Plans For Maryland School
By Centene Met By Delays

due to landscape issues

Centene Corporations plans to reno-
vate and expand the former Maryland
School in Clayton has experienced a
delay, as the plan commission/architec-
tural review board tabled a vote on sev-
eral items at its Nov. 6 meeting.
Clayton Alderman Joanne Boulton, a
plan commission member, suggested
tabling discussion of the items saying
the project does not meet minimum
standards in the landscapes ability to
absorb rainfall.
She said that while she supports
plans to have green sections on the
buildings roof, she did not know if that
would help in meeting requirements for
rain runoff. She said tabling the issue
allows Centene to bring its plan into
conformity.
Bob Clark, chairman and CEO of
Clayco, construction manager for
Centenes nearby main headquarters
expansion, said that continued delays
could have a negative impact on the
project. Centenes contract with the
Clayton School District to buy the prop-
erty recently expired. Clark said it
would be impractical to continue
extending the contract.
Centene intends to renovate the
school and expand it by just over 29,000
square feet, bringing it to approximately

Clark said Centene has made an
effort to listen to concerns and has
amended its plans to have as little
impact on the property and surrounding
area as possible.
Several members of the board
requested that, when the Centene team
brings the project back before alder-
men, that the team include 3D images to
help the board and residents under-
stand what is being proposed. 4
Eli Hoisington, an architect with
HOK, said a 3D image of the project
would be put together, though he said he
was led to believe from a peivious meet-
ing that 3d modeling was not required.
