Frustrated and angered residents are taking

road conditions and snow banks blocking in
vehicles.

plowed school-bus routes, and vehicles sus-
taining damage from piles of ice and slush left

Community rallies behind birthday
wish to brighten kids Christmas

Soon-to-be 70 years old, Carolyn
Larden had her birthday wish come
true early this year and managed to
cross a big item off her bucket list on
account of a multitude of contribu-
tions from the community.
Instead of material items and birth-
day cards, the Strathmore resident
asked her friends and family to help
her stuff 70 shoeboxes with items
sanctioned for the Samaritans Purse
Canadian Operation Christmas Child.
After a month of accumulating hun-
dreds of items to fill 35 boxes for boys
and girls respectively, aged five to
nine, Larden spent four straight days
on her living room floor sorting and
dividing up donations per shoebox.
Although she had contributed two
to five boxes per year to the project
over a 20-year span, Larden had never
tackled a project of this magnitude.
My friends all know Im turning the
ripe age of 70 so rather than have
people give me gifts or cards I asked
for my bucket list, which is to send 70;
I wanted to do something for some-
body else and people stepped up to
the plate like you would not believe,
said Larden.
I would come home and thered be
a bag of donated items. Pencil crayons
and little baby dolls for the girls hang-
ing on the back step, and somebody
just dropped them off. I went wow,
is this ever nice. And then if I was
shopping out somewhere and some-
body heard what I was doing, theyd
say here is $20, go shopping.
Many friends were motivated to
help her reach her goal, but donations
also trickled in from members of the
community unbeknown to Larden.
Some people gave her money to pur-
chase items, others sent her cheques,
and a few stopped by her house to
drop off donations included 84 pairs
of kid socks.
The boxes quickly filled with hair
accessories, beads, rubber balls, a Zip-
loc bag with a homemade facecloth
and a bar of soap, colouring books,
pencil crayons and notepads for the
girls, and marbles, toy trucks, and
socks for the boys.
On top of that, each box received
several balloons and a brand new ball

Samaritans Purse is a Christian re-
lief organization that provides aid to
victims of war, poverty, famine, perse-
cution, disaster, and disease. Canadian
Operation Christmas Child distributes
shoeboxes filled with gifts to children
in developing countries and over the
years has already impacted 135 mil-
lion children.
Last year over 660,000 shoeboxes
packed by Canadians made their way
to children in Latin America, the Ca-
ribbean, West Africa nations and the
Ukraine.
In many of these countries, these
children are so poor they have never
received a gift in their entire lives, and
so for them to receive a box full of
stuff that may not be that useful to Ca-
nadians but is hugely useful to them
from people theyve never met from a
country they may have never heard of,
is just tremendous, said Frank King,
news media relations manager for Sa-
maritans Purse Canada.
We have a lot of senior citizens
who love doing this. In many cases
theyre grandparents, like myself,
and they think about kids like their
grandkids but who dont have any-
thing like what their grandkids have.
It touches their heart and they say I
want to change that. I want to play my
little part in packing my shoeboxes to
change that somehow for kids in the
developing world.
Larden estimated that a total of 25
people, including small local busi-
nesses, provided items and monetary
donations to help her fill her 70 shoe-
boxes, which she dropped off at West-
mount Elementary last week ready

At 14 years of age, Justin Cook be-
came a slave to alcohol, a 21-year habit
he wasnt able to break until he hit rock
bottom and received proper treatment
in Calgary, Fort Macleod, and Drum-
heller.
As his life turned 180 degrees for the
better in 2015, the Strathmore local de-
cided to give back to the detox facili-
ties that provided him with a promising
future.
Aware of the lack of resources for
current members, Cook collected items
in various communities last year and
was blown away by the community
support. This year, however, donations
arent as forthcoming, and the 37-year-
old entrepreneur is reaching out to the
Strathmore community his largest
supporter last year to help with do-
nations towards the Renfrew Recovery
Centre in Calgary and the Foothills De-
tox centre in Fort Macleod.
We filled two pick-up trucks; it was
bigger than I expected, he said. This
year hasnt been like that and I dont
know if my expectations are high be-
cause of last year or maybe its because
of the economy. The facilities are gov-
ernment funded, but their funding is for
wages, electricity, food and thats about
it. A lot of the guys that come in there,
myself included, have nothing. A couple
years ago I had a bag of clothes, and
they have nothing to give them without
donations.
The project, Donations for Detox,
aims to collect mens and womens py-
jamas, undergarments, socks, alcohol-
free hygiene products, board games,
puzzles, and colouring books and cray-
ons.
Last year, Cook reached out to Strath-
more, Calgary, Chestermere, Langdon
and Airdrie. In addition to two trucks
worth of donations, Cook also received
nearly $600 in cash donations that he
used to purchase bus tickets for the
Calgary treatment centre, and long-
distance phone cards for Fort Macleod,
where most clients are from out of
town and long distance phone calls are
not made available.
Several local businesses also contrib-
uted to the cause previously.
The initiative, which he has been col-
lecting items for since June, is dear to
Cooks heart, since he has experienced
first-hand the effect the centres can
have on ones life.
I had to hit a bottom and want to
change, and then the detox gave me the
opportunity to do that, he said. Have

of the facility last year, and even more
seeking help this year, staff at the cen-
tre are grateful for any donations made.

