INTRODUCTION
In this report, I will be talking about the internet of things. I will answer 5 significant questions about
IoT.

The internet of things is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items
embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators and network connectivity which enables
these objects to connect and exchange data. Each device is uniquely identifiable through its
embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within existing internet infrastructure.

IoT allows objects to be senses or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure.

IoT is becoming more and more important. It is already used nowadays is different sectors, and
especially the IoT at home is growing significantly. Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of about
30 billion objects by 2020.

5 QUESTIONS
WHAT EFFECT WILL THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) HAVE ON OUR DAILY LIVES?
IOT has a lot of effects on our daily life. The most known one is the effect on our houses. Our house
becomes an intelligent house, programmed to save energy and make your life more convenient.
Heating systems will be synced with external temperature sensors, which will be synced with cost
evaluations; lighting will react as we enter a room, as might our coffee makers. IOT in our houses will
make life much easier.

IOT will also have a huge effect on the waste management. Since heating, lightning and air-
conditioning will be connected with you, it will only work in you are present. This will save a lot of
energy waste and money.

Also traffic and transportation will be effected by the internet of things. Our cars will open if the
sensor inside senses that we are approaching and will open itself. Intelligent traffic detection will
direct us via the shortest and fasted way to our destination, keeping into account the traffic and
works on the road.

Even doing groceries will become way easier and less time consuming. Smart refrigerators will sense
when you are running low on products such as eggs or milk and will automatically compose your
grocery list.

There are many more ways how the internet of things can make your daily life much easier, but it is
sure that it will.

WILL IT IMPACT SUSTAINABILITY?

The internet of things will definitely impact the sustainability in a positive way. Offices and houses
will be equipped with smart sensors that automatically shut of heating and lightning when nobody is
in the room and smart meters help to save electricity. These systems allow for more efficient and
energy use, saving money and power.

Another field where IOT can reduce the waste of power and energy an so be sustainable is the real-
time inventory management. Workers can be notified as soon as a machine is in need of repair, so
that any breakdowns in the supply chain can be attended to immediately. Instead of solving
problems and wasting power and manpower, problems can be prevented.

(Morris, 2017)

WHAT DO YOU REGARD AS THE MOST INTERESTING USE OF THE INTERNET OF THINGS?
I personally think that for me, the most interesting use of the internet of things is IoT at home.
Devices who keep track of your groceries can save you a lot of time. A thermostat that only works
when you are around can also save you a lot of money and power. The idea is simple, but it makes
major differences. The same counts for automatic lighting, this can also save you a lot of money and
power. Also the safety at home can increase significantly when installing IOT devices.

IOT at home makes life much easier and saves you a lot of time and money. You can use this money
and time to do other things. Of course, the internet of things is not only useful at home, but it is the
kind of IOT I would have most benefits from.

(Council, 2017)

WHATS THE BIGGEST RISK ASSOCIATED WITH THE INTERNET OF THINGS?

The biggest risk of IoT is internet hacking. When hackers have access to your IOT devices, they can do
a lot of bad things. Most IOT devices are protected with a personal password but that is often not
enough. That is why it is very important to have a very good security system, especially in businesses
and with crucial devices. Not only is it important to have a good security system, but it is also
important to check it regularly.

(Blaisdell, 2017)

(David, 2017)

2
WHO IS GOING TO BENEFIT FROM IT?
A lot of people benefit from the IOT. IOT doesnt only make life easier and cheaper and more
sustainable for you personally but also hospitals and health care benefit from IOT. IOT in healthcare
causes a decrease in costs, improved outcomes of treatments, improved disease management,
reduced errors, enhanced management of drugs and enhanced patient experience.

Also warehouses are benefitting from IoT. The way of doing business has changed significantly since
IOT. Without IOT managing inventory would be a lot more timeconsuming and complicated and it
would be much more difficult to keep products fresh and valuable.

(McCarthy, 2017)

(Patel, 2017)

CONCLUSION
We can conclude that the internet of things is very important and it will only become more
important. It affects a lot of people in a positive, but sometimes also negative way. Nowadays, a lot
of devices are already connected with IOT, but in the future, almost all devices will be connected.
This will bring a lot of benefits and it will make life much easier, sustainable, it will save you a lot of
time and it will reduce costs.

But, there are not only benefits but also a lot of risks connected to the internet of things. IOT will
make it much easier for hackers to get into your computer system and to access all your data. They
can even change and steal your data. This is especially dangerous in companies with a lot of
competitors.

REFLECTION
I liked this assignment and I think it was very interesting. I believe that the internet of things will
become very important in the future, so it is important to know what it is and to know the risks of it. I
think this kind of assignment was perfect to get to know the concept of IOT. It was nice that you
could choose what questions to answer, so you could chose the ones that interest you the most.

The assignment was long and I have spent a lot of time looking up articles that passed the criteria. It
was difficult to find good articles that were written after 01/01/2017. This took me a lot of time.
Sometimes I even had to base the question I chose on the date they were written, which is a pity,
since the other questions were very interesting as well. I think it might be better to be change the
minimum date, so we can use more articles and articles of better quality.
