## Solution to Problem 669 | Deflections in Simply Supported Beams

Problem 669
Compute the value of EI midway between the supports of the beam shown in Fig. P-669.

Solution 669

MR2 = 0

R1 = 360 lb

MR1 = 0

R2 = 1080 lb

a 4320
=
6 12

a = 2160 lb ft

## By squared property of parabola:

b 8640
=

6 12

11/14/2017 Solution to Problem 669 | Deflections in Simply Supported Beams | Strength of Materials Review

b = 2160 lb ft

EI tC /A = (AreaAC ) X C

1 3 1 1
EI tC /A = (6)(2160)( ) + (12)(4320)(4) (12)(8640)(3)
3 2 2 3

3
EI tC /A = 6480 lb ft

EI tB/A = (AreaAB ) X B

1 1 3
EI tB/A = (6a)(2) (6b)( )
2 3 2

EI tB/A = 6a 3b

## EI tB/A = 6(2160) 3(2160)

3
EI tB/A = 6480 lb ft

With the values of EI tC/A and EI tB/A, it is obvious that the elastic curve is above
point B. The deflection at B (up or down) can also be determined by comparing the
values of tB/A and yB2.

## By ratio and proportion:

y B2 tC /A
=
6 12

1
y B2 = tC /A
2

1
EI y B2 = EI tC /A
2

1
EI y B2 = (6480)
2

3
EI y B2 = 3240 lb ft

Since tB/A is greater than yB2, the elastic curve is above point B as concluded previously.

Therefore,
EI B = EI tB/A EI y B2

EI B = 6480 3240

3
EI B = 3240 lb ft

You can also find the value EI B by finding tA/C, tB/C, and yB1. I encourage you to do it yourself.
