Periodic Table Book Assignment

As you have seen in Unit I, chemistry is very important to life on the planet, and occurs in
countless ways on a daily basis. In this assignment, you will be given the choice to choose a
element on the Periodic Table that appeals to you, and write a short 1-page paper about the
element that you choose. The 1-page paper should include the following:

Background (where was it discovered, who discovered, etc)

Practical Uses (industry, college, home, etc)
Interesting facts (things that stick out to you! Be creative!!)
Two pictures (elemental periodic block, another either in practical or simple state)
Atomic Structure
o Electron Configuration
o Atomic Number
o Atomic Symbol
o # of neutrons (stable form)
o # of protons
o # of electrons
o Known Isotopes
o Known oxidation states (i.e. charges)
Grammar and punctuation / References
Once you have completed and turned in each of your pages, they will be combined together as a Periodic
Book of Elements that we will display in class and the science department!! Hint: it may be a useful tool for
future units in Pre-AP Chem too!
For the references used in this paper, you will be responsible to format your references into ACS
(American Chemical Society) format. I will have a document that illustrates this format on Schoology, and we
will go over the format in class in the upcoming days. If you have further questions about formatting, come
see Mr. H. There will also be an example of the Periodic Book in the back of the classroom at all times for you
to look at to get an idea of what we are expecting. If you are up for the challenge, I encourage you to look up 1
chemistry journal article that includes the use of your choice elements, and use the information for either your
Practical Uses or Interesting Facts Section.
Note: I encourage you to start on this early as possible, so that you are not overwhelmed with studying
for the Unit test and researching for the paper all at the same time!!!
This assignment will be out of 75 points, where there are a total of 5 points for each section of the final
paper and 15 points for a rough draft. When you turn in your final paper, you will staple your rough draft to it
upon turn in. If Mr. H makes suggestions on the rough draft, please use those suggestions on your final paper.
PLEASE COME SEE MR. H IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR WANT A LOOK OVER OF YOUR PAPERS BEFORE YOU
TURN THEM IN!!!!

Strontium
Mr. H
Sr
Pre-AP Chem, Period 2 87.62
Background:
In 1789, strontium was discovered and named after a village in Scotland called Strontian by English
scientist Dr. Adair Crawford.1 Strontium is a relatively active, silvery-white, soft metal, which will easily tarnish
when exposed to air; however, if strontium is finely cut, it can burn spontaneously when exposed to air.1 As a
mineral ore, celestite is a form of strontium sulfate, while strontianite is a form of strontium carbonate. To
obtain strontium from these ores, the ores are treated with hydrochloric acid, thus allowing the strontium
compounds to form strontium chloride; upon becoming this salt, strontium chloride is extracted and strontium
is separated from chloride by means of electrolysis.1
Atomic structure:
The basic atomic structure of a stable strontium atom contains 38 protons, 38 electrons, and 50
neutrons. The electrons are configured into their s, p, and d orbitals in the following manner:
1s22s22p63s23p64s23d104p64s2
Strontium has been known to have two stable isotopes: strontium-90 (half-life: 28.8 years) and strontium-97
(half-life: 2.8 hours).1 For oxidation states, strontium has been characterized to only have one exclusive
oxidation states of +2.1
Practical Uses and Interesting Facts:
Due to the small half-life of strontium-97, this isotope has been used to further medical research in
creating implants to promote controlled bone regeneration through osseointegration. Recently in 2016, Cao et
al. found that titanium host bone implants coated with Sr2+ by MAO (Micro-Arc Oxidation) to create SrTiO3
surface coats would promote further osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation and growth in canines.2 Due to
Sr2+ acting as a calcium sensing acceptor (CaR), Sr2+ directs mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) to commit to bone
linkages in the absence of Ca2+ found at bone marrow stem cell (BMSC) sties.2-3 During the same time of the
research by Cao et al., Chang et al. explored the effects of Sr in osteogenic differentiation of male New
Zealand white rabbits by creating Ti6Al4V Sr-coated nanotubing arrays (NTSr600 and NTSr800) using electron
beam melting (EBM) and the release of Sr2+ in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was measured by induced
coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) over a span of 30 days as seen in Figure 1.3 Chang et
al. also reported that the incorporation of Sr2+ as a CaR would promote osteogenic differentiation at BMSC
sites both in vitro and in vivo.3 Further exploration of Sr induced bone regeneration in humans is currently
being explored and, with hope, could l ead to cures for prominent diseases such as osteoporosis.
