Comments/Criticisms
Communication is very important when it comes to work. Smooth relationship to others
resulted from their good communication to them. I agreed that communication aims to transfer and
implement the meaning of symbols from one person, group or organization to another. I also
agreed that communication is the life blood of the nation. With good communication to others
comes a peaceful relationship which results to a united country. Also, the ultimate goal of this
communication is sharing of meaning. We share our own ideas, experiences and beliefs in life to
others.
I agreed that communication is also a dynamic process in which man consciously or
unconsciously affects the cognition of another. We affect others through materials or agencies used
in symbolic ways.
I strongly believed that through communicating ideas and information, actions and
coordination make possible. Because of our exchange of ideas and information to others, we come
up to a better result. We do some actions that can help the organization in achieving its goals.
There are 5 main elements of communication process that was given. These are sender,
receiver, message, pathways and feedback. Although the portrait of these elements are not
readable, thankfully, each element was explained clearly in a way that students can understand
these elements of communication process.
I also want to commend that including an example of communication loop in this handout
about communication is very important. Through this example, people can fully understand about
whose people represent each element of communication process in an organization.
I agreed that in a business world, communication is needed to establish and disseminate
goals for an organization, develop plans for their achievement, organize resources in the most
efficient and effective manner.
In the diagram showing the communication in the management process, the hope that it
should be explained clearly. What is the essence of this diagram without explaining it? I also want
to know the use of communication in planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling.
There are two types of communication. These are according to number of people involved
and levels of sources and receiver. I agreed that intrapersonal communication occurs when the
sender and receiver is the same person. While interpersonal communication requires 2 people
interacting with each other. In a workplace, the meeting of the supervisor with his employees is an
example of group communication. On the other hand, mass communication takes place with an
indefinite number of people or faceless audiences like in television and radio.
When it comes to levels of sources and receiver, each level was explained very clear. I
agreed that these levels of sources and receiver is very important in chain of command. I only want
to commend that I think it is needed to include an example on the horizontal, circular and cross
channel/diagonal communication to fully understand these levels of sources and receiver.
In the topic, ways of communicating in organization, I think it is important to explain why
each formal and informal channels are included in each work setting. And also, what is the
difference between formal and informal channels? I hope that it will be explained clearly.
I agreed that the best way to view communication is in terms of a configuration of
interacting elements. Communication should be designed so that various elements complement
rather than negate its other.
There are 9 factors affecting the quality of communication. Thankfully, each factor were
explained. The first factor is goal clarity. I agreed that communication is intended to elicit actions
towards the achievement of certain goals. The sender must clarify the goals if action is to be
possible at all. I think management by objectives (MBO) is very important in an organization.
Each organization must have this because MBO ensures that the objectives are clear to both the
organizations and the individuals or the workers involved.
The second factor is the sender. It is said that senders qualities, characteristics, status and
role affects communication. But how does it affects communication? What is the effect of senders
qualities, characteristics, status and role to the organization?
Like the sender, it is said that receivers qualities, characteristics, status, role and emotional
state is a factor in the success or failure of communication. But how can it affect the
communication? They gave an example of sender and receiver but I do not know what the
connection of these examples are to the communication especially to the organization.
The fourth factor is the shared experience. I agreed that experience common to workers
help enhance the communication process. Because of these common experiences, workers will
understand one another and can enhance their communication and can improve their relationship
with each other. I also agreed that the greater the area of experience, the greater the likelihood that
communication would succeed.
The fifth factor is the symbol. I agreed that communication is largely symbolic. It is
achieved through the use of symbol in both verbal or words and non-verbal or through pictures,
actions and inaction.
Medium is the way where communication takes place. Some examples of medium where
take are typical letter, bulletin board, lecture, demonstration, slide, projected transparency, radio
broadcast, ring or bells, painting, song and drawing.
The seventh factor is the pathway. It is said that it is the passage through which the message
travel and it can either be clear or clogged up with physical or psychological disturbances. But
what are these physical or psychological disturbances? How can these disturbances affect the
message of the communication?
Due to fast technological processes of accumulating and transmitting information through
the radio, tv, satellite network, telecommunications and newspaper. I agreed that many of the
managers were drowning in a flood of numbers, data, information and indices. Their failure to
cope effectively with such information overload will have a serious and even disastrous
consequences not only for the organization but for the entire economy.
The last factor is the feedback. I agreed that it is the reaction by the recipient to the
communication is the main criterion that determines its success or failure. The success or failure
of the communication is in the hands of the receiver's feedback because he is the one to take some
actions about this communication.
I agreed that anything that can impede the flow of communication in any form and at any
point is a barrier or communication. There were 3 barriers or communication that was given. These
areas physical, social and psychological barriers.
In physical barriers, I agreed that include impediments in relation to distance, timing
efficiency of modes used like telephone, telegraph or post office amenities.
It is said that social barriers are the differences between the sender and receiver in certain
factors like age, financial status, educational and family background, intellectual ability, religion,
health status may deter the flow or the understanding of message that are sent. But how can these
factors given affect the communication between the sender and the receiver?
