Konkani drama enthrals a full house theatre

iatr (musical theatre)
lovers in Auckland were
in for yet another treat
recently when the Auckland Konkani
Actors staged Gorabo at Freemans
Bay Community Hall on Saturday,
November 4.
The full-house hall was evident of
the fact that the lovers of good art are
everywhere.
Tiatr is a type of musical theatre
popular in the state of Goa on the
west coast of India as well as in
Mumbai. The popularity has also
spread globally with expatriate
communities in the Middle East,
London and other cities around the
world where Konkani speakers have
a considerable presence.
The dramas are performed mainly
in the Roman Konkani dialects and
include a healthy dose of music,
dancing and singing.
Gorabo, the 11th Konkani drama
in Auckland, is written and directed
by Paul D'souza who himself is
a thespian.
The underlying message of
Gorabo was around making time
for the important things in life such
as family, relationships and love.
Quite often in todays fast-paced
world, we forfeit time with our loved
ones chasing money or getting side-
tracked with our busy careers.
The tiatr drove home this message
strongly and very emphatically.
The main focus of the play was to
encourage and inspire the youth

Gorabo, which means household,
explored the importance of family
dynamics in our lives and how it is
crucial to strike a balance between
work and family.
The story revolves around a New
Zealand based Goan migrant family.
The family is made up of
grandparents, Valerine (Iva) Freddy
(Francis), their son Terry (Sylvester),
his wife Cathy (Carmen) and their
daughter Kristina (Rebecca). It

(Paul), Balchao (Agnelo), Sorpotel

Terry is a workaholic, along with
his boss Jenny, who is obsessed with

pick up the pieces and extend their
support to keep the family together.
Stephen who is Freddys friends
son tries to save the marriage of
Terry and Cathy at the request of
Freddy and Valerine. Meanwhile, he
also has a history with Jenny. Jenny
and her step- brother, Michael also
have a strained relationship as he left
her when she was a child. This makes
her bitter towards him.
Agnelos opening song and
Cliftons song both had a very
important message on the values
that strengthen the bonds of a
family. Intertwined cleverly were
little snippets of local Konkani
comedy dominated by the stupefying
written by Goan comedian Diego
and performed by Arca (as Shanti),
Diego (as Bhudivont) and Agnelo
(as Bhachao). All the three had the
crowd wild with laughter.
Both the drama and comedy had a
vital message delivered with a great
speaking community. It was about
striving to keep a work-life balance
in a family and to spend quality time
with your family members which
in turn will enable to strengthen
family bonds.
The curtains were finally drawn
to the overwhelming applause of
the audience. Paul with his cast,
musicians and his backstage crew
put up an awesome performance that
enthralled the audience and had them
glued to their seats.
A core team of nearly 13 artists
rehearsed for five months to present
this powerful and heart rending play.
Director Paul expressed his joy
at the audiences response and
satisfaction in the fact that there
is still enough appetite for good
Konkani theatre amongst the
Konkani speaking community in
Auckland.

theatre for Auckland audience. They

Canterbury to celebrate
its anniversary this week
C
anterburys favourite community
event New Zealand Cup and Show
Week is being held in Christchurch
this week from November 11 to 18, with
three days of Canterbury Agricultural and
Pastoral Association Show (the A and P Show,
November 15-17) thrown in between.
Show Day is on Friday, November 17,
which is also a public holiday in Canterbury,
celebrating the regions official anniversary. The
public holiday was originally held on or around
December 15, the anniversary day of the old
Canterbury province marking the arrival of the
First Four Ships. It was moved to the Friday of
Show Week sometime between 1955 and 1958.
This year, the organisers are anticipating strong
attendance breaking all previous records, with
the weather forecast looking very promising.
Cup Week
E very year during the middle of November,
Canterbury celebrates the provinces
anniversary holiday with New Zealand Cup and
Show Week. First on the schedule is Cup Week,
with horse racing, both gallops and harness
racing, being the main events. There are local
fashion shows and displays, with shops selling
race-going fashion and hats.
This year, the Cups raced for are the
Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting
Cup races at Addington Raceway held on
Tuesday November 14, with the horse Lazarus,
driven by Mr Mark Purdon winning back-to-
back New Zealand Cup titles. Next up will
be the Christchurch Casino New Zealand
Cup and gavelhouse.com 1000 Guineas Day
at the Riccarton Park Raceway on Saturday,
November 18.

