About this ebook

Bible figures of speech have been around since Adam. Who hasnt heard of the most famous tree, The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil? And in a moment of defiance and rebellion, Cain asked God, Am I my brothers keeper?

These two literary terms can be called figures of speech. They are examples of phrases that bring forth a particular meaning to he who hears them, and they become personal to each of us. What do these two figures of speech have in common?

They were both written down or attributed to the same author, Moses. They both happened somewhere at a specific place, which was an event at a certain moment of time. They represent the divine nature of God and Gods relationship with man, or in literary terms, a character.

While we dont always know the exact location or date, as with the early biblical writings, we do have a unifying anchor which is the Bible figure of speech.

Considering the first Bible figure of speech, we have yet another image: In the beginning. Here we see God acting alone in creation at the beginning of time. It too provides us with a simple truth both unforgettable and personal. It speaks to our mind and our heart and soul as personal knowledge, which is outside of ration and have heaven and earth to bear witness.

This is a Bible figure of speech.

Aaron Schroeder

Aaron Schroeder grew up hearing the Bible Figures of Speech every day as a child. The elders of his life who were from the Victorian era used them often. When that generation was no longer, the hearing of the terms was no longer…until he started reading the Bible and found them again…

T his book is the product of the pursuit of an idea. As a child growing up, I heard figures of speech all the time. The use of some terms just sort of disappeared as the years went by and were forgotten about while some new ones emerged. Oh my God… As the years went by I found more and more of them located right there in the B ible:

I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. John 16:25

This statement became the basis and premise for the idea that Bible Figures of Speech have been around since Jesus’ life and before. They were acknowledged in those days when he used them. Therefore, we see that this is a study that is quite old and is found with earlier biblical writings. The difference between speaking figuratively and speaking plainly is the key… Looking deeper we see more evidence:

Yahweh came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forward. He said, Now hear my words. If there is a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so. He is faithful in all my house. With him, I will speak mouth to mouth, even plainly, and not in riddles; and he shall see Yahweh’s form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses? Numbers 12:5-8

Since the Figures of Speech that Jesus spoke were originally written in Greek it is easy to see why almost all the words classifying them would also be words stemming from the Greek, many being obscure, obsolete, and even impossible to pronounce. Some of the more popular still endure, however; words such as euphemism, hyperbole, irony, and oxymoron, to name a few. Metaphor, proverb and parable are probably the most well known types.

When the Bible was translated into Latin by Jerome, it appears likely that this study of figurative language in Greek word typology became left behind in the old language. At the time the Latin language emerged as the favored Biblical language, the Socratic method had been around for around 800 years and the Greek Bible had evolved into a tool of false doctrines which gave rise to the Gnostics and the merging of scripture and mythology. The Greek language eventually fell out of favor with the emergence of the Catholic Church as the dominant force and the Latin vulgate became the Bible of choice.

Then we see that with the birthing of the Renaissance movement, and the translating of the old Greek writings into the English language and others, there came a new found enthusiasm to the Bible. It appears that the study of these figures of speech became renewed, and an abundance of authors and theologians emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, contributing to a collective body of work which became too much for most of us to process intellectually, as these scholars were fluent in Greek, Hebrew, Chaldee as well as their native western European tongues where they would also be well studied in linguistics and grammar.

What makes certain words and phrases so memorable? When something is repeated in the Old Testament and mentioned twice, according to the Hebrew tradition, it has special significance. Therefore, the various types of repetitions are all noteworthy. Repetition is one of the most common types of figurative writing and repetition gives rise to dozens of Greek classifications and their various linguistic forms.

The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel: to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man: that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel: to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise. Proverbs 1:1-6

Some of the Old Testament writing forms are in poetic and song form, as with some of the songs and the Psalms, as well as the book of Job. These writings have memorable syntax and cadence, all musical characteristics which may make these writings easier to remember in an oral tradition which is handed down by way of memory and recital from generation to generation. These types of figures have characteristics similar to modern music in that the verses, and rhythms make the songs memorable. It is the idea to study Bible Figures of Speech as a literary work and spiritual pursuit in hopes to grasp meaning previously hidden or obscured without the help of those who have committed their lives to pursuit of paths which are lit through countless hours of ponderance and research, often times with no immediate answers.

Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, Son of man, tell a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel; and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: A great eagle with great wings and long feathers, full of feathers, which had various colors, came to Lebanon, and took the top of the cedar: he cropped off the topmost of the young twigs of it, and carried it to a land of traffic; he set it in a city of merchants. Ezekiel 17:1-4

The Bible version used here is known as the World English Bible. This is basically the American Standard Version with the names of God translated closer to their true Hebrew meaning which help us to understand the names of God as actually revealed. Occasionally there is a phrase we grew up hearing which only has meaning in a particular translation version and thus, when found, that Figure of Speech is noted in that version such as with King James Version or Young’s Literal Translation.

Another thing the reader will find is that in this book, Bible Figures of Speech, the verse numbers have been removed as well as all footnotes. This process of uncluttering the passage is for the purpose of seeing the Bible as a work of literature and in so doing, not dissecting its structure verse by verse which is sometimes a distraction and causes the reader to take an unnecessary pause, and thus, lose some meaning or idea that the author never intended. These verses have been carefully cited, however at the end of the passage where other notes may be given as to meaning or systematic collections.

Some passages have also been combined, either from one chapter to the next or omissions made which were literary pauses which are distracting to the point being made. These passages will show the completion of a passage with the Book, chapter and verse referenced right in the middle of a passage.

Upon completion of this book, it became clear that the body of work contained herein represents a language unto itself, and can be used to speak with others who may also know these terms. This book is a collection of words, terms, and phrases which represent a heavenly language, perhaps, by which we understand the workings of heavenly events, places, phenomena and what is in store for us in the future.

The categories in the following table of contents represents a collection of systematic approaches towards studying these terms and phrases. The ultimate goal is to understand what the Bible says. Whether looking for basic comfort through knowledge, or studying parallel passages, or perhaps repetitions, we see there are many ways to approach the Bible systematically. We can look at miracles, we can look at the study of numbers, and their significance, we can look at some of the great stories of all time and the learning lessons they represent.

Some of the other categories which are noteworthy and not presented in the following table of contents can be found by searching for them in the book alphabetically. One of the noteworthy ones is Every creeping thing that creeps. It is found four times: 3 times in Genesis and finally in Ezekiel. This appears to parallel the Bible story of the Christians which includes the New Testament, only these passages are Old Testament only.

A couple other locations of noteworthiness are I am and Yahweh. These show to some extent the attributes of Jesus and God. Then there are Blessing and Song which are self explanatory with numerous entries. Given and Forgive hold a large body of knowledge and are categorized to be found in those locations. There are others as well which a reader may find if reading the alphabetical glossary of terms in the back of the book.

This book has been used as a manual to be present during group Bible study or to facilitate effective preaching, where the book glossary in the back gives a quick view and summary of what is found in the chapters of the book being studied and provides a liberal movement through and around the Bible quickly by simply glancing at the list of terms book by book and chapter by chapter.

May this book be a blessing to you the reader and assist you with some wonderful discoveries: to open your eyes to things previously unseen; your ears to things unheard before; understanding of heart which comes to those who dwell with those writers of the Bible who wrote these words and others:

The Lord Yahweh’s Spirit is on me; because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be glorified. Aaronic blessing: Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is how you shall bless the children of Israel.’ You shall tell them, ‘Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’ Numbers 6:23-26

Aaron’s rod blossom: Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, and take rods from them, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod. You shall write Aaron’s name on the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers’ houses. You shall lay them up in the Tent of Meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you. It shall happen, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud. I will make the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you, cease from me. Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods. Aaron’s rod was among their rods. Moses laid up the rods before Yahweh in the tent of the testimony. On the next day, Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, Aaron’s rod for the house of Levi had sprouted, budded, produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds. Numbers 17:1-8 (Old Testament Miracle # 22)
