Once the students have made it to the Gizmo, they each will launch their own
plant simulation.
Each student will conduct their own experiment, therefore, each student
needs to pick 1 thing to make different for the 3 plants, and develop a
hypothesis.
The students will need to either change the amount of lighting, the amount
of water, the amount of fertilizer, or the amount of compost. After selecting
ONE, they will then give the 3 plants the same amount of everything else.
These things will be the constants.
After choosing what to change, and developing a hypothesis using an if and
then statement i.e. If the plant has 3 lights on then it will grow the most. In
this case, you would leave one plant with three lights, one plant with 2 lights,
and the last plant with 1 or no light.
The student will then push the play button, starting the simulation. He or she
will be able to see the growth of the plants over 50 days. On the same
simulation, it also graphs and gives information about the data obtained. The
student should observe while the plant is growing, and then read over the
data on the next page.
After reading over the data and watching the simulation, the student will go
back to his or her blackboard page. He or she will then open up the chat

room for his or her class. The students will make a new chat box, and type in
his or her original hypothesis statement, making sure it is an IF THEN
statement. The student will also include what they observed from the plant
growing and what they changed, kept the same, as well as if they were
correct in their hypothesis. They will also include a conclusion statement
about what they observed.
As I am also apart of this, I will respond to each chat about each students
simulation. I may ask additional questions, or do the experiment myself.
The students will also be able to see what their classmates chose to do and
what other hypotheses there were by reading the other chats.
