern California counties of Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino,
San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura.

by collaborating, educating and advocating with organizations and individuals who

When applying for SCPHA membership, you are asked to identify your preferred
membership section. Section membership allows you to be privy to special trainings,

education/promotion, health administration, social work and more.

THEIR MISSION
The American Association for Health Education (AAHE) advances the profession
by serving health educators and other professionals who strive to promote the
health of all people. The leaders and members realize the mission through a
comprehensive approach which encourages, supports, and assists health
professionals concerned with health promotion through education and other
systematic strategies. AAHE serves professionals in all settings, such as: health
care, community/public agencies, businesses, schools (Pre-K-12) and institutions
of higher education.

In addition to health educators, there are many members who are students, professors, researchers,
consultants, and more.
Where do SC SOPHE members work?
Members work in a variety of different settings including hospitals, clinics, local, county, and state health
departments, health insurance companies, nonprofits, schools/universities, social assistance and social
advocacy organizations, and private businesses.
Where do SC SOPHE members live?
They welcome members from all over Southern California including counties as far north as San Louis
Obispo and Kern and as far south as San Diego and Imperial. Below is a map showing all counties in our
geographic area.

EXTRA HISTORY
CASHE was founded in the spring of 1979 as an outgrowth of Associated Health Educators
Los Angeles (AHELA), the official LAUSD health teachers group. CASHE was the brainchild of
Gail Rolf from Clay Junior High School and Ken Cross and Ric Loya from Huntington Park High
School.
The first Board of Directors of CASHE included Ric Loya, President Gail Rolf,Vice President
Mike Whittington of Long Beach Wilson, Treasurer Gary Schur from Nobel Junior High, Secretary
and Members-at-Large Dave Ptashne from Kennedy High School, and Ruth Linden from Dorsey
High School.

Mission of the American School Health Association is to transform all schools into places
where every student learns and thrives.
The American School Health Association envisions healthy students who learn and achieve in
safe and healthy environments nurtured by caring adults functioning within coordinated school
and community support systems.
The Association is a multidisciplinary organization of administrators, counselors, dietitians,
nutritionists, health educators, physical educators, psychologists, school health coordinators,
school nurses, school physicians, and social workers.
