Competence Sustained Teaching

Introduction -Warmer Describe the setting, the grades you taught and explain the purpose of this
placement:
Each semester we have to choose a school to practice as teachers in, and for this
semester I choose Al Darari kindergarten. Al Darari kindergarten is located in Al
Darari area, it has 259 students, 12 teachers for each class and 12 classes 6 kg1
and 6 kg2, each class have 20-25 maximum students. The school has 3 English
teachers each teacher teaches 2 classes. I taught kg 2 students, the time I came to
school, my class didnt have an English teacher.
Professionalism How did you demonstrate professional behavior as a trainee teacher in the
school? Explain how you maintained your professional status not only in
your own classroom but also across the school.
During teaching practice in Al Darari kindergarten, the first day I made
sure to greet the principal, all the teachers and some of the staff there. I
introduced myself to the teachers especially my MST and I informed her
about the purpose of me being at the school attending her class as a
trainee teacher, I asked my MST about the syllabus of the class, I read
through it to make sure that I'm ready for whats going to happen next
and on the next day/ weeks. Going through the syllabus helped me a lot
when my MST was busy she asked me sometimes to teach her part. I
gave assistance to my MST, doing some activities to the students,
decorating the classroom, hanging up things for her on the walls, and
focusing on some students who needed more help developing in so me
areas. Texting my MST when Im going to be late and giving a valid
reason due to my lateness. Participating in the schools workshops and
helping other teachers, doing the government's students' assessments of
their English level, Aisha, Mahra and I did three classes together. Also
keeping an eye on the students during playground time when my MST is
having her break time.
Explain how conducting and receiving one formal peer observations helped
you to develop professionally?
When I did the peer observation for my colleague, I found out that I can catch the
wrong things she did, the strategies she went through and the things she missed,
how did my colleague reflect on herself after teaching, what went right and what
went wrong & identifying the strengths of the lesson given, also sharing ideas
how the lesson can be improved. Peer observation helped me learn from my
colleague.

Explain how you collaborated with other staff in activities that involve the
community during this placement.
During teaching practice, we helped the English teachers on the The Jungle
Party workshop, we organized the place with them, and on the day of the
workshop my colleague Mahra and I did the face painting to students in kg2 and
Aisha did the animals wood print with Jamila. We also involved in the traffic
safety workshop, we helped during the flag day there was an event and some
competitions for students, we did some activities related to the flag day.
Planning for Learning (including What difficulties did you face in planning seven differentiated lesson plans
Knowledge and Understanding of to ensure that they included a range of activity types for the whole class,
Content) groups, and individuals
I faced many difficulties during teaching practice, the most difficult one was
related to the English class, my class didnt have an English teacher due to
personal reasons, but they said she will return after one month. Before teaching
my first English lesson I observed an English teacher teaching the lowercase a,
so my first lesson was nearly the same as her, while teaching it was difficult to
teach English for the first time for a class that didnt have an English teacher, how
much I used simple English it was hard to explain things in a simpler way, so the
Arabic teacher and I decided that I will teach in English and if the students
couldnt understand she will explain it in Arabic. Another thing that confused me
and was a little difficult is that when I planned a science lesson about the reptiles,
Im used to practicing what I will say during the lesson, so I was practicing on the
next day and reviewing the lesson by myself & before starting the lesson my MST
changed the plan and gave me things to say and teach that got my planned
changed so I got confused, at the end I didnt like the science lesson I taught
because it was bad I was confused and the students got confused more. Planning
activities were easy since its not my first time to plan differentiated activities,
but what I didnt like is that I could do more fun activities and crafts for the
students, but due to the short time I couldnt do it so I ended up with simple
activities and worksheets.
Explain how you assessed the learning objectives/outcomes you set the
students.
I did assess students on three parts, on the circle time I would ask questions about
last day lesson to ensure that they understand the lesson, during the activities I
would set with each group and while helping them with the activities I would ask
questions and discuss with them, lastly I would assess the students during the
closing, I will review the lesson followed by related questions.
Implementing and Managing Learning Explain what you did to make sure that youre modeling / demonstration of
(including behavior management, the tasks you set your students was clear and effective.
language, and delivery) To make sure that Im modeling/demonstrating the tasks to the students in clear
and effective way, I would have the tasks shown on the television using Microsoft
words and sometimes PowerPoint to make sure that all the students are involved
and are able to see the tasks, then I would explain each task with one example
that is solved and while showing them that I would explain the steps they have to
go through. When doing the activities at the centers I would go to each group and
explain it again if they didnt know what to do.