On the 40th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion,
John Scheer stood beside hundreds of WW2 veter-
ans in Dover, England waiting to cross the channel
to Calais, France. A man in a grey suit took notice
of his nametag and shared the story of a young
man from Strathmore nicknamed Junior who
they hadnt been able to locate yet on the reunion.
Scheers friend, George Freeman, stood only a few
feet away when he pointed him out. What followed
next is a is a memory Scheer is unlikely going to
forget, and a true testament of the impact Free-
man, Strathmores last known D-Day veteran who
passed away on Nov. 6, had on those around him.
He stepped over in front of George, put his hand
on each shoulder looked at his nametag, lifted his
face to the sky and yelled, Junior! I tell you here
they came, there were fellows coming from each
direction, I tell you the reunion was in progress
now, Scheer remembered with a chuckle. It was
so interesting and wonderful to see and I was so
appreciative of George inviting me to go with him.
Freeman was born and raised in Strathmore and
joined the army at the age of 18. He was in the
first wave on D-Day the Battle of Normandy
and walked away without a scratch after serving
for 11 months, when the war ended in 1945. Upon
his return, Freeman devoted his life to his family,
his passions, and the community with such fervor
that it earned him the title of Mr. Strathmore by
family and community members. While those who
knew him remember his quick and witty comments
and playful sense of humour, the father of two and
grandfather to three loved to share his knowledge.
Having punched the clock at Ducks Unlimited for
53 years, Freeman or Mr. DU played an instru-
mental role in wetland and waterfowl habitat con-
servation within Southern Alberta. Freeman took
specimens, like stuffed ducks, geese, small beavers
and muskrats to classrooms in the area and edu-
cated students on the environment and conserva-
tion. In the 1970s he visited the Carseland school,
where he became a strong influence in the life of
Craig Bishop.
Ive known George my whole life, he was quite
a mentor to me when I was young and looking at
my career, said Bishop, manager of environmental
services and education for Alberta.
The thing about George was that he was not just
educating the youth, but the public at large. He was
like that with everything; his time in the war effort,
the Canadian Legion and all the other things that
he was a community leader in the Strathmore area
for. It was just part of the way he was and what he
stood for.
He had the ability to talk to anybody and every-
body. He influenced a lot of people and a lot of the
legacy that we have at Ducks Unlimited is squarely
set on the foundation that George set. He had a

Many of the projects Freeman started in the
1940s, 1950s, and 1960s are still in existence and
functioning as waterfowl habitat today. According
to Bishop, Freemans name is known to members
of the corporation ranging from coast to coast.
But his involvement didnt end there. The Strath-
more local helped with choirs, plays, and charities
and even emceed the Strathmore Summer Games
in 1984 as well as many weddings and anniversa-
ries.
Since 1977, Freeman and Scheer visited schools
on Remembrance Day and vastly promoted the
Poster Poem and Essay contest. He served as fire
chief of Strathmore for 13 years, as director of the
Calgary Zoological Society from 1951 to 1974, and
as president of the golf course and curling rink
in the 1950s. He was also instrumental in the cre-
ation of Strathmores history book, The Village that
Moved, in 1986. Nearly a decade later, Freeman
also wrote the history book for the 50th anniver-
sary of the Western Irrigation District, Flow beyond
the Weir.
Hes someone I always admired for being so in-
volved in the community and always helping peo-
ple out, helping at community functions, talking
to school kids and keeping the Remembrance Day
memories alive, and definitely someone to who
Strathmore was always home, said Larry Freeman,
Georges son. He was 94, he was very happy. He
had a lot of things he did in his life.
Freemans nephew, Wally, also remembered his
uncle as someone who always lend a helping hand.
He recalled George and his wife, Helene, setting
up aid stations during the Strathmore Lions Clubs
walkathons, and rubbing peoples feet and handing
out dry socks.
Although his family said there had been multiple
opportunities to relocate to another community
and even province, Freeman always refused.
Then in 2010, the Town of Strathmore honoured
him by changing the name of the East Boundary
Road to George Freeman Trail. Furthermore, he re-
ceived the highest honour bestowed upon anyone
in France two years ago: the Order of the Legion of
Honour to France.
While John Scheer said the last years hadnt been
as productive for Freeman, he emphasized the tre-
mendous record the individual left behind for oth-
ers to emulate. However, his wife Ann expressed
a different view of the friend she will miss dearly.
He had such a wicked sense of humour and his
eyes were sparkling all the time, I think he just
wanted to enjoy life, said Ann Scheer. He was liv-
ing the lives of all his friends that didnt make it,
Im sure. He was doing his darnest to make life
better in Canada, that those guys didnt die in vain.
He was just a real nice, ordinary guy doing extraor-
dinary things.
If anyone deserves a final tribute, by gosh, there
was a good Canadian for you.

