Operation:
O & M MANUAL FOR 2.27 LPM AIR/OIL LUBRICATION SYSTEM, M/S SIEMENS LTD
18
The maintenance needed by these installations must be planned and executed according to
such factors as the required availability, the value of this installation, its usage (intermittent or
multi-shift continuous) and the consequences of a break down (an individual unit performing
some subsidiary task or an important sub-system which would result in the shutdown of a
whole line).
In general the term Maintenance can be broken down into the following three activities:
a. INSPECTION:
The individual point of a particular installation requiring inspection should be put down
"inspection lists" so that it is possible for them to be attended to with adequate thoroughness
by persons of different level of skill.
In the case of large installation there will be different inspection points according to different
periods of service e.g. daily inspection points, monthly inspection points and inspections
shortly before an extended shutdown e.g. holidays.
A low fluid level is usually indicative of a loss of fluid through external leaks. After major
repair work the fluid level can sometimes continue falling slowly for sometime as the system
automatically bleed itself of air.
A high fluid level can be indicative of parts of the system at a higher-level draining while shut
down due to the ingress of air. Water can gain access to the oil system through leaks in
water/ fluid heat exchangers.
Examine all rigid pipes (particularly the connectors), pumps & valves.
O & M MANUAL FOR 2.27 LPM AIR/OIL LUBRICATION SYSTEM, M/S SIEMENS LTD
19
With valves and some hydraulic pumps it is possible to assess the internal wear by
measuring the leakage fluid rate. This also applies to a number of control valves and check
valves.
Although very fine contamination of this size will not actually cause any wear at normal
mechanical fits, it can contribute to erosion in places where the fluid velocity is very high (e.g.
in pressure relief valves, grooves in control valves etc.).
The gravimetric method also says nothing about the composition of neither the solids nor
anything about the size distribution. Gravimetric analysis can only be performed in laboratory
or in a laboratory van specially equipped for fluid analysis.
Particle counting by electronic counting and sorting devices. Such devices can
function completely automatically. However fluids containing water, these devices
cannot analyze mixtures of fluids and fluids with excessive solids content. As they are
very costly, they are normally only found in the laboratories of large companies, filter
manufacturers & fluid suppliers. With suitable calibration, the results can be directly
compared with the contamination classes of NAS or ISO standards.
O & M MANUAL FOR 2.27 LPM AIR/OIL LUBRICATION SYSTEM, M/S SIEMENS LTD
20
Microscopic analysis:
In this case a few precisely - measured drops of fluid are placed on highly absorbent
surface such as a filter paper and the solids remaining on the surface after the fluid has
been absorbed are counted under the microscope. This method also allows an
assessment of the size of the particle distribution and rough estimate of composition e.g.
metal particles, seals residue, silicate, fibers etc. It is a method that allows a quick analysis
to be made on site, where the other methods described can only be performed in the
laboratory or in special equipped vans.
The amount of solids smaller than the pore size of the filters used in the system is also
significant factor because they provide erosion and through a kind of lapping, increase spool
clearances, wear away control surfaces and ruin dynamic sealing elements. Sudden
equipment failure is a rare occurrence but the actual service life of the component is reduced
to a fraction of the design value.
The tests are more important for mineral oil fluids and so should be performed more
frequently because it is constantly being proved that major damage can be caused by
chemical changes, which take place very rapidly although outwardly everything appears
satisfactory, and in order.
If the operator of the system does not have his own laboratory, an agreement can usually be
made with the fluid supplier to perform the tests on regular basis.
When there is only a relatively small amount of fluid involved it is probably cheaper and
simpler to change the fluid periodically in order to avoid the on-going expense of chemical
tests.
O & M MANUAL FOR 2.27 LPM AIR/OIL LUBRICATION SYSTEM, M/S SIEMENS LTD
21
Pressure relief valves normally make a hissing noise when they lift.
