Elon Musk pulled his five kids out their prestigious private school, and launched the
secretive Ad Astra School.
Ad Astra School was created in 2014 by Elon Musk.
There are very few details about the school and no public
website.
Elon Musk hasn't spoken publicly about the school since
2015.

Elon Musk pulled his five kids out their prestigious school for gifted
children school in 2014, and launched the secretive Ad Astra School.
Details about Ad Astra - which means "to the stars" in Latin - are sparse.
Musk gave an interview to Beijing Television in 2015 and spoke about
the school. (http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-creates-a-
grade-school-2015-5)

"There aren't any grades," Musk said, explaining that instead of treating
school like an assembly line "it makes more sense to cater the education
to match their aptitudes and abilities."

Since that 2015 interview, Musk hasn't spoken publicly about Ad Astra,
and families at the school have remained similarly tight-lipped. The
school has no public website, phone number, or reference of the
administrators and teachers who work at the school.

But Peter Diamandis , chairman of the X Prize Foundation

(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_Prize_Foundation) , recently toured
Ad Astra, and shared the ethos of the school. Diamandis' unique access
to Ad Astra is likely due to the fact that Musk sits on the board of
trustees of X Prize.

"One element that is persistent in that small school of 31 kids is the

conversation about ethics and morals, a conversation manifested by
debating real-world scenarios that our kids may one day face,"
Diamandis, wrote for the Huffington Post.

He went on to give an example of a question that teachers posed to

students:
Elon Musk launched a secretive LA This $40,000 super-skinny home can fit 37% of Netflix subscribers say they binge- A relationship psychologi

"Here's an example of the sort of gameplay/roleplay that I heard
about at Ad Astra, that might be implemented in a module on morals
and ethics. Imagine a small town on a lake, in which the majority of
the town is employed by a single factory. But that factory has been
polluting the lake and killing all the life. What do you do? It's posed
that shutting down the factory would mean that everyone loses their
jobs. On the other hand, keeping the factory open means the lake is
destroyed and the lake dies. This kind of regular and routine
conversation/gameplay allows the children to see the world in a
critically important fashion."

This type of moral and ethical reckoning isn't uncommon for Musk, who
talks about the need to think about the ethical ramifications of
advancing technology.
brave-new-world-needs-a-moral-compass/) It seems Ad Astra has these
same types of discussions with its students.

If you are a parent of a student at Ad Astra or know more details

about the school and would like to share, email

The Tikku home. Casagrande Laboratory

Helsinki-based design firm Casagrande Laboratory has

created a super-skinny home that costs $40,000.
The architects hope to build the homes, called Tikkus, on
former parking spaces.
The home are part of a larger trend of cities adding more
space for pedestrians and housing rather than cars.

As more people move to cities (https://theconversation.com/the-

worlds-urban-population-is-growing-so-how-can-cities-plan-for-
migrants-49931) , the housing supply in many urban places is
shrinking. In recent years, urban centers like Manhattan, Austin, and
Nashville have begun to run out of room
(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-05-22/america-s-
cities-are-running-out-of-room) to build more housing - let alone
affordable housing (http://www.businessinsider.com/affordable-
housing-crisis-us-states-expensive-places-to-live-2017-4) - to keep up
with demand.

A Helsinki-based design firm called Casagrande Laboratory believes one

solution is transforming parking spaces into land for housing.

The company has designed a super-skinny home

that measures 8 feet by 16 feet - roughly the footprint of a parking spot,
which the architects consider
(https://www.casagrandelaboratory.com/portfolio/tikku/) a natural
place for the home.
Called the Tikku, the home features three stories: an office, a bedroom,
and a greenhouse on top. Solar panels power the house, which is made
of cross-laminated timber - a type of strong engineered wood that's five
times lighter (https://www.dezeen.com/2017/11/01/worlds-largest-
cross-laminated-timber-tower-dalston-works-waugh-thistleton-regal-
developments-sustainable-london/) than concrete.

Each story is a separate module, and construction involves stacking the

modules on top of each other (a process similar to assembling Legos).
This video shows the process. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=ONUZRJqIJ5g)

The Tikku can be customized for different needs or include more

stories. The firm debuted a prototype at Helsinki Design Week
(http://www.helsinkidesignweek.com/) in Amsterdam in September.