The Town of Strathmore is hosting the first an-
nual Downtown Christmas Night Market. The mar-
ket is being held in downtown Strathmore, and
will feature a variety of local artisan vendors,
downtown businesses will be open late, and there
will be a variety of different Christmas activities.
The market is taking place in various locations
throughout downtown.
The market is being held as a way to encourage
people to shop locally during the holiday season.
There is a variety of unique stores, with wonder-
ful potential gifts, in the downtown and people
should take advantage of this local shopping op-
portunity during the holiday season.
The market is also being held as a way to help
charities during the holiday season. The Town of
Strathmore is taking non-perishable food bank do-
nations at the night market, as a way to support
people in need during the holiday season.
The market is going to have fire pits, hot choco-
late, present wrapping, popcorn, Christmas crafts
for kids, carolers, hayrides, and a lighting of the
tree ceremony, for everyone to enjoy!
The Downtown Christmas Night Market is being
held on Nov. 24, from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m.

The Cheadle 4-H club had their first meeting of
the year on Oct. 10.
My name is Jamie Hilton, I am the new reporter
for the Cheadle club and very excited for the job.
This is my third year doing the sheep projects, I
love them - they are my favorite one of all.
There were lots of familiar faces as well as some
new ones. There are lots of exciting things to come
this year, however, we started with our yearly elec-

kin said residents can reduce their water con-
sumption and get rebates from the county for low
water use fixtures.
Seniors can get emergency help for utilities ar-
rears once every three years from the province
through Alberta Seniors and Housing, if given a
disconnect notice. The account must be in the ap-
plicants name. Low-income seniors who rent may
be able to qualify for community housing or sub-
sidies through government programs that include
utilities.
CLOGGED SEWER LINES
Clogged sewer lines or broken pipes can lead to
expensive repairs. Determining whether it is the
county or homeowners responsibility is some-
times a difficult matter.
Wheatland Countys updated Water and Waste-
water bylaw 2017-19 sets out clarifications for res-

Lines can block up when roots penetrate the
pipes, or old pipes corrode, or digging and ground
shifts damage pipes. One sign of trouble is wa-
ter burbling up out of household drain outlets.
If that happens, it may be a good idea to consult
a plumber, who can clear simple problems, or at
least scope the line to determine if there is damage
that is more extensive. Wheatland County states in
their bylaw that property owners are responsible
to keep sewer lines on their property free of de-
bris, and provide adequate cover and insulation
on the lines. Lines to the property are the county
responsibility and lines at the property line to the
house are the property owners responsibility.
REMUNERATION FOR COUNCIL
Pay raises can be a contentious issue and Wheat-
land Countys new council members questioned
whether they should forgo a raise this year due to
economic downturns.
We have been through this process before,
said Councillor Ben Armstrong. In the past, coun-
cil dealt with our own per diems. Several terms
ago, we put it out to the public so that it takes it
away from council making their own decision for
their own remuneration. As council we have no
input as to what the outside group decides.
The rate suggested by the citizen panel was one
per cent. Wheatland County Councillor Scott Klas-
sen said it is important to listen to recommenda-
tions put forth from the appointed committees.
John MacArthur, Wheatland Countys human
resources manager, said a number of factors are
used to determine the rate, such as cost of living.
Reviews will be done in 2019, including compari-
sons with other municipalities for conference re-
imbursements. It was asked that comparisons be
brought forward for council information.
I dont want the perception to be that we are
doing it for the money, said Councillor Tom Ikert.
Council voted to increase their per diem and
honorarium amounts by one per cent effective
Jan. 1, 2018.
PROPERTY ARREARS LEAD TO AUCTION
There were 51 properties in tax arrears this year
in Wheatland County. This lead to five properties
that were put up for auction, as owners did not
arrange for payment. Inquiries and bids can be
made at the Wheatland County office. Properties
are sold as is.

