E. Inspecting the structural steel will be performed in the mill, shop and field
but such inspections or tests shall not relieve the Contractor of his
responsibility to furnish satisfactory materials. The Engineer shall have the
right to inspect and reject faulty materials or workmanship at any time prior

each defect. Cost of repairing and retesting of defective welds shall be
born by the Contractor.
2. Initially, welds requiring ultrasonic testing shall be tested at the rate of
100% in order to establish qualifications of each individual welder. If
rejectable defects occur in less than 5% of the welds tested, the
frequency of testing may be reduced to 25%. If the rate of rejectable
defects increases to 5% or more, 100% testing shall be reestablished
until the rate is reduce to less than 5%. Percentage shall be calculated
for each welder independently.
3. When ultrasonic indications arising from the weld root can be
interpreted as either a weld defect or the backing strip, the backing
strip shall be removed at the expense of the Contractor, and if no root
defect is visible, weld shall be re-tested. If no defect is indicated on
this retest and no significant amount of the base and weld metal have
been removed, the joint need no further repair or welding. If a defect
is indicated, it shall be repaired at no expense to the Owner.

WIRATMAN & ASSOCIATES

1.0 Technical Specification Structural Steel - 6
4. Questionable root indications that prove not to be defects shall not
count against the welder to increase test rate.

3. Detection of Laminations : Rejectable defects discovered by ultrasonic
means are defined as follows : Using suitable calibrated ultrasonic
equipment, any recordable discontinuity causing complete loss of back
reflection and which cannot be encompassed within a 7.5 cm diameter
circle is unacceptable (Level II Standard of Acceptance).

J. Retesting of Welds and Laminations in Field : Approximately 25 percent of

girder to column moment connections shall be retested in the field. These
connections shall be retested after the welds area approximately 30 days
old. Similarly, recheck column material for laminar tearing.

with other trades. Assume all risks in connection with performance of
this work.
2. Damaged Members : During erection, straighten or replace members,
which are bent, twisted or damaged, as directed. If heating is required
in straightening, perform such heating by methods which will insure
uniform temperature throughout entire member. Remove members,
which in the opinion of the Engineer are damaged to such an extent
impairing their appearance, strength or serviceability and replace with
new members.
3. Tolerance for Erection : Structural steel work, erection tolerances shall
be in accordance with the latest edition of the "AISC Specification for