The Tikku home. Casagrande Laboratory

In the future, Casagrande Laboratory would like to build Tikkus on

actual parking spots if cities will allow it, Principal Marco Casagrande
told (https://www.fastcompany.com/40482921/this-three-story-tiny-
house-fits-in-the-footprint-of-a-parking-space) Fast Company. Since
Helsinki Design Week, the architects have already received several
orders for the homes, which cost $40,000 for three stories.

As more people (http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-and-lyft-limit-

personal-car-use-study-2017-8) move from personal cars to rideshare
services like Uber and Lyft, some urban planners have
(http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-car-future-real-estate-
20170405-story.html) speculated
(http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20161105/ISSUE01/311059991/will-
uber-and-driverless-cars-turn-the-parking-biz-into-roadkill) that the
number of parking spaces in cities will decline. Building homes in their
place may be a smart idea.

Netflix

New survey data from Netflix shows that about 37% of

Netflix users binge-watch while at work.
67% of Netflix users watch Netflix outside of their homes.

In a new survey conducted by Netflix (via SurveyMonkey), about 37% of

Netflix's US subscribers said they binge-watched while at work.

The data also revealed that about 67% binge-watch Netflix's shows and
movies outside of their homes, while 60% said they'd increased their
public binge-watching within the last year.

That makes sense considering Netflix began allowing its subscribers to

download shows and movies
(http://variety.com/2016/digital/news/netflix-downloads-offline-
viewing-tv-movies-1201930059/) on the Netflix mobile apps just last
year, giving the option to watch content "offline" instead of using mobile
data.
The ability to more easily watch Netflix's content offline could explain
why subscribers are now binge-watching wherever they go - including
public bathrooms. 12% of US subscribers confessed to watching Netflix
in public restrooms, according to the survey.

A Relationship Psychologist Explains Why Marriage Seems Harder Now Than Ever Before

A relationship psychologist explains why marriage

Eli J. Finkel, a professor at Northwestern University and the author of "

The All-or-Nothing Marriage
(https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/052595516X/ref=as_li_tl?

streaming-sticks-boxes-
20&linkId=62af703d8a1c1ca2abb23015912848d4) ," explains three
different ways you can strengthen your relationship.

Eli Finkel: We have arrived at a moment in history where the best

marriages are better than the best marriages of earlier eras, while at the
same time, the average marriages are getting a little bit worse.
Historians divide marriage in America into three different eras. There's
sort of, from the Colonial Era until about 1850, when we industrialized,
the second era is from about 1850 to 1965 or so, and then we are
currently in this third era.

And the first era was really about helping people achieve their basic,
physiological, survival sorts of needs, things like food production,
clothing, shelter. People preferred to love their spouse, of course, but it
wasn't the reason that you married and certainly, if you didn't love your
spouse, that wasn't a reason to get divorced. The institution was too
sacred, was too important. And so spouses were workmates, rather than
soul mates.

And then if you fast-forward, in the second era, people increasingly

want to marry for personal fulfillment and in particular, they want to
marry for love. And for the first time ever, people start to say things like,
"I'm not going to marry that person because I don't love him or her."
That was a new idea.
And then as we fast-forward to this third era from 1965 to the present,
we see that, these days, we are looking not only for love, and connection
through the marriage, and sexual fulfillment, of course. But also for
these more tricky, complicated sorts of need fulfillment. Needs like self-
actualization, personal growth, and a sense of vitality. And so these
days, for the first time, if you can find yourself in a situation where
you'd say, "Look, he's a loving man and a good father but I'm not going
to live the next 30 years feeling stagnant, feeling like I can't really
grow."

Our expectations for what we want the marriage to provide us have

gotten higher in a lot of ways, more sophisticated in a number of other
ways, more emotional, more psychological, and because of this
additional complexity, more of our marriages are falling short, leaving
us disappointed.

A Member Of Facebook's Founding Team Wants To Sell You A Sports-Free TV Package For $16 A Month

A member of Facebook's founding team wants to sell

you a sports-free TV package for $16 a month

Philo CEO Andrew McCollum Philo

Philo has launched a $16-a-month internet TV package with
programming partners like A+E, AMC, Discovery, Scripps,
and Viacom.
The package cuts out sports, a major source of cost for most
TV packages, but that means it also cuts out the major
broadcast networks.
In the long run, Facebook founding member and Philo CEO
Andrew McCollum wants build a truly "social" TV platform,
though he's not the first to try.

