Rules for determinants:

A, B and C are nn matrices

D1: If A has a row of 0's then det A = 0.

D2: If B is obtained from A by multiplying one row by k then det A = det B .
D3: If B is obtained from A by interchanging two rows then det A = det B .
D4 If A has two identical rows then det A = 0.
D5: If A has one row that is a multiple of another then det A = 0.
D6: IfA, B and C dier only in one row (row k, say) and Rowk (C) = Rowk (A)+Rowk (B)
then det C = det A + det B . [Here Rowk (A) indicates row k of matrix A.]

D7: If B is obtained from A by adding a multiple of one row to another unchanged

row then det B = det A.
D8: det(AT ) = det A.
D9: Any result above remains true if the word row is replaced by the word col-
umn.
