Job Study Purpose Assist the Customer in assessing the performance of the Caterpillar
5130 Mass Excavator. Determine 5130 ME cycle times, bucket
payloads, and production loading 150 ton (135 t) trucks.

Date February 2, 1995

Location Open Pit Coal Mine - Western US

Material Sedimentary Clay

2900 lbs/LCY (1.7 t/LCM)

Field Data Toby Welch - Caterpillar Demo-Operator

Summary The 5130 Mass Excavator was working in overburden material

with an approximate density of 2900 lbs/LCY (1.7 t/LCM). The
5130 top loaded 150 ton trucks through the gate from a 10 ft to
12 ft (3.0 m-3.7 m) bench. The 5130 was timed as the trucks were
loaded, the trucks were then weighed on Caterpillar scales which
were set up in the dump area. The 5130 ME loaded the trucks in
7 passes in 2.65 minutes. Average truck payload was 140 tons (127 t).
Average production for the 5130 truck system was 2,509 tons/
60 min hr (2276 tonnes/60 min hr).

Job Description The Job Study was conducted at an open pit coal mine in the
western United States. The mine has a strip ratio of 5:1 and
produces approximately 1.5 million tons (1.36 million tonnes) of
coal per year.

The coal seams at this mine dip at approximately 18 degrees.

During the study the 5130 was being used to remove overburden
between the dipping coal seam and a highwall at the edge of the pit
(see Illustration). The 5130 ME was loading the shot overburden
material from on top of a 10 ft (3.0 m) to 12 ft (3.7 m) bench into
150 ton (135 tonne) trucks, two Caterpillar 785s and one Euclid
R150. The load area was tight allowing only one truck to be in the
load area at a time. The trucks had to be backed up to the backhoe
and loaded through the rear of the body. The 5130 generally worked
within 45 degrees to the left and right of the positioned truck.

A Caterpillar D10N was used to clean the load area floor when
required.

Study Procedure
The Caterpillar scales were positioned in the dump area. Two
empty weights were taken for each truck to determine a good
average empty weight.

All segments of the load cycle were timed so that each could be
evaluated as part of the total load cycle.

4
The following table contains a summary of the results from the Production
study. Only 7 pass load cycles and weights were used in the
following analysis as this was typical for this operation.

Due to the lack of space in the load area, truck exchange times
were higher than normal. A standard truck exchange time of
0.7 minutes was used.

Discussion of Results Considering the operator did not have much experience on the
5130, it performed at or above expected production levels. The
high production rate of 2509 tons/hr (2276 tonnes/hr) is a direct
result of the 5130s fast cycle times and consistent bucket fill factors.

Although the 5130 is primarily designed to load 95 ton (86 tonne)

trucks, it performed well loading the larger 150 ton trucks. It may
be noted that the 5130 was at its reach limit loading trucks through
the gate, and that when loading it was important to get the trucks as
close to the bank as possible to allow an evenly distributed load in
the truck. Particular care must be taken to make sure the floor is
clean for the trucks backing in to be loaded. At this site a D10N
kept the floor very clean for the trucks.

6
The 5130 cycled quickly with a total cycle time of 0.43 min or
25.8 sec. The longest portion of the load cycle (35.4%) was spent
loading the bucket. Swing loaded times were very fast comprising
only 25% of the total load cycle.

Bucket fill factors were good for this material at 106%. The
5130 consistently achieved or exceeded its rated bucket payload of
19 tons (17 tonnes) with an overall bucket payload per pass of
20 tons (18 tonnes).