Stone said more hampers are needed each year. Wheatland
County council was asked to contribute a $3,300 donation,
which typically goes to supply turkeys for the hampers. Last
year, 260 hampers were given out and the society expects an
equal amount will be needed this year. The group is holding
their Stuff a Bus campaign on Nov. 18 at Sobeys, Walmart,
Co-op and No Frills stores to kick off the donation campaign.
Stone said handling the donations has posed a space chal-
lenge in the pavilion used for assembling the hampers. They
handle over 33,000 items each year. Stone suggests that ad-
ditional shelving would help with sorting and storage. Ham-
per distribution is scheduled for Dec. 20 to 21.
The society always needs volunteers, and those interest-
ed can contact Strathmore or Wheatland FCSS. Council ap-

Expanding employment and business opportunities is
a task Wheatland County Council gave to members of the
Wheatland County Economic Development Board.
Marcy Field, a representative for the board, said part of
that responsibility is to promote education opportunities for
business people. On Nov. 7, she asked council for $10,000
to develop one of the boards ideas. They want to bring in
motivational speakers Colin Sprake, Roger Brooks and Doug
Griffiths for a series of talks to the local business community.
The series would be scheduled throughout 2018-2019.
To finance the events, the expected 100-150 attendance
fees, of approximately $99 for the full package lineup, would
pay for meals and facility rental. The committee is looking
at Rosebud for the first speaking engagement on Feb. 27,
2018. The money requested from municipal councils, other
partners and grants would pay the speaker costs.

Growth expected for metal
fabrication industries

With the oil and gas downturn, it has
been said that Alberta needs to diver-
sify to create income and employment.
Community Futures Wild Rose has an
idea to promote industrial growth and
employment in rural areas.
We have several mandates and one
is community and economic develop-
ment. In our region, we had a project
set up to see what metal fabrication is
all about, said David Petrovich, busi-
ness analyst from Community Futures
Wild Rose.
Community Futures Wild Rose col-
laborated with the Alberta Ministry of
Labour, the federal government and
Rocky View County to research labour
market issues that would support man-
ufacturing industries in this area. Petro-
vich said a similar program in Austra-
lia developed the formula for business
development, generating successful
steps to nurture and develop business
growth.
The metal fabrication industry was
chosen as a target group, to generate a
template that could later be applied to
other industry development.
He stated that the process involves
three stages, with the group already
completing the first stage, which con-
tains labour market research and asset
analysis on the metal fabrication indus-
try.
The most important thing that came
out of that (first stage research) were
recommendations that we needed to
engage with government, work with
the educators, develop an industry or-
ganization and develop a strategic plan
for metal fabrication, said Petrovich.
He asked Wheatland County council
for $3,000 to support the second and
third stage. Newell County have also
been asked for support, while Brooks
and Bassano have committed to fund-
ing.
The initiative already has support
from Rocky View County, Community
Futures Entre-Corp, Olds College, Bow
Valley College and Skills Metal Inc.
Owners of Skills Metal Inc., one of
the project partners, were asked to
provide industry contacts and informa-
tion for the study. It was emphasized
that they are not given any preferential
treatment in results or application of
the study.
The federal government has identi-
fied that by 2022, metal fabrication
will be a leading industry of growth
in Canada. Wheatland County has also
identified manufacturing as a potential
growth industry in the county. Metal
fabrication supports several supply
chains for agricultural products. There

memories. Hester wants to stay, Ruth
wants to go, and Bruce is conflicted.
Prosperous days seem a thing of the
past.
Wickens plays the role of Ruth. Mag-
gie MaKenzie, another graduating stu-
dent, is playing Hester, and RSA gradu-
ate John McIvor plays Bruce. Third-year
student Anne Salkeld is Manning, a real
estate agent.
The weather has unsettled the char-
acters, Wickens said. That tension is
felt by the audience. The seclusion of
the house, the raging storm and the
people trapped inside their memories
make for an eerie story.
The words of the play, the sounds of
howling winds, and the nod to a rick-
ety house for the set make it feel very
bare and vulnerable.
Anna Schroeder, costume and set
designer, has really latched on to the
bare bones of a house, Wickens said,
and Alixandra Cowman is creating
some delicious sound design.
Im really proud to be able to work
on a show that was written by a Cana-
dian woman in 1938, Wickens said.
Yet it was the story itself that drew
her to this play for her final project.

