Pre-Observation Form

Directions: This form is to be completed prior to every lesson that will be observed by the mentor
teacher or university supervisor. It is to be submitted no later than 3 business days prior to the actual
observation along with your lesson plans.

Name: Casey Bohnenblusch Date: November 9, 2017

1. What is the topic of your lesson?

- I will be introducing the concept of needs and wants. My lesson will help
students to identify a need and a want and also differentiate between the two. I
will also be incorporating arts by having students act out needs and wants using
a pantomime.

2. Why are you teaching this lesson? What is your rationale for teaching it?
- I am teaching this lesson to introduce students to the topic of needs and wants.
Students have just finished their citizenship unit and are moving into the concept
of needs and wants. My goal is to help students Identify needs and wants and
understand the difference between them.

3. What is your Teaching Behavior Focus? Why did you choose this?
- My teaching behavior focus is on student practice rather than direct instruction.
This lesson has students interacting and communicating with each other in order
to gain a deeper understanding of the material. I also want them to get creative
and think critically when putting their newly learned information into a pantomime.

4. Why did you design your instruction in this lesson the way that you did? Why did
you choose this way of teaching the lesson (e.g., Was the idea from a methods
course? From your mentor teacher? Another source?)
- I used the NCSU lesson format and included specific activities to meet the
requirements of my assignments. The delivery of the lesson is influenced by my
observation of my mentor teacher and that guides the flow of activities.

5. As you are thinking through this lesson, what do you believe will be the most
challenging part of this lesson for you when you teach it? Why?
- I think getting the students to understand the concept enough to create a
pantomime or still frame will be a little difficult for these wiggly kindergarteners
but I think they will enjoy it. I think behavior management is always a challenge
given the big personalities in the room.
6. How will you know if your learning outcomes for the students are met
successfully?
- Throughout the whole group portion of the lesson I will be monitoring question
and answer and determining what concepts students grasp and what areas need
further explanation. The anchor chart we create together will give me insight into
what students are getting from the activities and finally the still frame will allow
me to see individual understanding.

7. How will your classroom management support the learning outcomes?

- I will be using the classroom management techniques used by my mentor
teacher. If students are participating and engaged the whole class has the
opportunity to fill their bucket with warm fuzzies. If individual students are
working hard during the independent work they will have the chance to clip up.
I think focusing on the positives and encouraging hard work and high
expectations will help the lesson run smoothly. I think giving students the
opportunity to be creative and step out of the daily routines will give way for
positive learning behaviors and in turn classroom management.

8. List 1-3 areas, which you would like for your observer to pay particular attention.
Why do you want your observer to focus on these areas?
- I would like to work on my classroom management throughout the lesson so it
would be helpful to get feedback on my ability to keep students engaged and
learning.
- I am interested to see how well the arts portion of the lesson fits into the
activities planned. I would like input on how well the arts was integrated given
the abundance of art at Brooks.

9. Is there anything else you would like your observer to know before the
observation?
