WHAT IS GLOBALISATION?
Globalisation is much more than new innovations of
technology, new apps. Globalisation is many things, such as
interacting with other people, groups and companies all
over the world. Its also the process of goods and services
being known, traded and recognised all around the world.
We are surrounded by globalisation including the clothes we
wear, the food we eat, our culture and much more. You may
think that globalisation is a good thing, but most of it is not.
The clothes you are wearing, the famous brands that
everyone loves, do you really know where the products are
made? and in what conditions they are made in? Most TNC
companies use sweatshops, where the people work over
time, are underpaid and work in poor conditions just so the
companies can have extra profit. You may think and wonder
why the companies havent been closed, well the answer is
quite simple, the companies dont get shut down because
everyone is at blame. The company, the boss at the factory
and the people who buy the products. Many people have
been advocating for human rights, which is good thing as
the companies are responding and are/have been making
the working conditions better, but have not shut down the
sweatshops. In sweatshops, most of the people are quite
young, they are in developing countries like: India,
Bangladesh, Vietnam and Indonesia. You may wonder why
these people dont just quit and leave their jobs, well the
answer is they simply cant survive if they dont work in these
harsh conditions, they are exposed to pollution and much
more.

1
GLOBAL
TNCS

Positives:

When you think of TNCS you will most like think of Nike, McDonalds,
Adidas, KFC and many more companies. TNC stands for transnational
corporation meaning that it is a large company and produces and
distributes goods and services worldwide. A TNC usually has its
headquarters in one place and branches all around the world, and has
its factories in developing countries such as countries in Asia. The
positives of TNCs are that there has been an increase of
transportations using the sea, it has influenced people to advocate for
human rights, more sales and job opportunities, good quality products
and it has led to new and more innovations such as technology.

Negatives:

A TNC usually has its factory in developing countries also known as third
world countries because of cheap labour. In these countries, there are
sweatshops where people (mostly young people) work for hours and
hours for less than a dollar a day. They work in harsh conditions and are
abused. The people also living in these developing countries
experience serious pollution that affect their well-being dramatically.

How can we stop this?

Well, one way that we could stop sweatshops is by advocating and

raising awareness. We could do this by creating a website, contacting
the company directly or advocate on social media about how the
company uses sweatshops which is abuse to human rights, and how
they should regulate and fix the poor conditions making them better.

Communication

Positives:

2
Communication is a big part of globalisation. People communicate on
websites and apps using technology e.g. you can talk to your friend on
your phone using a messaging app. This is normal and most people do
this, but have realised that you can message someone that is across
the world from you in a total different country. It is important for you to
talk to your relatives and friends online from a different country not only
that is also important to talk about issues online, e.g. someone may use
a popular app such as twitter to get a message through about a social
issue such as poverty. People can also market and advertise their
products globally online if they have a small company and dont have
enough money or to find more patrons.

Negatives:

There are many problems and issues you can encounter when using
the internet to socialise and entertain yourself without knowing what
you are getting yourself into. You may not even realise that you are
giving out your personal information to people which can be
dangerous as you dont know who you are talking to, their age,
gender, occupation, where they are and much more about them and
they can easily take your information and hack your account and
much more. Another negative about communicating online is cyber
bullying, it said that 25% young people such as teenagers have
experienced cyber bullying online. Cyber bullying is a serious issue such
as suicide. Yearly there are 4,400 approximate deaths caused by
bullying.

How can we stop this?

We can stop this by first knowing who you are talking to. You also
shouldnt be talking to strangers and reducing the amount of time you
spent online and making your online accounts private and not using
your real information if required for a website.

3
INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND TRANSPORTATION

Positive:

International trade is significant topic in globalisation. Its when goods

and resources are exported and imported. E.g. A good is produced in
Australia and is then is sold to someone in the United States. This would
mean that Australia exported and U.S. imported. How are these items
exported and imported? Well we call these the drivers of globalisation-
transport, there are three different types air, land and sea transport. Air
transport has lower costs and has increased people travelling, land
transport has faster travel time and sea transport, including large cargo
ships have increased in size which means more items can be
transported at once.

