GRAPH ANALYSIS LAB

Objectives:
Create and interpret graphs
Evaluate Rate of Change using the graph and the formula found on ESRT p.1

Vocabulary: (Type up Definitions)

1. Rate of Change
2. Direct Relationship
3. Inverse Relationship
4. Dynamic Equilbrium

Procedure:
1. Answer the following questions. Be sure to label all answers and show your work for any calculations. All graphing,
ALL YEAR must be done in pencil. If you choose to color code your graph, you may use pencil first, to plot and
connect the dots, and then go over in colored pencil. All graphs must be numbered correctly, labeled clearly and
titled. Write formula as needed and show all work on calculations. Round numerical answers to the nearest tenths
place and highlight your final answer. Arguments expressed in writing should have very clear but concise answers.

Part A: Base your answers to the following questions on Graph A. It represents the flight of two weather balloons
that were released from different locations. Record all answers on the report sheet and show work where
necessary.
1. Was the altitude of the balloons increasing or
decreasing as shown by lines A and B?
2. During the first 4 minutes (time 0 and time 4), how
many meters did A rise?
3. During the first 4 minutes (time 0 and time 4), how
many meters did B rise?
4. During the first 4 minutes, what was the rate of
change for the balloon represented by line A?
5. During the first 4 minutes, what was the rate of
change for the balloon represented by line B?
6. What was the rate of change along line A from time 4
minutes to time 8 minutes?
7. What was the rate of change along line B from time 4
minutes to time 8 minutes?
8. State the relationship illustrated by line A in Graph A.
(Direct/Inverse/Constant/Cyclic)
9. State the relationship illustrated by line B in Graph A.
(Direct/Inverse/Constant/Cyclic)

1
Part B: A cup of hot water was left standing on a lab table. Temperature was measured and recorded at one minute
intervals. Plot the data on Graph B. Be sure to follow all directions listed above. Again record all answers and show
all work on the report sheet. The graph below should be completed in pencil ONLY.

1. Describe the relationship represented by Graph B as one of the following:

(Direct/Inverse/Constant/Cyclic) Then explain what this means precisely.
2. Calculate the rate of temperature change from 0 to 4 minutes.
3. Calculate the rate of temperature change from 4 to 8 minutes.
4. State the independent variable
5. State the dependent variable

Part C: Base your answers to the following questions on your knowledge of density and Graph C which shows the
mass and volume for 5 samples of the mineral
pyrite.

1. According to graph C, what is the density of

pyrite?
2. If a sample of pyrite has a volume of 50 cm3,
what would be its mass?

2
3. The density of pyrite and the density of water (find the density of water on ESRT) were plotted on the same
graph. Which diagram below best represents how the graph should appear?

4. A mineral expands when heated. Which graph best represents the relationship between the change in density
and change in temperature when that mineral is heated? Highlight your choice.

5. A student calculates the densities of 5 different pieces of aluminum, each having a different volume. Which
graph best represents this relationship? Highlight your choice.

Conclusion: The answers to the following questions must be typed up beneath the vocabulary words. Please use full
sentences and refer the Labatory Report Guidelines for complete instructions. Staple your single typed sheet to
the FRONT of this lab activity packet. Make sure your report sheet is complete on the next page.

1. Explain how you can tell simply by looking at a graph, if something is changing at a constant rate, or if the
rate changes (HINT- look at graph A.)
2. Review part A and graph A. How are line A and B similar? How are line A and B different?
3. In Part B, describe the condition that exists for time and temperature between time 12 and time 15.
4. What is the general appearance of a graph line if the dependent variable does not change with time.
5. Explain your choice to question # 4 in part C. Why does this happen to the density of the mineral when it is
heated?
6. Explain your choice to question # 5 in part C.
7. Explain the benefits of representing data in graph form.
