Curriculum Experience Plan

Name: Jackie Henriquez

Activity/Experience Name: Math Flannel Counting- 10/25/2017

INTENTIONS FOR LEARNING

Goal(s): Describe the general or long-term developmental focus of this experience.
List the California Preschool Learning Foundation(s) or California Infant/Toddler Learning
and Development Foundation(s) here:
This experience is planned to support the development of language, literacy and mathematics.
This experience will introduce children to the language of mathematics. Children may use and
apply numerical concepts.

Objectives: What specific and observable concepts or skills will the child learn, explore, or
discover? The child will be able to List the Preschool DRDP Measure(s) or Infant/Toddler
DRDP measure(s) here:

TCWBAT count objects (number of cars decreasing and increasing).

TCWBAT to show developing understanding of number and quantity.

TCWBAT show increasing ability to add and subtract small quantities of objects.

EXPERIENCE PLAN
Activity Description:
Children will sit at circle time and follow along with a song to the tune of 5 Little Ducks. The
Math flannel will feature 5 types of cars that children see in their community and they will count
down as each car drives away and children will make the sound that each car makes.

Invitational Set-up: How will the experience be presented to invite participation or provoke
interest? (Provide a photograph of the set-up).

The plan: The flannel will be displayed at group time on the flannel board. I will ask children
when theyve seen these vehicles in their community.

What actually happened: I asked the children if they were familiar with the song, 5 Little Ducks
and they said they were. I told them that we would do a new song that was similar to that, but
with cars.

*Please photograph or video-record this experience and collect anecdotal notes.

Specific vocabulary, teaching strategies, and open-ended questions you will keep in mind
(Using your textbook and/or Curriculum Frameworks, list specific ways you will promote
problem-solving and critical thinking beyond a simple recall of facts):

Vocabulary: Ambulance, Firetruck, Tow Truck, School Bus and Police Car.

Open-Ended Questions: Have you seen a tow truck? Do you know what the tow truck does?
What vehicles have you seen in your community?

Problem Solving/Critical Thinking: Using the cars to do simple math problems (2 cars and 1 car
make 3 cars).

How is this experience personalized (i.e. modified) to meet the varying developmental and
individual needs of the children in your class? (e.g., older children, younger children,
specific needs or interests?)

This activity has been modified to meet the needs of the community. I did not include a yellow
taxi in the counting since there are not yellow cabs in our community.

The number of cars can be extended and more math problems can be included.

Specific materials needed that are not already accessible to children:

Flannel Cars to use on Flannel board

Street flannel for cars to be on top of.

REFLECTION/EVALUATION

What did you do well?

The children enjoyed talking about the different cars that I had presented to them. The children
sat quietly and listened well.

How did the children respond to the experience presented? (Describe your observations
of childrens words and actions) What worked? What was difficult? Were there any
surprises?
The children were not as interested as I thought in the song or the cars. After talking with my
mentor teacher, she suggested that the song wasnt repetitive enough because the type of car
changed, the noise the car made changed and wasnt as catchy as 5 Little Ducks. She
suggested using one type of car and maybe to label the car with a number.

I left out the flannel and two children were interested in playing, but they were engaged for maybe
5 minutes after I left it out.

What additions or changes would you make if you were to do this activity again? What did
the children teach you (e.g. about curriculum, teaching, or children)?

I am going to do this activity again, but will have the same type of car and label it with a number
(1-5) and also just sing, 5 little cars went out one day.

I would have also thought of a way to dismiss the children from the group. When I had originally
presented the idea I did not have a dismissal for the children and my mentor teacher dismissed
the children.