Negative:
You may be wondering how this is bad, well the reason why it is bad is
because international trade favors the developed countries such as
America rather than developing countries such as countries in Asia.

INDIVIDUAL
4
Food, Transport, Language, Music and clothing.

Globalisation has affected every aspect of our lives, people are

becoming more Americanised. Such as the food we eat, the language
we speak, the music we listen to and the clothes we wear. The way
globalisation affects these factors is you may listen to a song that isnt
in your language or it may have been made in a different country but
you listen to it because its a popular song on internet. The food we
eat, if you think about all the foods that you have eaten most of/all of it
probably comes from a different culture and has originated in a
different country e.g. pasta, originated in Italy. The language you
learn/speak, in school you may be learning a language that isnt
common in your country e.g. you may learn Japanese in Australia. You
may also want to learn a different language like English because it is
the most common language that people speak. Our clothes, we may
buy our clothes online from shops that are not based in Australia.

Positives-

People are becoming more aware of other cultures and are being
introduced to them.

Negatives- People are losing their own culture e.g. instead of listening
to a cultural song from their country they could be listening to a song
that was produced from another country such as America.

Technology

The Internet

5
Positives:
Most people spend most of their day on the internet, if that is either for
entertainment purposes or educational purposes. Although some
people find the internet as a waste of time it can be quite important.
The internet allows you to connect to the world and become more
aware of the world and what is going on. Not only that it also allows
you to connect to your friends and family, it can be educational as
there are many educational websites on the internet, saves a lot of
time such as apps and much more.

Cons:

Even though there are many pros about the internet there are as many
cons. There are a lot of negatives about the internet can be changed
such as, personal privacy, waste of time (depending on what you are
doing), addiction, people becoming too attached to the internet and
preoccupied with the internet. There are also other things such as
autocorrect, not allowing students to learn how to use punctuation
and to learn how to spell and much more.

How can we avoid these negatives?

To avoid these cons, we can first not use our real personal information
of the internet no matter how safe the website is, only using the internet
for educational uses and making sure youre not spending a lot of time
playing games and other apps, getting rid of autocorrect or not always
typing on the computer.

6
NATIONAL
Economically:

The Australian economy has benefited largely in

globalisation. In fact, Australias economy is influenced by
the global economy as it exports its goods and resources to
other countries to earn money. With the money, they earn
they pay for the resources they import. An example of this is
Australia exporting its precious resources such as gold and
coal for them to pay for the imported items like cars and
other expensive items.

Finance and investment:

In terms of investment in Australia, the growth rates are

reliant on the global economy and financially, globalisation
has made it not only easier but also better in terms of growth.
The negatives of this Is that globalisation has affected the
mortgage rates and the cash rate but this is also a positive as
people can borrow money from the bank.

Labour:
Labour has also been affected by globalisation. There has
been a lot more immigrants and migrants coming to
Australia because of the greater labour movement also
because Australias incomes have been remitted have been
increased. This is a positive as Australia is getting a lot more
workers coming from developing countries in Asia which is
improving the quality of the labour force in Australia and the
relationships that Australia has with businesses (outside of

7
Australia) has raised Australias wealth. Another thing is that
the Australian prime minister has started to reduce the
amount of the migrants coming to Australia which is a
negative and has started to only accept people with skills in
professions.

Negatives:

The negatives of Australia not accepting migrants/ not

accepting a lot of migrants is that people living in
developing countries Is that most of them have nowhere to
go.

Technology:

Technology has also impacted Australia as it has improved

communication with other countries as Australia is an
isolated country. Rates of take up by businesses and people
have increased growth as it has improved productivity.
Technology has also changed Australias economy as there
is more capital intensive and it has also become more
service based. The ways technology has improved Australias
communication is there is now 24-hour link ups with other
nations and countries letting Australia be apart of global
business network and has also allowed trading in the
financial markets making it easier for the exported items to
be sold and marketed on the internet. Another way
technology has impacted Australias economy is that it has
impacted in inflation levels and lowering consumer prices

e.g. you may find a toy that you like at a store but It might be
cheaper on amazon or eBay.
