US Transportation History

Population of about 4 million in

intercity passenger
and freight
transportation was the
railroad.
Declined after the
World War II owing to
the competitiveness of
automobile and truck

Transportation in Cities
City transportation began with horse-
drawn carriages on city streets; these
later traveled on steel tracks.
They were succeeded by cable cars,
electric street cars, underground
electrified railroads and bus.

Federal Aid Road Act
The Automobile and Interstate Highways
At the turn of the 20th century, the
automobile was poised to change the face
of transportation in the United States.

Aided by the Interstate Highway System
under the Federal-Aid Highway Act of
1956, the automobile lead to mobility on a
scale formerly unknown, playing a major
role in urban sprawl.

1808 Gallatin Report 1st National Tp. Inventory, suggested

1866 Bicycles introduced to USA
1887 First daily railroad service coat to coast
1956 Federal-Aid Highway Act, $25 billion for the construction
of 42,500 miles of Interstate Highways over a 20-year
period.

1987 Surface Transportation and Uniform Relocation
Assistance Act; allowed states to raise the speed limit to
65 mph on rural Interstate highways.
1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act
(ISTEA); overall intermodal approach to highway and
transit funding.
1998 Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-
21); seven planning factors be included in regional
transportation plans.
2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation
Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU); new core
Highway Safety Improvement Program
MAP-21 (Moving Ahead for
Progress in the 21st Century)
An Act to authorize funds for Federal-aid highways,
highway safety programs, and transit programs, and
for other purposes.
Was signed into law by President Obama on July 6,
2012.
Funding surface transportation programs at over $105
billion for fiscal years (FY) 2013 and 2014.
MAP-21 is the first long-term highway authorization
enacted since 2005.
MAP-21 extends current law (SAFETEA-LU) for the
remainder of FY 2012, with new provisions for FY
2013 and beyond taking effect on October 1, 2012
