Pitch:
Mad Manhattan Math is an engaging, fast paced game for elementary students

working on their division and multiplication fast facts! This game creates a real

world experience for students, putting them behind the wheel of a New York City

cab. It is essential for students working on their multiplication and division fluency

2

to understand that both their speed and accuracy are important in becoming fluent

mathematicians. No one understands speed and accuracy like a New York City cab

driver!

Creates a Real World Experience! The game places the player in the seat of a cab

driver and crosses the avenues of New York City. It catches the attention of the child

who grew up in a city, those who have always wanted to visit, and those who have

ever rode in a cab! Almost every city in the world has cab drivers and therefore

would create a connection to a vast amount of gamers.

Tracks specific data! This game tracks data to inform instruction, such as the

number of questions/per minute that a student has answered and also the accuracy

in which they answered these questions. The player is expected to answer a

question correctly every 3-4 seconds in order to demonstrate fluency. Because

students travel across avenues that are aligned with multiples, players and

instructors can observe which Avenue(s) gave students the most difficulty.

Players Self Assess! The game provides players with a list of incorrectly answered

questions and that helps players reflect on errors and self assess. Players can use

this information to practice problems that gave them difficulty. They also can

monitor their own growth with specific data!

Offers a Potential for Future Opportunities! Mad Manhattan Math has the

potential to grow into a series of geographically placed math games. While this

mathematics skill lends itself to New York City other series based in other areas of

the country or the world. These connections would encourage players to "travel the

3

world" of mathematics.

Storyline Elements:

Character(s) Background (Setting)
Mad Manhattan Math takes place in two
Players role-play; entering the different areas of New York City: Midtown
world of a New York City cab and Downtown. Players who choose to play
driver. In their new role, they can in Midtown will answer a series of
choose to pick up one of the multiplication fast fact questions as they
following passengers depending drive passengers across avenues and to their
on where they want to drive destinations. In Midtown, drivers will travel
(what multiple they would like to to Bryant Park, Times Square, and the
practice.) Highline. Players who choose to play
Downtown will answer a series of division
Midtown Downtown fast fact questions as they drive passengers
Multiplication Division across avenues and to their destinations.
Maggie Daesha Downtown,
drivers will travel
to Washington
Square Park, the
Rubin Museum of
Art, and the

Marcella Dan Highline.

Midtown
Multiplication
- Maggie is traveling to Bryant Park on
40thand 5th Ave.
- Marcella is traveling to Times Square
Mike David on 42nd and 7th Ave.
- Mike is traveling to the Highline on
34thand 10th Ave.
Downtown Division
- Daesha is traveling to Washington
Square Park (5th Ave) via 3rd and 4th

Street.
- Dan is traveling to Rubin Museum of
Art on 17th St and 7th Ave.
- David is traveling to the Highline on
17th St and 10th Ave.

Storyline: Mad Manhattan Math is a roleplaying game in which players step into
the role of a New York City cab driver. Players earn money, like taxi drivers as they

4

cross Avenues. The further the ride, the more money they make. To make money,
students must answer multiplication or division questions to swerve into available lanes
quickly. At the end of the game the player can turn their cash in for pizza, coffee, I love
NY stickers, or they can customize their cab. These prizes can unlock bonus streets like
Lexington Avenue to play on! These Players can also play against their friends and race!

Important Scenes

Pick a Location Page- On this page, students
choose the area in which they would like to
drive, but more importantly choose the skill
they would like to practice (multiplication
or division) based on where they choose to
drive.

Pick a Passenger Page- On this page, students choose a passenger. Passengers
going a further distance will require them to work with multiples that are
higher and more challenging. However, they will also be able to earn more
money!

5

Avenue Completion An Avenue is considered a round in this game. Players
have 1 minute to complete the Avenue. If they do not answer 15 questions
correctly in this time, they have not demonstrated fluency of the multiple
provided. If 30 questions are answered before the end of the minute the
avenue is complete. When this happens a page with an arrow is displayed
and the player finds out their speed and accuracy before continuing on to the
next avenue and multiple. If the player does not meet the 15-question goal,
they will see a Crash Page if they answered too many questions incorrectly
or a Too Slow if they answered too few questions in a minute.

General Rules:
Players use the mouse to select Start in order to begin the game. The player
chooses a location and skill by clicking on the appropriate map image. In order to
practice multiplication skills, players select Midtown Multiplication and in order to
practice division skills, players select Downtown Division. Once the player has
selected their location, there are three characters that plays can drive to a specific
destination that vary in difficulty. The higher the Avenue number, the longer the
game and difficulty. These are labeled with Easiest Route, Medium Route, and
Hardest Route. During the players drive, they must type in the product or quotient
of the given problem in the answer box. To submit the answer players must press
the Enter button on their keyboard. Once the player types the correct answer, the
cab will swerve into the available lane. Players need to answer questions quickly.
When the taxi travels across each Avenue, the player will have one minute to answer
at least 15 questions. If the player does not answer at least 15 questions, they will
see a Too Slow pop up and have to return to the beginning of that Avenue. Players
need to answer questions accurately. If the player falls below 75% accuracy to
complete questions, they will see a CRASH! pop up which will require them to
return to the beginning of that Avenue. Each level uses a different multiple. (For
example, 2nd Avenue will have: 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, 2x6, 2x7, 2x8, 2x9, 2x10)
Questions will be asked out of order and will repeat. For each correctly answered
question, the player earns $0.10. For each avenue completed, the player earns the
dollar amount equal to the Avenue number (For example: $6.00 for the completion
of 6th Avenue). Students can use this money to earn prizes, decorate their cab, and
unlock levels in the auto-body shop.

6

Fictional Elements
While the locations in New York City are real, the player is stepping into the role of a
taxi driver in New York City. The concepts in this game are fictionalized to fit the
Multiplication and Division Fluency concepts. The game emphasizes the two skills of
Fluency: Speed and Accuracy and compares them to the job of a taxi driver. While
drivers use these skills, they do not have measurements of their accuracy in
swerving. However, if a swerve is inaccurate, it could lead to a crash. The time that it
would take to get across Avenues is exaggerated, as one could not travel across New
York City midtown in 10 minutes (to get to 10th Ave). Between 3rd and 5th are three
Avenues (Park, Madison, Lexington). For the purpose of the game, 4th Avenue will
run between 3rd and 5th. This way, 4th Avenue will contain multiples of 4.

Captology
Students can make real world connections during this game.
Students are motivated to answer multiplication and division questions
accurately and quickly in order to travel across the Avenues successfully.
Students can visit the auto-body shop to cash in their earnings for
stickers/decals for their cab.
Students can purchase pizza, coffee, playbills, or photographs from the auto-
body shop. These items unlock new avenues for games that mix multiples.
Students earn $0.10 additional earnings when they surpass the 15-question
goal for each avenue.
Students view their scores on a leaderboard.

Accomplishing Objectives
Players will use their fast fact skills of multiplication and division up to 100 to
answer the questions correctly. Players will earn $0.10 per question answered
correctly toward their taxi fare. If students surpass 20 questions answered correctly
a minute, they will earn $0.20 per question. For each Avenue a player crosses over,
they earn $1.00 toward their taxi fare and therefore their earnings. Players will
answer questions correctly in order to swerve into open lanes and make it to their
destination as quickly as possible. The players goal is to move quickly and
accurately. Students need to maintain over 75% accuracy or their cab will crash.
Players who do not answer over 15 questions within the minute they are provided
to cross the Avenue will have moved too slowly and their passenger will find a
different cab.