Strathmore hosts annual atom tournament

Back and bigger than ever, the fifth annual Strath-
more Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) atom tourna-
ment was a success on many levels.
The demand for entries last year was so huge, the
SMHA decided to double the tourneys size.
Last year we had over 70 teams show interest in our
tournament, said SMHA president Natalie Haslund.
Based on the number of teams that showed interest,
we needed more ice time. With the added cost of one
more rink, we wanted to fill it to its maximum, so we
took this opportunity to go big and make it work.
The results showed 40 teams five local and 35
teams from elsewhere flock to Wheatland County, as
games were played at the Strathmore Family Centre,
Gleichen, and Standard, Nov. 10-12.
While the total number of entries doubled, there
were still only five local Strathmore Storm teams.
The entire format of the tournament had to be
changed as well. In years past, a simple round robin
sorted teams out into playoff placement. That was not
possible this year with all the entries. Instead, they
used a bracket format with an A, B and C side champi-
onship, guaranteeing teams a minimum of three games
regardless of their outcome in the opener.
We felt it was a very competitive tourney. We had
a lot of games end up 3-3 and went off to shootouts,
which was fun to watch, said Haslund. We did have
a couple blowouts, but not too many. So for the most
part, they were fun, competitive games to watch re-

This year, no local teams hoisted a trophy in the A,
B or even C side brackets. The closest team to reach a
title was Strathmore Storm C, which fell 9-3 to the Clive
Blackhawks Nov. 12 at the Family Centre gold rink.
The Storm C were optioned to the B side after they
lost their opener Nov. 10 6-5 to the Bow Valley Flames
in Standard. That same day, they dumped the St. Albert
Saints 7-3 in the gold arena. Playing in the B semis
Nov. 11, the Storm clipped the Whitemud Rebels 4-3 in
the gold arena.
The Storm A won their tourney opener 4-3 against a
different Bow Valley Flames squad Nov. 10 at the Fam-
ily Centre blue rink. In the A side quarterfinals, they
were handed a 14-2 loss to the Medicine Hat Hounds
Nov. 11 at the gold arena. They wrapped up the tour-
nament with a 9-2 loss to the Redcliff Grizzlies Nov. 11
at the blue arena.
The Storm B also opened up their tourney with a
win. They downed a Bow Valley Flames team 9-6 Nov.
10 at the gold arena. From there, they fell 4-2 to the
eventual A side champs, the Irvine Bulldogs 4-2 Nov. 11
at the gold arena. Playing on the B side, they wrapped
up their tourney with a 7-2 loss to the Cochrane Rock-
ies Nov. 11 at the gold arena.
The Storm D went to work in Standard. They dropped
their opener 7-6 to the Millwood Huskies Nov. 10. They
bounced back with a 13-1 thumping of the Cochrane
Rockies that evening, also in Standard. Playing their
only game in Strathmore, the Storm were downed 13-1
in their final game against the Southwest Cougars Nov.
11 in the blue arena.

The Storm E was the final local team to compete.
They went winless on the weekend, dropping a game
to the Edmonton Oil Queens, 3-2 in Gleichen Nov. 10.
They also fell 9-3 to the Chestermere Lakers later that
day in Standard and wrapped up the tournament with
a 2-1 loss to the Whitemud Rebels Nov. 11 in Standard.
With double the tourney size, SMHA was able to raise
enough money to the point where they are able to give
between $1,000 and $1,500 back to teams in the pro-
gram. There was also enough money to provide each
of the kids a tournament t-shirt, grab bag and a hockey
puck hacky sack. The program was able to raise such
funds thanks to a strong showing in the 50-50 draw,
raffle tickets and a triple-threat board fundraiser.
We had a ton of positive feedback from people who
attended the tournament, said Haslund. Being that it
was our first time holding a tournament this size, of
course there was some constructive criticism, but we
made a note of what we can improve on for when we
host the novice tournament.
Looking down the road, the SMHA will also use
some of the money raised last weekend to purchase
divider boards, which will be required for novice tour-
naments in two years time.
The novice tournament runs Jan. 5-7, 2018, and will
also feature a much larger draw, as they will host six
local teams and 35 teams from elsewhere in Alberta.
We had a ton of volunteers and parents help out
this weekend and support our atom program, said
Haslund. It really made for a great weekend, and we
are looking for much of the same when the novice
tournament takes place in the New Year.