An increase in hydraulic pump or motor noise with increasing pressure can be indicative of
erosion or cavitations damage to control surfaces, excessive clearance in displacement
elements or incipient bearing damage. Unpleasantly loud noise from pumps regardless of the
pressure but gaining greatly in intensity as the speed rises is a signal for insufficient boost
pressure or excessive negative pressure in the suction time.
Check Pipes
Examine all pipes, connectors and fitting for leaks and ensure that the pipes are firmly
supported everywhere. Loose pipes can eventually chafe through and fitting can be
overstrained.
Kinks and crush points increase the flow resistance causing loss of power and overheating.
In actual practice the division between inspections, servicing and repair are not so strict as
definitions would suggest. It is common, for example, for servicing to be carried out at the
same time as inspection.
b. SERVICING:
The main servicing work involves:
The fluid should also be changed when the fine contamination (i.e. the content of solids
smaller than the pore size of the system filters) has increased to a point where greater long-
term wear must be anticipated (e.g. over 250,000 particles between 5 and 15 mm per 100
ml). Expensive purification processes such as centrifuging (if the type of fluid will allow) or
filter presses are only economical if the quantity of fluid is large. Since the amount of fluid in
the actual system, i.e. pumps, pipes, control gear and cylinders, is sometimes several times
O & M MANUAL FOR 2.27 LPM AIR/OIL LUBRICATION SYSTEM, M/S SIEMENS LTD
22
more than the capacity of the tank it is not enough to change just the amount of fluid in the
tank. This is especially true if the old fluid is already showing signs of chemical instability.
The oil tank must be cleaned out every time the fluid is changed.
An important point to remember, both when topping up and changing the whole quantity of
fluid, is that new fluid as-supplied is not normally immediately suitable for use in a lubricating
system due to the quantity of solids which it contains. The chain of supply from manufacturer
to end-user is often very long, passing through storage tanks; sea and road-going tankers,
tank cars and various types of container, and the required purity cannot be guaranteed.
Therefore, for topping-up and for complete renewal the new fluid must be passed through a
suitable filter first. Its pore size must be at least equal to that of the filters fitted in the system
but it is better for it to be smaller.
This is a very important point requiring close attention otherwise there is a possibility of
malfunctions immediately after the fluid has been changed.
Filter elements should also be cleaned every time the fluid is changed.
The amount of clogging of a filter element can only be discovered from the pressure drop
across it since nothing can be seen with the naked eye. Without artificial aid, the human eye
is only able to see particles larger than about 45 to 50 microns in size.
Re-Adjusting Pressures
Readjust all pressure settings - pressure relief valves in the working circuit, control circuit and
low-pressure circuit.
O & M MANUAL FOR 2.27 LPM AIR/OIL LUBRICATION SYSTEM, M/S SIEMENS LTD
23
c. TROUBLE SHOOTING:
Fault Finding
It requires a systematic approach, one of the basic necessities for which is the easy
availability of all the relevant documentation.
Important measuring instruments should also be available close by, especially on the larger
installations. The most important faultfinding tools for a troubleshooter are pressure gauges
of the necessary measuring ranges. In order to maintain accuracy and an acceptable service
life, pressure gauges should normally be chosen so that only 2/3 to 3/4 of the maximum
scale reading is utilized. Pressure gauges can be connected quickly and without loss of fluid
through Minimess quick-release connectors and hoses of 1.8 to 2.4 mm bore. It is important
to re-seal the connecting points afterwards with the screw caps to keep out dirt and to protect
the sealing surface.
Repair
Action taken to restore the status quo i.e., to re-establish wear margins and reserves and
restore loss of performance.
With oil lubrication installations the term loss of wear margins and reserves means
Each one of these forms of wear slowly uses up the reserves provided at design stage until
the point is reached where either a component fails abruptly or prescribed reference valves
cannot be attained. The latter is not always identical to the failure of the piece of equipment.

