AP Language and Composition

Academic Writing Exploration

Due: Monday, November 27, 2017

You will read a paper I wrote for one of my college English courses, ENGL 120: British
Literature, Medieval to 18th Century. I took this course during my freshman year of college.
Required of English majors, the class provides an overview of canonical British texts and is often
taken by freshmen and sophomores. This specific paper is a literary analysis of Sir Gawain and
the Green Knight, a 14th-century Arthurian romance.

You are reading to identify structural elements and organization and note the expectations of
collegiate, academic writing.

The first page contains my planning notes and an outline. The second page has my initial drafts
of the abstract and counterargument. Pages 3-8 contain the actual paper; note the professors
comments.

For the next portion, I would suggest using different colored highlighters
As you read, label the paper with the following elements:
Abstract (italicized overview)
Introduction
Context/Background Information
Thesis Statement
Body Paragraphs (4)
Topic sentences
Textual evidence
Analysis
Conclusion
Re-stated thesis

Once youve read and labeled the paper, write a 1-page reflection on the following questions:
What is your reaction to the paper? What are its strengths and weaknesses?
How does the paper demonstrate skills and concepts from our AP Language course?
Do you think you will be able to produce a similar piece of writing as a college
freshman? Why or why not?

Submit your reflection on the Google Classroom page. Your reflection should be 1 page,
double-spaced, Times New Roman font size 12. Please indent your paragraphs and follow
expected formatting.