Prescott enjoys first CFR as a bullfighter

They certainly dont get the glory the
guys they are protecting do, but the job
is just as important. And now, one local
bull fighter is getting the chance to live
out a lifelong dream.
Ty Prescott has been fighting bulls for
10 years, and he found out 10 days after
his 32nd birthday, that he was voted in
by his peers to be an alternate bullfight-
er for the 44th Canadian Finals Rodeo.
It was a dream come true to be vot-
ed in, for sure. Its something Ive al-
ways wanted to do, said Prescott, who
was born and raised five miles west of
Strathmore. If I get the chance to go
in, Ill have big shoes to fill, but it will
definitely be pretty cool.
The Top 12 bull riders from the Ca-
nadian Professional Rodeo Association
cast their votes in September on who
they thought were the best three bull-
fighters in the nation. Prescott was for-
tunate to finish third, behind Brett Mo-
nea and Scott Way.
The vote goes to the guys who have
the most dedication. Our life is in their
hands, so we want the guys who do the
best work, work the best together as a
team, who read the bulls the best and
can save us from the bulls, said local
product and bull riding legend Scott
Schiffner, who competed in his record
17th CFR, having won the event twice
before. This year, Ty took it more seri-
ous. Hes got the drive and desire to get
in the ring as often as possible.
Its just one of them deals where he
went to a lot of bull riding events and
now he gets to go to the CFR. Great for
him.
Unfortunately for Prescott, all he got
to do was sit in the best seat in the
house, while Monea and Way worked

riders qualifying for the CFR, which ran

in Edmonton, they only required two
bullfighters to be in the rodeo ring at
the same time. The two bullfighters
never sustained as much as a scratch,
so Prescott was left hanging out in
the bucking chutes, helping riders get
ready for their round.
It was really cool to be there and
feel the atmosphere of the event. It re-
ally fueled my fire to work even harder
next year. Id much rather be standing
in the dirt with the bulls than up on the
chutes, said Prescott.

Schiffner soaks in final CFR at Northlands Coliseum

Scott Schiffner, one of Canadas great-
est bull riders, closed the doors on his
experience at the Northlands Coliseum
on his own terms.
The Strathmore product was thrilled
and honoured to make his record 17th
appearance at the Canadian Finals Ro-
deo up in Edmonton Nov. 8 to 12. The
44th installment of the CFR marked
the final time it would be hosted at the
Northlands Coliseum.
Earlier in the week, after quickly get-
ting ejected from a mean bull named
Buckington who Schiffner thinks
is one of the top bulls in Canada
Schiffner predicted that his final ride in
Northlands would be an emotional one.
Schiffner didnt disappoint, as he
rode Blow Me Away for his best ride of
the week, finishing with an 86.50 and
winning $8,337.50 for finishing in sec-
ond place on the day.
You know, it was one of them deals
being in that building after so many
years, you never want to leave after get-
ting bucked off, so I held on as long as
I could, said Schiffner. It was a sad
day leaving that building for the last
time knowing we will never be back;
I had spent a lot of years there. But at
the same time, it was a fulfilling way to
leave.
It was the last of a long list of mem-
ories that dates back to his time as a
kid, when he attended the CFR with his
family. As a young man, he attended
the CFR in the steer riding for his first
official national competition in 1994.

From there, he went on to compete in
more CFRs than anyone before him. In
total, Schiffner has ridden in nearly 40
per cent of the CFRs at Northlands.
I have thousands of memories in this
building. It will be a sad day when the
rodeo is no longer here, said Schiffner.
Ill never forget showing up as a boy
in the steer riding and having 14,000
people cheer you on when you enter
the ring. Its a feeling like no other and
one I still enjoy to this day.
Obviously, one of his fondest mem-
ories at the CFR came back in 2001,
when he captured his first national title.

After six days of riding, Schiffner was
tied with another bull riding icon, Kel-
ly Armstrong. So a ride-off was called
upon, and Schiffner delivered, picking
up the $4,000 purse.
Kelly was one of the best bull rid-
ers that never won a title. To be in a
ride-off against a cowboy like that was
something pretty special, said Schiff-
ner.
The magic returned 11 years later,
when Schiffner captured his second
Canadian title. This time, for his efforts,
he brought home $11,000.
The CFR isnt even viewed as a com-
petition for Schiffner these days. He was
seen several times down in the bucking
chutes, helping the novice riders pre-
pare for their ride during the week, and
was encouraging of other bull riders
each night, despite everyone gunning
for the $11,212.50 in daily winnings in
the go-round.
We are all friends out there. Its an
honour to have them look up to me, but
even if they are 10 or 15 years younger
than me, I still look up to them. You
can look at everyone as competition, or
you can try and take something posi-
tive from each rider and use it to your
advantage, said Schiffner.
The week didnt start out that great
for Schiffner, as he was bucked off
near the end of his first ride on Goose
Bumps.
Like he has for his entire career,
Schiffner put his hand back in the rope
the next day and held on for the full
eight seconds on Goose Bumps, record-
ing a 86.00, placing him second and
winning another $8,337.50.
The CFR as a whole was great as it
always is. It was great to see the fans
come out. My performance could have
been better, I didnt win a Canadian
title, but at least I won a bit of money,
said Schiffner.
The CFR closed the books on the 2017
season. The 2018 season already begins
this weekend at the Canadian Western
Agribition rodeo in Regina. After that,
there will be a lengthy break until the
next big rodeo in the New Year. Schiff-
ner is looking forward to some healthy
time off following his performance in
Regina.