The A and P Show
A
fter Cup Week, the country comes to
town at the Canterbury Agricultural
and Pastoral Association Show. The annual
agricultural show has been held every year
since 1862, and is a three-day-event, featuring
500 trade exhibitors showcasing their services,
animals and products to an estimated 100,000
visitors. It also sees livestock and equestrian
madness, with 3,000 animals competing in over
1,700 classes for the best of the best titles and
over $100,000 in prize money. Along with the
finale of Ballantynes Grand Parade, the show
also features watchdog trials, wood chopping
competition, wool auction, shearing contests
and cooking demonstrations. (IWK will have a

he four ships - Randolph, Cressy, Sir
George Seymour, and Charlotte Jane,
brought the first organised group of
settlers to the Canterbury Associations new
settlement in 1850. Arguably, Charlotte Jane
carried about 154 passengers, Randolph 217,
Cressy 155,and Sir George Seymour 227.
Exact numbers are not known because the
surgeons lists and the shipping lists do not
match, and some young children were not
counted. Charlotte Jane anchored at Lyttelton
on Monday, December 16, 1850, and James
Edward Fitzgerald was the first to leap ashore.
The second of the ships, Randolph, arrived
on the afternoon of December 16, followed
by Sir George Seymour on December 17, and
Cressy on December 27.

long magnitude 7.8 earth quake at 12:02am,

first year of the event with the Minister of Civil
Defence Kris Faafoi announcing the reopening
of the Kaikura Harbour after a yearlong

the first ethnic cricket
tournament in Chch
T
he final of the first-ever ethnic T20
cricket tournament in Christchurch was
played on Sunday between the Kings
XI Punjab and T20 Blues, with the former
easily stamping their authority over the latter
with a winning margin of a whopping 136 runs.
Batting first, Kings XI scored a massive 250
runs at the loss of eight wickets. The highest
score was Navis 67, closely followed by their
captain Pavneet Nagras 62. Not yet done, Navi
arguably the tournaments best all-rounder
and man of the match for the finals returned
with a devastating spell of five wickets for 19
runs to restrict T20 Blues for 114 runs at the loss
of seven wickets. Interestingly, this (250) was
not the Kings XIs highest score. In an earlier
league game, they made 268 runs (tournaments
highest score) at the loss of four wickets in just
20 overs.
The final team standings were Kings Punjab
XI (1), T20 Blues (2), Maharaja Kings (3),
Nepal (4), Tamil Pasanga (5), and the Rebels
(6).
As reported earlier by The Indian
Weekender, the tournament was organised by
the Christchurch Metro Cricket Association
(CMCA) the organisation that looks after
the adult club and youth Cricket in the city
and supported by Christchurch Multicultural
Council (CMC).
President of CMC Surinder Tandon said,
This year proved that such an initiative is
very popular among ethnic communities. As
such the tournament is likely to grow even
more next year, involving 10 or more teams
mainly with players originating from the Indian
subcontinent.
Meanwhile, Rajiv Biala, the main organiser
of the Maharaja Kings team, which stood third
in the tournament, described the experience as
real good. We will be returning next year for
sure, and maybe win the trophy in 2018, he
said.
The final word belonged to Mike Harvey,
General Manager of CMCA, who gave his
concluding remarks, Our cricket festival has
been a great success, with much colour and
plenty of bit hits. It was fantastic to see many
individuals involved with the tournament who
have not played any formal cricket in New
Zealand, and we wish to provide opportunities
for them to take that step.
The cricket was played in a hard but
fair manner, and it was encouraging to see
players congratulating opponents on milestone
achievements. We thank the Christchurch
Multicultural Council for their support and
endorsement of the competition and to the
umpires who were involved. We were promoted
to offer the tournament after speaking with
a number of different people from within the
ethnic community and the enthusiasm with
which it was met. We aim to spread the word and
involved more teams in the 2018 competition.

