I:Your brother’s influence on you was quite large, wasn’t it?

A:It was... Although he’s 6 years older than me, I was interested in what he and his
friends were doing. He played with remote controlled toys and plastic models. We
probably wanted to do the same things. I bought him a radio controlled toy for a
New Year’s gift and my relatives were raising pearls and gave me pocket money for
helping with the “shell cleaning” and I was also a paper boy when I was in my third
year of middle school.

I:Was that to buy the things you wanted?

A:Even though I was getting $30 a month, isn’t that never enough? My stomach was
empty and I wanted a guitar……

I:When you wanted to play guitar, what did your brother say?

A:At first, he let me play in his room, but he was also half-hearted about it and that
became annoying. So he handed me his out-of-tune classical guitar and said “I’ll
lend this to you, so go back to your room.” (laugh)

A:Yes. I investigated by myself and played while looking at chord sheet music. After
that, my brother let me have his electric guitar. But that guitar was broken and,
well, I had no choice but to buy one for myself.

I:Why did your brother let you have a broken guitar?

A:Isn’t it because he didn’t need it anymore?

I:Ahaha!

A:(laugh) That guitar of my brother’s I wanted is still in my house and, if you talked
about guitars, I thought of that guitar. I had wanted it forever. It’s been put in my
room now for some reason.

I:It’s a very special guitar to you.

I:When did you start to surf?

A:I started because I got a car when I was 18. I drove until the point where you
could surf the waves. And my girlfriend at the time’s brother also surfed. So I
borrowed his board and went out alone and thought “this is interesting.” Being able
to make new friends there was also fun and I went there every day. I rode the
waves during the day and worked at a pub at night. That was my life.

I:So working and surfing was your youth?