Strathmores Roy revels at first trip to Canadian Finals Rodeo

The final Canadian Finals Rodeo was
memorable for Strathmore product Ri-
ley Roy in more ways than one.
For Roy and his team roping partner
Brady Chappel, it was their first trip to
the CFR as competitors. Roy grew up
watching the event as a kid with two
uncles who competed in steer wres-
tling.
The 24-year-old Roy finished 10th as
a header in the team roping in the Ca-
nadian Professional Rodeo Association
(CPRA) standings. Roy put in some se-
rious hours this season: he cashed in
$15,915.39 in 44 rodeos.
We put a lot of work to get here,
so it was pretty exciting to be in the
box getting ready for my first run, look-
ing up and seeing the crowd, said Roy,
who is wrapping up his fourth year on
tour.
It certainly wasnt the start the team
was looking for, as they failed to record
a time through the first three runs.
Roy was taking care of business on
his end. He roped the steer all three
times, but his partner, Chappel, had a
difficult time finding his rhythm.
Sometimes you just have some
tough luck. Brady is one of the best
heelers I know. He will get it going,
said Roy following his Nov. 10 perfor-
mance, expressing his level of patience
in his partner. With the rounds paying
as much as they do, all you need is a
couple good rounds to get back in it.
The strategy was simple from that
point out.
Were just going to go as fast as we
can and hopefully we win a couple go-
rounds, said Roy.
Thats exactly what happened for
Roy. The following morning, the team
pulled off a 5.7 second run, but it was
nearly one second too long from winning money.
Later that same night, Roy and Chappel had every-
thing working, as they finished fourth in a time of
4.6 seconds, winning $2,587.50 each, and etching
their name in the CFR record books.
Weve roped that steer in the past and we
picked him heading into the CFR. It was a pret-
ty easy steer, he was a little slower than the ones
weve been roping earlier this week and we had a
good start on him, said Roy. We talked and said
that we wanted to be more aggressive going after
the steers.
The aggressiveness caught up to them on their
final run Nov. 12, when Roy got clipped for break-
ing the barrier and Chappel only roped one foot,
giving them a 15-second penalty.
Roy and Chappel left their first CFR with a little
cash in their pocket and the feeling of accomplish-
ment for a years worth of work.
I was excited to get to (Northlands Coliseum)
before it closed down, said Roy, who didnt take
any souvenirs from the rodeos 44th and final in-
stalment at the historic Edmonton arena.

The latest superstar to come out of the Foothills
CFR Chemicals Bisons programs just picked up
his first international medal.
Peyton Krebs was a key contributor in Team
Red was clipped by Team Russia 5-3. Despite the
1-0-2-0 record, Canada Red still managed to ad-
vance to the quarterfinals, where they would meet
Canada Black.
When we played Russia, it turned into a pretty
heated battle. The fans really got into it and were