If you love cable TV but don't like sports or CNN, a startup called Philo
has a new internet TV package to sell you for $16 dollars.

Over the last year, a slew of companies - from DirecTV to Hulu to

YouTube - rolled out "over-the-top" TV packages that deliver your
favorite shows over the internet (like Netflix or Hulu). They joined the
first movers in that market, Sling TV and PlayStation Vue. While these
new entrants touted slick interfaces, the packages they delivered were
largely similar to cable TV ones, and at comparable prices in the $30 to
$40 range.

There's a reason for that: most had sports as a central component, and
sports programming is expensive. ( In 2016, ESPN alone cost
(http://www.businessinsider.com/sports-free-tv-bundles-could-kick-
off-soon-2017-4) $6.10 (http://www.businessinsider.com/sports-free-
tv-bundles-could-kick-off-soon-2017-4) in carriage fees per subscriber.)
But then around April of this year
(http://www.businessinsider.com/sports-free-cable-tv-bundles-2017-4)
, we began to hear rumblings in TV land about a package designed to
break from that tradition and cut sports (and therefore the broadcast
networks who rely on sports) out of the equation.

That "entertainment" TV bundle has finally arrived, and it comes from

Philo, a startup that began by providing on-campus programming to
colleges, and whose CEO Andrew McCollum was a founding member of
Facebook.

Philo has strategic investments from five of its programming partners,

totaling $25 million: A+E, AMC, Discovery, Scripps, and Viacom. And
these companies provide the most compelling programming to the
service - from AMC, to The Discovery Channel, to the Food Network, to
Comedy Central, the History Channel, and so on. But the lack of sports
giants means not just programming holes like ESPN, but also news
heavyweights like CNN or Fox News that are owned by companies with
lots of sports rights.

So what's it like to use?

Philo has a snappy interface, robust search functionality, 30-day DVR,

and thoughtful touches (like being able to navigate as easily forward as
backward in time in the guide). It's easy to get the hang of and use.

But the truth is that the primary calculation for consumers is going to
come down to the programming: Is this set of channels worth $16 to
you? If not, it's not going to fundamentally reinvent TV for you.
But Philo does have that ambition.

Philo

Is it time to revisit "social TV?"

The most differentiated piece of McCollum's pitch, which should
perhaps not be surprising considering his past work at Facebook, is that
he wants to build the first real social TV platform.

"TV will be transformed by making it more social," McCollum told

Business Insider. "None of the TV products have any social functionality
built in at all."

For now, that statement applies to Philo as well, since the social
components that McCollum showed me - like being able to see exactly
what spot a friend of yours is at in a TV series, seeing who is actively
watching something, or synchronizing your viewing of an on-demand
show with someone else - will not be available until some time in 2018.
But they look nifty.
"Social TV" might seem like a no-brainer at first. I love to to debate and
discuss the shows I watch with my friends, and you probably do too. But
other companies that have tried to implement features like Philo's have
seen lackluster enthusiasm from customers. In the past, I've had
multiple Netflix executives tell me the company has tested many social
features in the past, but none of them quite popped. Customers just
didn't want them.

Still, with our TV landscape becoming more fractured, and consumption

patterns moving more toward on-demand, I for one would love to have
a way to keep track of what my friends watch. And if there are well-
designed features to help me do things like sync up viewing, so much
the better.

"Your friends and social network are the best recommendation

algorithm in the world," McCollum said. That rings true to me, as I
more often trust my friends than I do even Netflix's much-lauded
algorithms.
But the more pressing question for Philo won't be how much people will
take to its social elements, but rather how big of a market there is for its
sports-free package. Without sports and most news, two of the main
drivers of cable TV, it seems a very niche offering.

But as a matter of professional and personal curiosity, I hope Philo can

get enough traction to really test its social features, which could be
applicable to companies from Netflix to Amazon to Hulu. My TV
viewing is starting to feel a bit more solitary in the binge-heavy age, and
I could use some help to push it back a bit more social.
