Prevention and Management of Diabetes among children

Roman Dhami

My Capstone project is going to be on the topic Diabetes. I chose to do it on this topic because I

am interested in studying health sciences when I graduate high school and start Post Secondary,

and I think it would be an interesting topic to learn about and teach others about this disease.

Diabetes is a disorder of glucose metabolism and if diabetes is not treated correctly, people can

damage parts in their body, especially the heart vessels. This Capstone project will take me a

couple of months to complete. I will have a timeline set, so I keep doing my work on time and I

will be organized with completion dates. I will complete this project with the help of teachers

setting up information booths in our school, to educate students how to prevent diabetes and treat

diabetes. I will also get help from my cousin that is in med school at University of British

Columbia. For my presentation part I am going to do a slide show presentation along with videos

explaining diabetes. Most people dont develop symptoms of diabetes until 1-2 years. Also I

have some knowledge on diabetes because most of my family has diabetes, so I can ask them a

lot of questions about this topic. I have a chance in developing diabetes because my immediate

family has it that means I can be well prepared and have the knowledge in developing diabetes. I

would like to do it on this topic because most people dont know how serious diabetes is and

how fast you can develop this disease. There are a lot of long term effects on diabetes such as,

damage to the large blood vessels of the heart, brain, and legs. Also the small blood vessels can

be damages along with causing problems in your kidneys, feet, and nerves all throughout your

body.
Reason for choosing area of interest?

I chose this this topic for my capstone project because it is an interesting topic to expand
my knowledge on and I want to educate others on this. Also I want to know how many
people in our community are suffering from diabetes and I want to research how many
children know about this disease. Another reason for why I chose this area of interest is
because in the future I want to learn more about health sciences, and I figured this would be a
useful topic for me.

Your prior knowledge on the subject and how it will help you gain new knowledge?

I have some prior knowledge on this topic, because in elementary school I did a small
research project on diabetes. Also a lot of my family members have diabetes, so I know the
basics of it and how this disease is treated each day. After researching about this topic, I will
defiantly become a pro on this topic and gain a lot of new knowledge.

How it will this project make a connection between your academic and career goals?
After I complete this project it will make a connection to my career choice because this
project is based on health and that is what I am planning on studying. Going to Post secondary
will help me reach my career goals, and this project will benefit me on my interests. Not only
will this project help me reach my goals, but this topic will educate myself.

List any other related information that you feel should be included in the proposal?
During this project, I will be setting up booths in the school to educate students and teachers
on this disease and how it can be prevented/ treated. In the community I will research how many
people are likely to get diabetes by genetics and I can also set up an information booth.