League as the other top picks from the CHL.
I wasnt involved in the naming of the captains,
but it was one of those things where he had the
expectations to be one of the best players and
there was a certain level of responsibility that
goes with that. I heard that he played really well.
Hes a skilled player and he has the work ethic
and motor that drives him and challenges him at
this event, said Team Canada Head Scout Brad
McEwen.
That was pretty cool. It definitely came with a
lot of responsibility, but I couldnt have asked for
a better group to captain, said Krebs.
Canada Red got off to a slow start, but heated
up when it mattered most.
Red opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to
Team Finland Nov. 5 at the North Peace Arena in
Fort St. John.
Canada trailed 2-1 with six minutes left on the
clock in the second, when Krebs had the puck in
the corner. He staved off a hit from Finnish de-
fenceman Ville Heinola in the corner and got the
puck up top to Colton Kammerer. Krebs immedi-
ately called for the puck back and used Heinola as
a screen at the top of the left circle, as he wired a
shot past Kari Piiroinen blocker side.
The following day Krebs was held off the score
sheet as Canada Red thumped the defending
champions Team Sweden 7-2 at North Peace Are-
na.
For Canada Red, it marked the squads first med-
al at the tournament. Canada, which now enters
three teams Black, White and Red used to
be split up into territories, having only made the
switch three years ago. The tournament first be-
gan in 1986, as Quebec downed the Soviet Union
in the gold medal game.
He was going up against the top 2001-born
players in the world and he responded very well.
He is a good player and somebody we are going
to have to keep our eyes on moving forward in
our program, said McEwen.
Playing their final round robin game, Canada
an entire crowd cheering you on as a member of
Team Canada, said Krebs.
Krebs was instrumental in the 4-3 victory Nov.
9 at the Encana Events Centre in Dawson Creek,
as he assisted on all four goals by the Red team.
He wasnt just turning heads in the stands and the
press boxes, he was turning the heads of players
on his own bench.
Coming in, I never thought I would like him as
a person for all the times he has slashed through
our teams. Once I got to know him, I realized how
great of a person he really was. Then on the ice,
the way he controls the puck and makes plays is
phenomenal. It was a great decision for him to be
chosen as our captain, said Krebs Canada Red
teammate Jackson van de Leest.
Canada Red met the Czech Republic in the
semis. Canada advanced to the finals following
their 3-2 shaving of the Czechs, where they ran
into a powerhouse American team.
The Americans led the tournament in goals for
(34), allowed the second fewest (15) and carried
the best goal differential (plus-19) in six games.
In their semifinal, they blasted Canada White
9-1 before their tilt with Krebs and Canada Red.
The Americans proved to be too much to han-
dle, as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first
period during the gold medal game Nov. 11 at the
Encana Events Centre.
With the final being streamed on TSN.ca, Krebs
made his presence felt in the attempted come-
back. In the second period, he set up a Bowen
Byram point shot on the power play, for his fifth
assist of the tourney. His five assists gave him the
fifth most assists of the tourney.
The Hockey Challenge was the first step for all
the players on the international stage. The next
big tournament for the future NHL prospects will
be the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament takes
place in Europe and is designed for U18 players.
It is used as the top tournament for NHL Entry
Draft prospects and prospects for the U20 World
Junior Team.
It was a pretty humbling experience, getting to
play against the best kids from around the world
that are as old as me. Whenever you play against
the best, it motivates you to work harder to get to
their level. I definitely came back to Cranbrook
and want to work harder to continue to elevate
my game, said Krebs.
Krebs took a brief leave from the ICE to partici-
pate in the tournament. The 16-year-old is thriving
in his first season in the Western Hockey League.
Through 15 games he sits third on the team with
three goals and 13 points. Last year, Krebs took
centre stage with the Bisons of the Alberta Midget
Hockey League, as his 15 goals and 40 points in
29 games earned him the award of the leagues
Top Forward.
SACRIFICE
This week most of us had the

now enjoy.

CHIEFS PREPARE
FOR HURRICANES
The Wheatland Chiefs had the week-
end off following their closely played
1-1 tie against the top-ranked Leth-
bridge Hurricanes (11-0-2) in midget
action.
When the season resumes for the
defending provincial champions, they
will take part in a rematch with the
very same Hurricanes Nov. 17 at the
Strathmore Family Centre (7:30 p.m.).
It will be the third of four meetings be-
tween the two clubs this season. The
Hurricanes took the first matchup 3-1
back on Oct. 13 in Lethbridge.
The Chiefs (6-3-2) will also take part
in a midweek game, when they travel
to the Max Bell Centre #2 to battle the
CNHA Canucks (4-0) Nov. 22. It marks
the second time the Chiefs will play in
the Calgary division, as the puck is set
to drop at 6:15 p.m.
After owning the league leaderboard
last season, only one Chief sits in the
top-10. Lucas Muenchrath sits ninth
with six goals and 13 points.
WARRIORS REGROUP
The Wheatland Warriors (5-8-1) were
also off last weekend to make room
for the Strathmore Minor Hockey Asso-
ciation atom tournament. They will re-
sume SCAHL action Nov. 19, when they
host the Taber Golden Suns at the Fam-
ily Centre (7 p.m.). The Warriors are 0-1
against the Golden Suns (2-10-1) this
year, dropping a 4-3 decision back on
Oct. 22 in Strathmore.

Lydia Wallington of Namaka, AB
passed away quietly on November
11, 2017.
She was born in Birmingham, England on March
31, 1934 to parents Harold and Lilian Marston. In
1955, Lydia married Alan Edward Wallington and they
moved to Calgary in 1956 to start their new life. Even-
tually, they ended up in Namaka where she enjoyed
the peace and quiet of the Prairies. Lydia is survived
by her husband Al, children Susan Derbyshire and
Stuart Wallington; grandsons Jeff Derbyshire and
Brad Derbyshire; and her great granddaughter Faith
Derbyshire. A celebration of Life will be held in the
spring of 2018. Donations may be made directly to

The family is sad to announce the
2017 passing of Olga Newton at Sage-
wood Age Care in Strathmore after a lengthy battle
with dementia. She was predeceased by her loving
husband Bud in 1997. Olga raised all her children in