24
STANDARD TOOLS
Fault Rectification
Another very important factor after the failed item of equipment has been pinpointed is to
ascertain whether the failure has caused any contamination of the remainder of the system
due to broken pieces of metal or large quantities of metal residue.
If inspection of the filters or tank reveals such contamination, it is absolutely essential for the
whole installation to be cleaned, e.g. by flushing, before it is returned to service. The filter
elements should also be changed and, depending on the particular type of installation, it
might be necessary to change the fluid.

Check valves
Causes wear on ball and seats creating leakage. Dirt in valves permits fluid to by-pass
the check valve
Relief valve
Causes chatter. Accumulated dirt causes relief valves to fail safe and pressure
becomes erratic, which affects function of entire system.
Fluid
Acts as a catalyst and breaks down molecular structure causing gummy residue
varnish. Dirt in the tank attracts additives and changes composition of the fluid.
System
The systems malfunction due to dirt can result in serious damage to equipment,
safety hazards, scraping of parts due to poor finishes, insufficient pressure as well as
higher hydraulic fluid costs with resulting increase in disposal problems.

Jaw Type Overview
Jaw Type CouplingsUSA Standard
JW
Elastomer-in-Compression
The Jaw Type couplings from Lovejoy are offered in the industrys largest variety of
stock bore/keyway combinations. These couplings require no lubrication and pro-
vide highly reliable service for light, medium, and heavy duty electrical motor and
internal combustion power transmission applications. Other features and benefits L COUPLING
include:
Fail-safe will still perform if elastomer fails.
No metal to metal contact.
Resistant to oil, dirt, sand, moisture and grease.
More than 850,000 combinations of bore sizes.
Most types available from stock in 24 hours.
The Lovejoy Jaw Type coupling is available in a variety of metal hub and insert
materials. Hubs are offered in sintered metal, aluminum, bronze, steel, stainless
steel, and ductile iron. AL COUPLING
L Type
This coupling offers standard shaft-to-shaft connection for general industrial duty
applications. Standard L type coupling hub materials are either sintered iron (L035
- L150) or cast iron (L190 - L276).
LC Type
This is the basic L coupling, except the insert is a snap wrap elastomer with retain-
ing collar. Designed for easy elastomer replacement without disturbing the hubs, SS COUPLING
this coupling type is suited for applications over 1750 RPM.
AL Type
The aluminum construction means this coupling is light weight with low overhung
load and low inertia. The AL type also offers excellent resistance to atmospheric
conditions, so it is perfect for corrosive environment applications.
SS Type
New SS type stainless steel hubs available for applications needing maximum pro- RRS COUPLING
tection against harsh environmental conditions. Sizes SS075-SS150 available from
stock. Other sizes available on request.
RRS Type
The center drop out section of this coupling provides proper shaft separation
while also allowing easy elastomer installation without disturbing the hubs or
requiring realignment of shafts. Designed for the pump industry, it accommodates
American and European industry standard pump/motor shaft separations. The
drop out spacer is made of glass reinforced plastic, cast iron or aluminum. SW COUPLING
SW Type
This coupling is the standard L Type with a snap wrap elastomer with retaining
ring. It is well suited for standard shaft-to-shaft connection in general industrial pur-
pose applications under 1750 RPM.
C & H Types
These couplings provide standard shaft-to-shaft connection for medium (C)
and heavy (H) duty range applications. The standard C coupling hub is made C & H COUPLINGS
of cast iron, while the H is constructed of ductile iron.
The new Jaw In-Shear coupling is presented in the next section of this catalog,
labeled JIS on the page tabs

Jaw Type Overview
Elastomers-in-Compression
JW
Lovejoy offers four types of elastomer designs to allow for additional flexibil-
ity in addressing specific application requirements. One piece designs are
used in the L and AL models (referred to as spiders) and multiple part
load cushions are used in the C and H model couplings. The load cush-
ions are in sets of 6 to 14 pieces depending on coupling size.
! WARNING
You must refer to page iv for Important Safety Instructions and Precautions
for the selection and use of these products. Failure to follow the instructions
and precautions can result in severe injury or death.

1. General
Hydraulic pumps apply the displacement principle for converting mechanical into hydrostatic energy (DIN ISO 1219-1). The pumps
described in this pamphlet are constant delivery pumps.
' Application
These pumps serve generally to supply pressuriced fluid to hydraulic consumers in hydraulic systems.
The maximum permissible drive power is 30 kW, depending on size.
' Basic types (bearing design)
R - Traditional version, where the eccenter is a roller bearing, suited even for very low speed ratings 1.2
RG - New version, where the eccenter is a slide bearing, suited for fluids with bad lubrication characteristic (e.g. HFC) but not
for low revolution ratings as this would prevent the generation of the necessary lubricating film.
' Mechanical design
Radial piston pumps are valve controlled with cylinders in a radial arrangement. The cylinder radials in one, two or several su-
perimposed layers (stars) are driven by bearings fitted eccentrically on the drive shaft (piston pressure stroke), then being re-
turned to their idle position by springs (piston intake stroke). The fluid being delivered by the various cylinders is collected via
manifolds feeding one joint pressure port. The pump housing shells are load-bearing elements supporting the cylinders and shaft
bearings. The pumps run very smoothly as the drive shaft is statically balanced via counter weights. With the exception of the
single- and double-cylinder pumps, there is always an uneven number of pistons per cylinder radial, which minimizes any pulse
effect on the pump delivery.

1) The operating pressure should be restricted for applications with continuous operation where the subsequent load cycles are all at the up-
per end of the pressure range (>75%) e.g. accumulator charging etc.
It is advisable for an economic service life of the bearings to restrict the operating pressure of the respective pump element diameter to
about 75% of its original specification. Another pump with smaller but more pump elements should be selected, if this is not possible.

