Subject or Topic: Plant Parts

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

Science and technology and Engineering education
- Life Cycles 3.1.K.A3.
-Observe, compare, and describe stages of life cycles for plants and/or animals.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
The 2nd grade students will be able to identify and describe the basic parts of a plant.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1.Thumbs up or down 1.# of thumbs up
2. Exit Ticket/ labeling each part individually 2. 6 answers correctly
on the worksheet
.
Assessment Scale:
2) part of a plant worksheet
6 Proficient
5-3Basic
< 2 Below Basic

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
- They will distinguish each part of a plant
- They will construct a plant using materials given.

Key Vocabulary:
- roots- the usual portion of a plant that draws minerals and water from soil.
- stem-the main ascending axis of a plant, a stalk or a trunk.
- flower- the reproductive structure of some seed bearing plants.
- leaf- usually green flat structures attached and functioning as principal organs of
photosynthesis
Content/Facts:
- parts of a Plant (see vocab above)
- basic needs for a plant
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
As the students are walking in you will be drawing a plant making sure to include all
parts of the flower; Root, a stem a flower and leaves
You will then pass out petals and a marker to each student
Then you will ask your students what you have drawn, once someone says plant you
can ask if anyone knows the different parts of a plant and allow the students to write
them on their petal , if students are struggling because they don't know the parts
encourage them to write anything they know about a plant.
once students are done writing their suggestions have the student walk up to the board
and place their petal on the flower
once the students are seated discuss the answers they have come up with if the students
have the correct parts of a plant label them with the plant that is on the board.

Development/Teaching Approaches
- continuing with the plant on the board discuss the parts of a plant with the students .
some great potential question can be : What do roots do? How do roots help keep a
plant alive? WHat purpose do leaves serve?
- as the questions come up one by one explain each function of each plant?
- explain that roots hold plants into the soil. they take water and minerals to help the
plant stay alive.
- tell the class that the stem is the part that carries water from the roots to the other parts
of the plant
- define the flower as what helps the plant reproduce, making seeds that will grow into
new plants
- explain that leaves take in the air and light that a plant needs to live.
- using this as a jump off point for a class discussion, review your students what plant
need to survive, remind them that plants need sun, water, soil and air to live.
- once you have the class discussion split the students into small groups and pass out the
following supplies, coffee ground, fake flowers, green construction paper.
- explain to your students that they will be creating a plant that has roots, a stem, leaves,
and a flower.
- once they have created their flower using the materials given instruct your students to
label each part of their plant using the sticky notes given.
- once they have labeled each part of their plant encourage the students to get a bit more
creative and have them invent a names for their plant, they can also create the uses of
their plant
- once they have completed their plant have them word on the Parts of a plant worksheet
independently

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
- once the students have completed creating their plant and finished working on their
worksheet.
- the students will then present their flower and get graded though their performance (
see rubric attached for grading)
- being sure that they include their plant name and its function as well as what they used
to identify each part plant and what they're used for.
-
- now that we have discussed the different parts of a plant , i want you to go home and
look at your dinner plate and see plant part you are eating. tomorrow we will discuss
the different part of the plant we eat and what is healthy for us.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
- ADHD- give the student a word bank when working on creating their plant to have the
correct parts of the plant labeled.

Materials/Resources:
- pencils
- erasers
- ground coffee
- paper flowers
- construction paper petals
- straws
- green construction paper
- white construction paper
- glue
- scissors
- parts of a plant worksheet ( one per student)
- colored pencils
- sticky notes.

Personal Reflection Questions

We want to make sure they have enough time to comprehend the lesson.
Will we have enough time?
did the students understand the key terms and where able to label the plant
correctly?
Additional reflection/thoughts
