EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS REPORT

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

MICA CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

The DCPL-MICA Curatorial Fellowship will pair four librarians with a graduate from the
Maryland Institute College of Arts (MICA) Curatorial Practice MFA program for a year-long
exploration of the relationship between librarian practice and curatorial practice. The goal of
the MICA program is to make creative connections with our communities, which builds on the
work DCPL does through "Know Your Neighborhood" and other cultural programming. This
years fellowship curriculum will be led by MICA Curatorial Practice MFA alumnus Nick Petr and
will be themed around the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s Poor Peoples
Campaign. Nick is a co-founder of Oak Hill Center for Education and Culture in East Baltimore.
His work explores the use of arts and cultural materials to develop curriculum and engage
audiences in educational practices related to organizing social movements. Over the course of
the year, our MICA Fellow-Librarians will identify areas of interest and be guided through the
process of curating a public cultural event(s) or exhibition, through a combination of lectures,
discussions, and classwork. The DCPL-MICA Curatorial Fellowship builds on the work of a 2015
pilot project and is generously sponsored in part by the Cafritz Foundation.

MLK JR. MEMORIAL LIBRARY PUBLIC ART PRESENTATION

Semifinalists for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Librarys ceiling treatment will present
their ideas at a public meeting on Saturday, December 2 at 9:30am. This is the first of three
permanent public art pieces that will go in the modernized Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
Library. The goals for the ceiling treatment are to represent D.C.s landscape and/or
streetscape; create a thematic connection between the third floor Grand Reading Room and
the Special Collections area on the fourth floor; complement the architect's vision for a light-
filled, quiet, relaxing space for reading and solitary study that harmonizes with Mies van
der Rohes modernist design; distinguish the Grand Reading Room with an iconic visual feature,
with the potential to increase a sense of community connection to the Library and its resources;
and honor Dr. Kings legacy and love of books by enhancing spaces for lifelong learning that are
welcoming and accessible to all.

#DC1968
1968 was a momentous year in D.C. and our nation - many know that it was the year that MLK
and RFK were tragically assassinated, but less are familiar with events such as the Poor People's
Campaign, which brought activists from all over the nation to D.C. to mobilize on behalf of the
oppressed. In D.C., while most residents know about the riots that occurred that year, many are
not aware that it was the groundbreaking of our own MLK Library, the founding of the Duke
Ellington School for the Arts and the Federal City College, now known as UDC. As the 50th
anniversary of that year approaches, the DC Public Library is planning a variety of programs and
events to mark the experiences that shaped 1968 for D.C. and for the nation. We expect this to
be a mixture of commemorating the past and exploring where things stand at present, through
rich, innovative, engaging programs throughout the library campus. We will share more
information on these programs and they develop.
