1. What is Ethernet?

What is Ethernet?
Ethernet is the most widespread LAN standard, of which 10BASE-T and
100BASE-TX are the mainstream. A star network, LAN 10BASE-T uses
a twist-pair cable (STP/UTP cable) and has a communication speed of
10Mbit/s and a cable with maximum length of 100 m. 100BASE-TX is
even faster than 100Mbit/s. 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX are compatible
with a large amount of equipment and support mixed environment.
Even a Gigabit Ethernet, which uses optical fibre cable to realise
communication speed of 1Gbit/s, has appeared recently.

Reasons behind the widespread use of Ethernet for intranet

LAN (Ethernet) is already included as a standard feature for business Printer Server
machines such as PCs and printers. Besides Ethernet, USB can be used
to connect to external devices; however, to connect multiple PCs and
printers and file servers, star network using a hub is more convenient
and is widely used in most offices.

What are the differences between Ethernet and other networking

technology?

2. What is the Relationship between Etheernet and FA?

How popular is Ethernet in the FA industry?

Conventionally, communication technology under FA environment generally meant a one-to-one communication such as
PLC & a touch panel and PLC & a measuring instrument. A typical example is RS-232C serial communication. However,
increasing demand for traceability management and growing equipment size called for the introduction of LAN environment
which enables management/control/data acquisition of multiple lines. As a result, users of Ethernet are increasing in the FA
industry for its high usability and communication speed.
Responding to the increasing demand for Ethernet environment, we have introduced PLC KV-5000, which include Ethernet
port in the CPU as a standard feature. This made the Ethernet environment, which used to be expensive, to be more
affordable.

RS-232C (Serial) was the mainstream Ethernet has become widely used
Multiple connection is possible
One-to-one communication is the mainstream High speed communication is possible
Why? Many ports, affordable Why? Appearance of standard port (lower costs)
Reliability Improved reliability (performance, environment
resistance)

Basic knowledge of Ethernet

The following explains the basic configurations when connecting KV-5000 Series to Ethernet.
It is basically the same items as those configured when connecting PCs to intranet (i.e. IP address, sub-net mask, etc).
Check with the system administrator when connecting KV-5000 Series to the intranet.

Basic knowledge of Ethernet terminology

Default Gateway refers to a node that performs routing when transferring data from own LAN to
Default Gateway
other LANs.

Keep Alive refers to a function that investigates regularly at a fixed interval whether the
Keep Alive connection is maintained normally with devices with which the connection has established while
using TCP communication.

TCP refers to a network protocol that establishes a connection to the other devices. TCP has
TCP capabilities to control responses and orders by using the sequence number and avoid duplicate
and missing data. Compared to UDP, it is more reliable protocol in general.

4. Basiic Knowledge of Ethernet Confiiguration

Basic knowledge of Ethernet configuration: IP address

IP address is a 32bit identification number assigned to each device in the network. Communications via TCP/IP sends data
based on this address.
IP address constitutes of two parts: network address and host address. Network address represents a whole network to
which the device belongs. A host address is allocated to each device in this network.

32 bit

Router
IP address
Network address Host address
Hub

Indicates network

Indicates a unique terminal

Host 1 Host 2 Host 3 Host 4

* IP address is partitioned into 4, each contains 8 bit, separated by ., and expressed by numbers from 0 to 255 (decimal
base).

Basic knowledge of Ethernet configuration: Subnet mask

Subnet mask is used to separate network address part and host address part. Like IP address, subnet mask is 32bit
numbers separated into 4 by . (e.g. 255.255.255.0). Network and IP address can be figured out from multiplying subnet
mask by IP address expressed in binary digit.

EXAMPLE Applying 255.255.255.0 to 165.123.2.1 and 165.123.10.1 yields 165.123.2.0 and

165.123.10.0 respectively. That is they belong to different networks.

165.123.2.1 = 10100101 01111011 00000010 00000001

255.255.255.0 = 11111111 11111111 11111111 00000000
10100101 01111011 00000010 00000000 = 165.123.2.0
165.123.10.1 = 10100101 01111011 00001010 00000001
255.255.255.0 = 11111111 11111111 11111111 00000000
10100101 01111011 00001010 00000000 = 165.123.10.0
