NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
4.1 Definition
New product development is defined as the process by which entrepreneur designs and creates
new product or service that will be sold to customers. Process of developing a new product or
service development is considered the preliminary step in product or service development and
involves a number of steps that must be completed before the product can be introduced in
market. New product development may be done to develop an item to compete with a particular
product may be done to improve an already establish product. New product development is
essential to any business that must keep up with market trends. Product development, also called
new product management, is a series of steps that includes the conceptualization, design,
development and marketing of newly created or newly rebranded goods or services. The
objective of product development is to cultivate, maintain and increase a company's market share
by satisfying a consumer demand. Not every product will appeal to every customer
or client base, so defining the target market for a product is a critical component that must take
place early in the product development process. Quantitative market research should be
conducted at all phases of the design process, including before the product or service is
conceived, while the product is being designed and after the product has been launched.
A new category product is when a company diversified his product range into a
product area which it has never operated before. There is nothing new about these
types of products to the market; they are only new to the company. A simple
example here could be Pineng power bank. As we know, Pineng is primarily a
power bank manufacturer throughout the world. Lets assume that they decide to
diversify into torchlight. Then these types of new products would be a new
category entry for Pineng. The easiest way to think about a product category is to
look at a supermarket, shopping mall which normally has signage for different
types of products, such as Yoobao, Asus, Remax, Infinix. These different types of
products are all considered to be different product categories. There have 6
classification of new product development by company. Firstly, new-to-the-world
products. These types of new products create an entirely new market. For example,
introduction of products like laptops and palmtops has created a new market of
mobile computing. Secondly, new product lines. New products may allow a
company to enter an established market for the first time. Asus has developed flat
computer to target a new segment of already crowded pc market. Thirdly, additions
to existing product lines which new products can supplement a companys
established product lines. For instance, Remax introduced power band for
consumers. Lastly, Improvements and revisions of existing products which are
Microsoft replaced its MS-DOS by Windows as an improved, user-friendly GUI
(Graphical User Interface) based operating system. They also updated Windows
regularly and launched the versions of Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP. Then, cost
reductions which new products may be developed that provide similar performance
at lower cost. The mobile service providers like Airtel, Hutch and Reliance India
Mobile are introducing new post-paid schemes with low rental and outgoing
facility.