5.2 Slightly charged pumps (above approx. 0.4 ... 0.5 bar)
Standard: The drive shaft is sealed to the outside on the shaft journal by two subse-
Sealing lips facing quent shaft seals. The sealing lips of these seal rings face towards each oth-
towards each other- er with standard applications. This is advantageous as it prevents air enter-
no suffix ing during the intake (vacuum in the pump housing) and no fluid can escape
even if the fluid level is located higher than the suction port (slight overpres-
sure in the pump housing, due to the weight of the oil column).
The pumps are also available with both sealing lips facing to the inside ad-
visable for conditions where the tank is located much higher than the pump
Version R .. A : (i.e. several meters) or a tank is permanently pressurized (ps > 0.4 bar).
Sealing lips facing to Please note, however, that any charge pressure above 1 bar (2 ... 3 bar is still
the inside, for intake admissible) may considerably reduce the service life of the sealing lips. It is
pressure exceeding therefore only acceptable, when the pump stands still for prolonged periods
approx. 0.4 bar between operation.

Ball Valves
Pister Ball Valves are used in all sectors of industry, their name being associated
with quality, high performance and innovation. Full opening, ease of operation under
high pressure and other design features characterize Pister Ball Valves.
Housing, shaft, ball and seals are available in various materials. By individual
selection of different material combinations Pister ball valves can be used in all
industrial applications.
Pister ball valves are used worldwide to control hydraulic oils, all other type of oil,
fuels, water, water based emulsions, air gases and liquid chemicals.
In applications with crystalizing media or media containing solid particles, where the
seals of the ball are subject to extremely high wear, the valves can be supplied with
metal seals, or aluminium oxide ceramic material and ceranox.
Tested in accordance with DIN 2470, type 1 or 2, or API-SPEC 6D, BS5146, type 1
and 2, when used with high-pressure gases.

4. Description:
The pressure filters of the series HP 61-151 are suitable for a working pressure up to 420 bar.
The pressure peaks are absorbed by a sufficient margin of safety. The HP-filter is in-line mounted.
The filter element consists of star-shaped, pleated filter material which is supported on the inside by a perforated core tube and is
bonded to the end caps with a high-quality adhesive. The flow direction is from outside to the inside. Filter elements are available
down to 4 m(c).
INTERNORMEN-Filter elements are known as elements with a high intrinsic stability and an excellent filtration capability, a high dirt-
retaining capacity and a long service life.
INTERNORMEN-Filter are suitable for all petroleum based fluids, HW-emulsions, most synthetic hydraulic fluids and lubrication oils.
INTERNORMEN-Filter elements are available up to a pressure difference resistance of p 160 bar and a rupture strength of p 250 bar.
The internal valves are integrated into the centering pivot for the filter element.
After reaching the opening pressure the by-pass valve causes that an unfiltered partial flow passes the filter. With the reverse valve
a protection of the filter element is given when having a reverse flow inside the filter. The reverse flow will not be filtered.

5. Description:
The AE 30 and AE 40 pollution indicators are electrical differential pressure indicators.
The AE 50 to AE 80 pollution indicators are combined optical and electrical differential pressure indicators. These differential
pressure indicators can be fitted to all pressure filters p 420 bar for which there is a corresponding assignment on the relevant
dimension drawing. As the degree of pollution of the filter element rises, so the difference between the entry pressure p1 and the
exit pressure p2 of the filter increases. Depending on this pressure difference and irrespective of the operating pressure, in the
pollution indicators
- AE 30 and AE 40, two electrical signals (contact maker/contact breaker) are triggered
- AE 50 and AE 62, two electrical signals (contact maker/contact breaker) are triggered and one optical signal is formed
- AE 70 and AE 80, two electrical signals (contact maker/contact breaker) are triggered and two optical signals are formed.
A metering piston subjected to the entry and exit pressure moves against a metering spring according to the pressure differential.
Depending on the path a permanent magnet integrated in the metering piston activates a reed contact (electromagnetic switch)
and triggers the electrical signal. The electrical and optical indication is effected as a digital signal at the given switching pressure.
Versions 50 to 80 of the pollution indicator are fitted with additional LED displays. The optical LED signal becomes visible
according to the selected version in the translucent cover plate of the line box on the pollution indicator.
In the pollution indicators
- AE 50 and AE 62, the red LED signal that the filter element needs to be changed
- AE 70 and AE 80, the green LED signal the normal operating state ( filter element not yet polluted to an unacceptable level),
while the red LED signal that the filter element needs to be changed.
6. Operating instructions:
Normally filters are supplied with mounted clogging indicator. When retrofitting - the filter is to be discharged of the operating
pressure.
- dismantling the screw plug out of the bare hole which is foreseen for the clogging indicator
- screw in the clogging inidcator into the bare hole (starting torque 125 Nm)
It is necessary to make sure the availability and the right positioning of sealing parts
- O-ring 22 x 2 and
- O-ring 14 x 2
as well as a dirt-free mounting. The electrical contacts are to be connected according to the graphical symbol shown on the type
plate of the clogging indicator.
7. Maintenance:
The device is maintenance-free, however, note that no cleaning fluids and solvents get on the transparent cap of the optical
indicator.