Bainimarama tells: Why I took up COP presidency

he devastation left behind

And, it is one of the main
reasons why he took up the COP23
presidency.
In delivering his keynote address
at a United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) side event
Risk Informing Development,
organised on the margins of COP23
in Bonn, Germany on Monday, Mr
Bainimarama said he was now more
than ever determined to make Fiji
better placed to withstand a monster

able to adapt to the frightening new
era that is upon us. It is certainly one
of the reasons I took on the challenge
of the Presidency of COP23. Because
if I can do anything to assist the cause
of the vulnerable nations to draw
attention to their challenges, let alone
progress the climate action agenda, it
will have been well worth it.
Mr Bainimarama said he was
honoured by the confidence the
global community placed on Fiji to
help chart a way forward. He said
storms were not only occurring
in the Pacific region and that the
recent catastrophic weather event
Hurricane Ophelia which slammed
into Ireland and Scotland soon
afterwards was proof that we all
needed to act now.
Mr Bainimarama also reminded
people that had TCWinstonmade
landfall in Fijis more populated
areas, or the capital city or our
tourism areas, the blow to Fijis
economy would have been far worse.
This is the level of risk we
now face in Fiji along with every
vulnerable nation. That an extreme
weather event striking our entire
nation could cause destruction
on an epic scale. Catastrophic.

of a few terrifying hours, could wipe
out decades of development. And
make it impossible for us to meet our
Sustainable Development Goals.
He said the Fijian Government was
insisting that any new development
or capital project must take into
account climate risk before being
given the go-ahead.

members of the International Alliance to
Combat Ocean Acidification on Monday,
November 13.
The Ocean Alliance (OA) Alliance, founded by
the West Coast states of California, Washington,
Oregon and the Canadian Province of British
Columbia, welcomed five new members.
The newest official members including Fiji are
Sweden, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional
Environment Programme (SPREP) and the
scientific and technical organization Pacific
Community (SPC). Tokelau also announced
their intention to join the OA Alliance at the

T
hough the governments
radical measure of
demonetisation has disrupted
the economy and has hit the real
estate sector -- already reeling under
prolonged slowdown -- it will turn
out to be a blessing in disguise in the
medium-to-long term.
As an asset class, real estate has
been a big source of generating and
consuming black money. The cash
component in real estate has been
there at various levels, beginning
with land transactions where it
amounts to 30-50 per cent. The
cash payout is quite high in luxury
housing too.
The consumption of cash has been
as high as 30 per cent in secondary
market transactions.
The primary market transactions,
however, are by far bereft of cash
component as home purchases are
financed through loans from banks
and housing finance corporations. It
is another matter that even in primary
market deals, developers have been
encouraging cash payouts by luring
property buyers with good discounts
on property price.
The speculative buying by
investors through offerings like
underwriting and pre-launches has
also been involving cash payout,
leading to artificial price hike and
in turn making homes out of the
reach of masses. Demonetisation,
coupled with the governments
move to check benami transactions
through legislation and curbs on cash
transactions, was meant to clean up
the system.
This sudden shake up was,
however, not without its adverse
impacts. Demonetisation badly
affected the liquidity in the
capital-intensive real estate sector,

inflation which, in turn, helped RBI
in cutting interest rates, thereby
boosting home buying

stamp duty, will give further fillip
to the residential sector, particularly
affordable housing.

contentment with the Indian
economy. More than eight-in-ten say
economic conditions are good, up 19
percentage points since immediately
before the 2014 election.
And the share of adults who say
the economy is very good (30 per
cent) has tripled in the past three
years.

The entire demonetisation exercise
undertaken by the government and
aided by other reforms, like Benami
Property Act, RERA and GST, is to
be looked at in the backdrop of the
governments multi-pronged policy
to create institutional and regulatory
framework for speedy and steady
growth of the economy. And at the
centre of all these initiatives is real
estate, which is a key contributor to
GDP. Going forward, these policy
initiatives will help make real estate
and affordable, making the sector
investor and consumer friendly.
