CALENDAR OF EVENTS
LOVEDCPLGIVE CAMPAIGN
OnNovember 28 (GivingTuesday) the DC Public Library Foundation will launch its year-end
giving campaign, LoveDCPLGive, reminding District residents why they should use, love and
support their public library with an end-of-year donation. The month-long campaign includes a
donor mailing initiative, social media campaign and community outreach at neighborhood
libraries. The campaign will share personal stories from librarians, patrons and community
partners detailing the Library's impact on job seekers, children, artists and so many others in
our city. The campaign will also shine a spotlight on some of our critical programs that are not
well-known to the public. These stories, programs and photos will be shared via Twitter,
Instagram and Facebook. Be sure to follow @dcpl_literati on Twitter and Instagram.
Contributions to DC Public Library can be made atdcplfoundation.org, as well as through the
DC One Fund (#9535) and the Combined Federal Campaign (#14895).

#DC1968
1968 was a momentous year in D.C. and our nation - many know that it was the year that MLK
and RFK were tragically assassinated, but less are familiar with events such as the Poor People's
Campaign, which brought activists from all over the nation to D.C. to mobilize on behalf of the
oppressed. In D.C., while most residents know about the riots that occurred that year, many are
not aware that it was the groundbreaking of our own MLK Library, the founding of the Duke
Ellington School for the Arts and the Federal City College, now known as UDC. As the 50th
anniversary of that year approaches, the DC Public Library is planning a variety of programs and
events to mark the experiences that shaped 1968 for D.C. and for the nation. We expect this to
be a mixture of commemorating the past and exploring where things stand at present, through
rich, innovative, engaging programs throughout the library campus. We will share more
information on these programs and they develop.
THROUGHOUT 2018
MLK WEEK
Each year, DCPL celebrates the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during
MLK Week. Libraries across the system will host film screenings, author talks, book clubs,
poetry slams and open mic nights, arts & crafts and childrens programs that explore the civil
rights movement and celebrate Dr. Kings vision and accomplishments.
