EXPLANATION : WHAT IS
INTERNET PLAGIARISM ?
BY NURUL NADIA

According to Kerr (2012), Internet plagiarism is

generally referred to as content scraping, which is
simply copying and pasting content (text and/or
images) from a source without proper citation.
Students tend to just copy and paste everything from
Internet because it is favourable compared to books,
magazines or journals.
Using Internet is the fastest and simplest way to finish
their works in a short period of time without having
the needs to go to library and find the material
manually through the shelves. It might be quite
difficult for us to detect the plagiarism because of the
accessible on Internet information throughout the net.
However, there are ways that can be used to detect the
plagiarism detection tools. Other than that, we can
easily notice if the writing styles of someone who we
know their level change so sudden. Thus, it is possible
for them to be caught on plagiarizing something
without giving credits.

Agustina & Raharjo (2017) stated that the results of

their research showed that the students were aware of "never lie, never

a set of question. The results are shown below.

students state that they plagiarized

contained in the Internet. The students need to be
aware about the consequences that might trouble them
in future if they keep plagiarizing improperly. Kalani -SOPHOCLES
& Twinwal (2001) stated that since plagiarism may
head them to the very worst effects of their life as
students, few consequences of it include:

1. The student might to redo the project with a

deducted marks.
2. The student may be given a fail grade onward.
3. One further opportunity may be given if found
guilty to resubmit the project within a specified
time.
4. Academic trial and actions may be taken according
to the level of plagiarism and the committee members.
5. Being expelled may seem strict because of the rules,
however it can also be the reason if the student has
been found guilty for many times with plagiarizing.

These actions will completely crush the student and

their academic image and haunt them forever even
when they go for a higher level of education such as
PhD, Masters, job or any other profession. One day, if
they have become a professional in their respective
career, their reputation will be damaged and they
might lose their job.
Therefore, plagiarism should not be taken carelessly.

referring our works from. A citation is needed either it
is in the form of in-text or end-text. However, according
to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary for English
-Wernher Von
Learner, citation is a line or short section taken from Braun
a piece of writing or a speech.

There are few common styles of citation stated by

University of Pittsburgh (2017) : APA (American
Psychological Association) which is used by Education,
Psychology, and Sciences, MLA (Modern Language
Association) used by the Humanities.
Chicago/Turabian style is typically used by Business,
History, and the Fine Arts and IEEE style which used in
Engineering . As students, they mostly use APA style
when citing, however sometimes it depends on their
lecturers or institutions (Brink, 2016).

For an APA styles citation, firstly it must consists of

the author's last name and the work's date of
publication, for example: (James, 2017). Secondly, it
can be a direct quotation which include the page
number in it, for example: (James, 2017, p.30) stated
by Penn State University Libraries (2017).

Example of In-text citation in a paragraph:

A few researchers in the linguistics field have
developed training programs designed to improve
native speakers' ability to understand accented speech
(Derwing, Rossiter, & Munro, 2002; Thomas, 2004).

Their training techniques are based on the

research described above indicating that
comprehension improves with exposure to non- "Certainly the

native speech. Derwing et al. (2002) conducted
their training with students preparing to be social
workers, but note that other professionals who
dealing with the
fallout of it,was
work with non-native speakers could benefit from
a similar program.

Example of end-text or references:

Thomas, H. K. (2004). Training strategies for -Nora Roberts

University of Colorado, Boulder.
Other than that, when doing an in -text
citation, the sentences from the author
must be edited first before write it out. The
sentences need to be paraphrase as long as
the meaning is still the same and put the
quotation when needed only. The sources
also need to be arranged in alphabetical
order in the references part.

PERMISSION:
ASK THE
AUTHOR
AGREEMENT
By Nurul Nadia

Another last way for

students not to commit
plagiarism is by asking
the particular author
permission to use their
artwork. This is easily can
be done just by contacting
them, setting up an
appointment or emailing
them through email. By
using this way, students
can prevent plagiarism
because they ask for the
author agreement first to
use or publish their ideas
to the public.

In conclusion, we should
not take others work or
ideas for granted because
they work very hard on it.
From now on, let us start
doing the right thing. NO
PLAGIARISM anymore!!

MAN AND MAKING IT WORSE IS
PLAGIARISM"