What strategies did you apply to maintain student engagement and how
effective were they in ensuring that tasks were completed effectively?
I maintained the students by giving different types of activities, asking questions,
simple and short lesson, fun ways to learn the phonics and playing a game when
possible. Most of the students wanted to be involved by telling me what they
know, they were happy to be able to understand English after going through
different types of lessons, by the end of each lesson I taught mostly the whole
class would show me things they wrote in English, some of them would write the
letters they know, other would try writing from a to z and others would try to
write their name in English.

Provide examples of how you developed student independence and

responsibility in your classes.
Students had developed a sense of independence and responsibility, by giving
them the freedom to choose what to do for example, once I gave them opportunity
to choose the activity they want to do, some students wanted to do all the activities
given so I let them do that, also while doing some activities sometimes the activity
itself does not include right or wrong answer, like drawing, coloring, choosing,
this or that, etc. so whatever they do during that kind of activities its never wrong.
If students drew something I would ask them to explain for me what they did and
girls especially would tell me stories about their drawing. Some students would
suggest me that they want to play a game so I would choose a known game that
they all know and connect the game to the lesson.
Monitoring, Assessment, and What strategies did you use to monitor student progress across a range of
Evaluation connected teaching sessions including class, group, pair, and individual work
To monitor students across a range of connected teaching sessions including
class, group, pair, and individual work, I photographed the students during
learning centers I take pictures of them working on the tasks giving, sometimes I
would videotape them. Also, I have some pictures of students working on the
government English quiz, it gave students variety of questions like, phonics,
shapes, colors, numbers, describing things in English and questions like whats
your name and how are you today?

Provide examples of and describe the formative assessment instruments such

as anecdotal notes, checklists, Traffic Lights, photos, children self-
assessment, Learning Journey, etc.. you used to evaluate student
performance in a variety of activity types
I evaluated the students performance, I would let them do the thing I asked them
to do by themselves and observe them how well did they do, I would reflect on
that by discussing with my MST her point of view and my point of view. I would
take pictures as evidence of students work because I think its not allowed to take
their work with me. After each lesson and after reflecting on students
performance I would ensure to develop from what needed to improve and from
what was missing.
Reflection on Practice Which teaching strategies did you find were particularly effective and
explained why with reference to educational theory and/or experience?
I used the zone of proximal development strategy, students would use a help from
MKO more knowledgeable other which can be another student, older person or
the teacher. The strategy was effective because once I know what area students
need to be developed in more, I would focus more on that main area, also if I gave
a lesson that includes things they know I would give them more things than I was
planning too. It gives the child an opportunity to have a positive feedback on what
they did achieve so far. It was useful because it minimized the level of frustration
of the learner. I used scaffolding since it can put the students in a position to
achieve success in an activity that they would previously not have been able to do
alone. In 1930 Lev Vygotsky coined the term zone of proximal development.
(Vygotsky, 1930)

Identify and critically evaluate the influence of a range of stakeholders at

your school e.g. Ministry of Education, Principal, parents, etc.
The main influence on the curriculum is the MOE when I asked my MST about
the curriculum at first, she told me that they are not sure of the right curriculum
yet because the MOE keep changing it and the teachers would keep changing their
lessons plan. Once the curriculum is set up it will go through the principle first
then through other responsible teachers to make sure that it is suitable for the
students first then the teachers, because students learning is very important.
Lastly, each classs teacher would inform parents of the necessary things that
could and would happen.

Explain how closely you were able to apply key principles from your own
teaching philosophy as a student teacher in this school?
I wanted to make sure that every single student is involved on my lesson, so I
would let students take turns to answer, even if they dont know the answer I
would encourage and help them. Make sure to treat the students equally, respect
students thoughts and ideas of the lesson, and encourage learning and that
learning is fun, I ensure to give each student feedback on what they said or did.
Respect students way of learning. Always ensure that I am a good model for the
students and that they will learn good things from being hopefully.

What would you say have been your particular strengths during this TP?
Which areas for development have you identified for next semester - justify
this?

My strengths were that I was more confident during this teaching practice,
cooperating with teachers and other staff, being in touch with teachers outside the
school, discussing my lessons plans with my MST, helping other teachers in a
professional way. As I said before I wanted my tasks to be more fun and some
kind of crafts activities where I can encourage students creativity.
