Solve two of the following questions
Assignment 1
a) Assume that the two wheels in Fig. 1(a) have pure rolling contact at A. Draw the
velocity polygon for the relative motion of point B with respect to point A. What
is the relative velocity vBA?
b) The two points A and B in Fig. 1(b) below are located along the radius of the
wheel (horizontal) at a distance of 300 mm. At the given position, the points
have velocities of 80 m/s and 140 m/s respectively. Find the diameter of the
wheel and determine the its angular speed. Draw the velocity polygon of the
motion of the points (A and B) and determine the relative velocities vAB and vBA.

Assignment 2
The figure given below (Fig. 2) is a model of a stone crasher mechanism where link 2
makes a rotational motion with constant angular speed ( w2 = 12 s -1 ), while link 3
makes a forward and backward motion. The length of the coupling bar (link BD) is 85
mm.
i) For the position shown
a) Determine the number of ICVs and locate them on drawing of the mechanism.
b) Calculate the speed of point C that is the midpoint of the coupling bar BD
using graphical method.
ii) Determine the speed of point D on link 3 and the angular speed of the coupling
bar BD when the position angle q = 0.

Assignment 3
An oil pumping rig is shown in the figure below. The flexible pump rod D is fastened
to the sector at E and is always vertical as it enters the fitting below D. The link AB
causes the beam BCE to oscillate as the cranked weight OA revolves. If OA has a
constant CW speed of 1 rev every 3 s, assume that the beam and the crank OA are
both in the horizontal position as shown, and
a) Determine the number of ICVs and locate them on the drawing of the
mechanism
b) Use the ICV method or graphical method (by drawing velocity polygon) and
estimate the angular velocity of arm AB and the beam BCE at the given
position.
c) Use graphical method (by drawing the acceleration polygon) and determine
the acceleration of the pump rod D.
NB: To solve question a) and b), disregard the flexible pump rod ED from the
mechanism.
