ECH 3116 MASS AND HEAT TRANSFER

Semester 1 2017-2018
Mini Project
Heat transfer is a physical phenomenon which occurs in all situations where a temperature
difference exists. It can be observed in micro-scale and in the scale of the universe, in the
performance of complex technological systems and in the simple home equipment, it can be
harmful and it can be utilized. Heat transfer is everywhere: find it and study it. Choose a problem
where heat transfer plays a significant role (interesting for you, or which has a practical interest,
or where interesting heat transfer methods can be applied), investigate it and share your
knowledge.

Project reporting ( due Week 13)

The time frame of the project is 4 weeks. The weekly project progress should be reported using a
blog/or other suitable social media. The report should be in a form: - writing, drawing, animation, or
video. Students are encourage to give their comments and suggestion to other groups project. A
bonus mark will be given to students who gave valuable comments to their peers.
Total marks : 15 ( 10 % report & 5 % reflection session)

The report should address:

1. Title, names (possibly team photo).
2. Introduction description of the problem and the objectives.
3. Heat transfer problem setup. (show the drawing)
4. Solution and procedure.
5. Clear presentation and discussion of the results (may include demonstration and
prototype during presentation).
6. Conclusions and recommendations.
7. Appendix (references, properties, derivation of equations, details of solution, photos,
acknowledgments, etc.).
ECH 3116 MASS AND HEAT TRANSFER
Semester 1 2017-2018

List of topics
1. Find any interesting heat transfer problem in a movie or literature and investigate it.
2. Investigate heat transfer problems of any cooking process. Demonstrate your results in
class.
3. Investigate the rating of car cooling radiator 1
4. Investigate the failures of the car cooling radiators scale, pitting & corrosion
5. Choose 3 different type (brand) of pan and study the heat conduction through the bottom
of a pan in different heat transfer regimes. Proposed the best pan for cooking.
6. Compare the performance of normal iron with steam iron. Can you verify the claim that
steam iron save more energy?
7. Compare the heat transfer in conventional and microwave ovens.
8. Refrigeration and freezing of foods.
9. Consider a finned heat exchanger. Qualitatively discuss the effect that the thermal
conductivity of the fins have on the heat transfer rate of the exchanger. Also discuss the
effect of the heat capacity of the fin material.
10. Describe the hazards, risks, and safety associated with boiling operations and detail
procedures that can be implemented to reduce those problems.
11. Improve the design of heat exchanger in your daily life.
12. Investigate the performance of any home cooling equipment or a system.
13. CORENZA Partners designed a shell-and-tube heat exchanger to operate with a maximum
discharge temperature of a hot stream to be cooled to 40C. Once the unit was installed
and running, the exchanger operated with a discharge temperature of 75C. Rather than
purchase a new exchanger, what options are available to bring the unit into compliance
with the specified design temperature? Include how your answers would be affected if
the unit is a shell and-tube exchanger.
14. Heat Exchanger analysis: Case study 1
A shell-and-tube heat exchanger with 2-shell passes and 12-tube passes is used to heat
water with ethylene glycol. Water enters the tubes at 22 C at a rate of 0.8 kg/s and leaves
at 70 C. Ethylene glycol enters the shell at 110 C and leaves at 60 C. If the overall heat
transfer coefficient based on the tube side is 280 W/m2.K, determine the rate of heat
transfer and the heat transfer surface area on the tube side.Using a software
(Excel/Matlab), investigate the effect of the mass flow rate of water on the rate of heat
transfer and the tube-side surface area. Let the mass flow rate vary from 0.4 kg/s to 2.2
kg/s. Plot the rate of heat transfer and the surface area as a function of the mass flow
rate, and discuss the results.

15. Heat Exchanger analysis: Case study 2
Cold water leading to a shower enters a thin-walled double-pipe counter-flow heat
exchanger at 15 C at a rate of 0.25 kg/s and is heated to 45 C by hot water that enters
at 100 C at a rate of 3 kg/s. If the overall heat transfer coefficient is 950 W/m2.K,
determine the rate of heat transfer and the heat transfer surface area of the heat
exchanger using the -NTU method
Using any software, investigate the effects of the inlet temperature of hot water and the
heat transfer coefficient on the rate of heat transfer and the surface area. Let the inlet
temperature vary from 60 C to 120 C and the overall heat transfer coefficient from 750
W/m2.K to 1250 W/m2.K. Plot the rate of heat transfer and surface area as functions of
the inlet temperature and the heat transfer coefficient, and discuss the results.
