11. A hollow C.I. column whose outside diameter is 200mm has a thickness of 20mm. It is 4.5m
long and is fixed at both ends. Calculate the safe load by Rankine's formula using a factor of
safety of 4. Calculate the slenderness ratio and the ratio of Euler's and Rankine's critical loads.
Take fc = 550 N/mm2, a = 1/1600 in Rankines formula & E = 9.4 x 104 N/mm2. For what length
of the column of this cross section, will the Euler's formula cease to apply

12. The cross section of a column is a hollow rectangular section with its external dimensions 200
mm x 150 mm. The internal dimensions are 150 mm x 100 mm. The column is 5 m long and
fixed at both the ends. If E = 120 GPa, calculate the critical load using Euler's formula. Compare
the above load with the value obtained from Rankine's formula. The permissible compressive
stress is 500 N/mm2. The Rankine's constant is 1/6000. (14 Marks)

E = 12GPa and the allowable stress being limited to 12 MPa, determine the size of the column to

15. There are two columns, one is a solid column 150mm in dia. and the other is a hollow column of
same cross-sectional area with a wall thickness of 25mm. Both columns have same length & end
conditions. Determine ratio of Eulers buckling load carried by hollow column & solid column.