Features :
Rugged gland less construction to provide safety in handling toxic, flammable
& highly corrosive liquid.
Suitable for glass attacking liquid, where conventional gauge glass can not be
used.
Option of providing continues transmitter for remote indication & control and
adjustable level switch for alarm & control.
Construction & Operations :
It consists of a chamber and an internal float in non-magnetic material,
compatible with the liquid. The float containing a magnetic system rides on the
liquid level and is coupled to an external visual indicator, which comes in two
options. The simpler & economical design consists of a RED magnetic follower
capsule, that moves within a glass tube filled with water (to reduce friction) (fig.
1-a) and can be read against a scale. The other system is expensive and consists
of a series of bicolour flappers. WHITE on front side and contrasting RED on the
reverse. These flappers rotate corresponding to float movement, thus changing
their colour from WHITE to RED as the float rises and vice-versa when the float
falls. As such the liquid level represented by an external RED column (fig.1-b).

The Bimetal thermometer employs a bimetal strip in the form of helix (it works on the principle of thermal
expansion - two metals having different coefficient of expansions are joined to form a bimetal. The resultant
expansion of bimetal is proportional to temperature). Bimetal dial thermometers are simple in construction,
yet rugged. They are used for measurement of temperature in most of the industrial applications. They are
offered in the range of (-) 500C to 6000C. With rigid stem having bottom or back entry. It can also be
offered in every angle rotatable construction.

4. Description:
Return-line filters in the TEF series are suitable for a working pressure up to 145 PSI. Pressure peaks will be absorbed by a suf-
ficient margin of safety.

The filter element consists of a star-shaped, pleated filter material which is supported on the inside by a perforated core tube
and is bonded to the end caps with a high-quality adhesive. The flow is from outside to inside. Filters finer than 40 m should
use throw-away elements made of paper or Interpor fleece (glass fiber). Filter elements as fine as 5 m (c) are available; finer fil-
ter elements on request.
INTERNORMEN-Filters can be used for petroleum-based fluids, HW emulsions, water glycols, most synthetic fluids and lubri-
cation fluids. Consult factory for specific fluid applications.

Fig. 2 Stage 1
Stage 2
When the control piston (1) uncovers the connecting pas-
sage (2), lubricant is transferred to the right end of the
dispensing piston (3), thereby displacing it to the left in the
direction of arrow (A). The lubricant volum e ahead of the
dispensing piston is tr ansferred via the connection pas-
sage (4) to the lubrication point. With the dispensing pis-
ton in its terminal position, the pressure in main line I will
continue to rise to reach the preset change-over pressure
of the two-line system. At this stage, the change-over
valve of the sys tem operates to connect m ain line I which
has so far been under press ure to the lubricant reservoir
of the lubrication pum p and the lubricant in main line I is

line II to the lubrication pump, thus pressurizing the lubri-
cant in this main line. The control piston (1) moves in the
direction of arrow (B), displacing the lubricant ahead of
the control piston into the relieved m ain line.

Adjustment of the Output Volume
Variation KR for infinitely variable adjustment and visual
indication
Infinitely variable adjustment of the lubricant output is
achieved by turning the adjusting screw (8-2). Maximum
output is available if the adjusting screw is in its upper-
most position. By turning the screw downward the output
can be continuously reduced. It reaches nearly zero as
soon as the adjusting screw is in the fully closed position
and the indicator pin (8-3) is completely restrained. The
indicator pin, which is attached directly to the dispensing
piston, shows the correct functioning of a pair of outlets ,
as it makes the stroke of the dispensing piston visible
from outside. The movement of the indicator pin shows
that the metering device supplies lubricant. As soon as
the output volume has been adjusted, the adjusting screw
(8-2) is locked with a lock screw (8-1).

To secure the setting, lock the adjusting
screw only with the indicator pin being
