Why Health and Nutrition?
Do you think you maintain a primarily healthy diet?

Many Americans cant say yes to this even if some of them look physically
healthy.
The underlying problem of malnutrition in America intrigued us to research
further and we eventually choose this as our focused topic.
Costa Rica Connection

We recently traveled to Costa Rica & learned about sustainable agriculture.

Global Information about
Malnutrition and Obesity
Malnutrition is the cause of nearly half of all deaths of children under 5 (UNICEF)

24.5 million, or 33% of American kids are obese or overweight (American Heart

Association, ChildStats.gov)

One out of every six children in developing countries is underweight (Hunger Statistics)

According to the World Health Organization, 2.8 million people or more die each year

from being overweight or obese (10 Facts on Obesity)

Local Information
Because so much development occurs in the first few
years of life, nutrient deficiencies can have major
short-term implications in young children.

Out of the 50 states in the U.S., Texas ranks as

the 12th fattest state in the country (F as In Fat:
Top 15 Fattest US States)

13% of Texas is diagnosed with diabetes (1.8

million people)

27.4% of children are food insecure in Texas.

Taking Action at Sunset Valley
Elementary
The Impact of Our Take Action
Project

Building the 5 raised beds at Sunset

Valley Elementary was a good
project but we didnt leave a direct
impact on the students.
So a few days later during the school
day, we brought out 4 classes and
had them plant tomatoes and squash
in the gardens we made.
The students will be able to eat the
vegetables later in the year when
they have fully harvested.
