3.1 Problem Statement/ Issues

The aim of this project is to present a working prototype of a power bank charger whose
power source is a standard power bank charger dynamo. The demographic for this
product is the touring cyclist, who may spend weeks to months travel on the road, with
potentially no access to electricity. Other demographics of travel riders, such as
commuting cyclists, may have use for this product but the design is tailored to the touring
cyclist. Current smart phones offer a variety of utilities to cyclists, including GPS, maps,
bicycling apps which display speedometer, odometer, etc, phone, camera and video, these
utilities are of value to the cyclist, but of course only if the phone remains charged. Since
this project must result in an actual consumer product and not just a proof of concept,
certain design considerations as well as ergonomic and economic factors play important
roles in the development of the power bank charger. A few products are currently on the
market and are designed to power portable electronic devices, smart phones included
however they all exhibit certain limitations, which this design overcomes. The existing
products are bulky, they have an excessive amount of cables, and some of them cannot
charge devices at speeds under 10 MPH. The overall theme for this design is a product
which is ergonomic and simple to use, is able to charge the smart phone at speeds under
10 MPH, and is priced comparably with the existing products on the market. The design
consists of a weather-proof case which houses the power bank and charging electronics,
with a single cable that connects to the dynamo hub. Since the dimensions and charging
requirements of smart phones vary from model to model, this project is designed
specifically for the Apple iPhone5 due to its popularity, all other smart phone models are
outside the scope of this project.
3.2 Methodology: Data Collection (Who, Where, When, How)

In this survey, we are using quantitative and the method that we used is a survey at online
Google form. We make a questionnaire that consist of seven questions and distributed it.
We distributed the questionnaire online using Google form. We distributed the online
Google form to our classmates and fellow friends. The respondents need to answer the
question online. We gathered our questionnaire via Google form as Google form will
give us result from the answers.

Our survey form consists of seven questions that has a various types that are gender,
age,yes or no or maybe, suggestions questions.

Our expectation is to gain 40 responses but we only received 33 responses. Our

respondents include male and female from our university. We did restrict only
respondents from our university only, UiTM Permatang Pauh, Pulau Pinang, did not to
the other universities as well. However, it fulfills the regulation to receive around 33
responses. There are 33.3 female responses whereas only 66.7 male responses. So the
result, female more interested our product.

Next, the age range is majority in the 18-25 years old is 81.8 percent, 26-37 is 9.1 percent
whereas there are from 15 years old to 17 years old and others. We think that this is
because the younger ones are more likely to spend more time over the sports activities
such as hiking, backpacking, traveler.

3.3 Limitation

The limitation of this survey is only to the areas inside of UiTM Permatang Pauh, Pulau
Pinang. The respondents focus is only concentrate in Civil Engineering Faculty. The
perception of the undergraduate is only limited to the Civil Engineering undergraduate
student only.
NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

4.1 Definition

New product development is defined as the process by which entrepreneur designs and creates
new product or service that will be sold to customers. Process of developing a new product or
service development is considered the preliminary step in product or service development and
involves a number of steps that must be completed before the product can be introduced in
market. New product development may be done to develop an item to compete with a particular
product may be done to improve an already establish product. New product development is
essential to any business that must keep up with market trends. Product development, also called
new product management, is a series of steps that includes the conceptualization, design,
development and marketing of newly created or newly rebranded goods or services. The
objective of product development is to cultivate, maintain and increase a company's market share
by satisfying a consumer demand. Not every product will appeal to every customer
or client base, so defining the target market for a product is a critical component that must take
place early in the product development process. Quantitative market research should be
conducted at all phases of the design process, including before the product or service is
conceived, while the product is being designed and after the product has been launched.

The Importance of New Product Development

For Survival
Introduction of new product provides a platform for the company to
compete
Companies that are able to develop and introduce new and improved
products will have a distinct advantage to compete
Competition has become more intense as technological products
become more complex and the technological product life-cycle
getting shorter
Companies face threat of losing market share when competitors come
up with their new products
Thus company have to come up with new products to ensure survival

Strategy for growth

Development of new products can ensure business to grow by:
1. Introducing new products to existing markets
2. Introducing new products to new markets
4.2 Classification of New Product Development

A new category product is when a company diversified his product range into a
product area which it has never operated before. There is nothing new about these
types of products to the market; they are only new to the company. A simple
example here could be Pineng power bank. As we know, Pineng is primarily a
power bank manufacturer throughout the world. Lets assume that they decide to
diversify into torchlight. Then these types of new products would be a new
category entry for Pineng. The easiest way to think about a product category is to
look at a supermarket, shopping mall which normally has signage for different
types of products, such as Yoobao, Asus, Remax, Infinix. These different types of
products are all considered to be different product categories. There have 6
classification of new product development by company. Firstly, new-to-the-world
products. These types of new products create an entirely new market. For example,
introduction of products like laptops and palmtops has created a new market of
mobile computing. Secondly, new product lines. New products may allow a
company to enter an established market for the first time. Asus has developed flat
computer to target a new segment of already crowded pc market. Thirdly, additions
to existing product lines which new products can supplement a companys
established product lines. For instance, Remax introduced power band for
consumers. Lastly, Improvements and revisions of existing products which are
Microsoft replaced its MS-DOS by Windows as an improved, user-friendly GUI
(Graphical User Interface) based operating system. They also updated Windows
regularly and launched the versions of Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP. Then, cost
reductions which new products may be developed that provide similar performance
at lower cost. The mobile service providers like Airtel, Hutch and Reliance India
Mobile are introducing new post-paid schemes with low rental and outgoing
facility.