When it comes to psychological barriers, I agreed that it is the most difficult area to tackle
in communication because of individual differences of workers. But how can envy, jealousy,
unpleasant feelings and emotions caused by insecurity and conflict be given outlets for expression?
How people who are charge with these psychological barriers can manage these outburst?
Transactional analysis is an analysis of the verbal transaction between two persons. But
how about the non-verbal communication? Is there any analysis with this kind of communication?
It is also said that this transactional analysis can help interpersonal communication based on study
of ego states of the person communicating with each other. These ego states are parent, child and
adult.
It is said that ego states are sets of thoughts, feelings behaviors and gestures. But how can
these sets of thoughts, feelings behaviors and gestures can affect the communication? Are there
also effects of ego states to the organization?
It is also said that these three stages are not necessarily related to the chronological age of
a person. But how can they came up with this assumption? Is there any basis for these assumption?
Seriously, I did not understand the meaning of parent ego. They gave some characteristics
of this parent ego but are not readable. I hope that they will give some characteristics in a way that
it can be read by the readers and were explained clearly.
I agreed that when a fifty old man who shows impulsiveness, stubbornness, rebellion,
manipulative behavior may be said to take on a child ego state. He shows some actions that are not
fit with his age. I also agreed with the characteristics of this child ego state that were given. I hope
that they explain these characteristics.
When it comes to adult stage, it is said that whatever chronological age is of a person, if he
reflect logical, rational behavior he is considered to be an adult. But how can they come up with
this assumption? What are their basis? Is there any proof that when an individual reflect logical,
rational behavior he is considered to be an adult?
There were three responses pattern when a person sends a message. These are
complementary, crossed and ulterior transaction.
I agreed that complementary transaction is the term used when a message sent to one ego
state gets predicted or expected response from the other individual. Because of this predicted or
expected response from the other individual, the transaction becomes complementary or balance
with the sender and receiver.
The second response pattern is crossed transaction. I did not understand why it is called
crossed transaction wherein it occurs when a message addressed to one ego state gets an expected
response from another ego state. I hope that it will be explained clearly.
I agreed that ulterior transaction involves hidden meaning where one message is on the
observable, social level and one is on the hidden, psychological level.
Thankfully, there were examples given about the complementary, crossed and ulterior
transaction. But I hope that each illustration regarding to the parent, child and adult ego states were
explained. It is hard to understand what it wants to implies to the readers.
There were three modes of behavior displayed when communicating with others. These are
passive, aggressive and assertive behavior. I agreed that when a person fails to express his thoughts
and feelings, he display a passive behavior wherein he does not stand up for the rights being
violated. Because of the failure to express your thoughts and feelings, an individual do not try to
fight for his right. He knows that he will not be given an attention.
When it comes to aggressive behavior, I also agreed that when an individual expresses his
thoughts and feelings and defends his right in a way that is usually inappropriate and often violates
the rights of others he is said to be an aggressive. I think that this aggressive behavior is the reverse
state of passive behavior.
Appropriate behavior is standing up for your rights and expressing your thoughts and
feelings in a direct appropriate way that does not violate the rights of others. I think it is the best
behavior that an individual can displayed when it comes in communicating with others.
In assertive communication, there were three parts of the statement given. These are the
description of behavior, disclosure of feeling that is displayed due to the behavior and its effects.
I agreed that behavior description should be clear, specific and direct instead of being hazy,
general and implicit. Because you are giving a description behavior you must be specific and direct
to the point.
I want to acknowledge for including the difference between a correct behavior description
and an incorrect behavior description. I agreed for all the differences given between the two
because they presented it in a situational setting whether in a work place, classroom situation and
even in your house setting.
I also agreed that being assertive is being frank, candid and sincere without being abrasive.
I also believed that when it comes to assertive communication, one gives other opportunity to
change since they are told how their behavior affects him.
Overall, the handout supplies most of the information needed when it comes to
communication. There were some parts that needed some improvement. I hope that they can
integrate more the communication in the organization. I also want to commend that they should
give more examples for arriving to better understanding.
II. Lessons Learned
In the topic communication I learned that communication is the process which aims to
transfer and implement the meaning of symbols from one person, group or organization to another.
I also learned that communication is the life blood of the nation because good communication with
fellow citizen can result to a united country or community. I also now knew that the ultimate goal
of this communication is sharing of meaning.
I was educated that communication is a dynamic process in which man consciously or
unconsciously affects the cognition of another through materials or agencies in symbolic ways. I
also learned that communicating ideas and information makes actions and coordination possible.
Because of the good communication between the workers in an organization, they make actions
and coordination possible. Good communication is a great help to the organization.
I learned that there were 5 elements of communication and these are: sender, receiver,
message, passage and feedback. I knew that message can be in a form of verbal and non-verbal,
oral and written and textual and visual. I also learned that feedbacks supply the final link to
complete the communication loop. It is which the sender can modify subsequent messages to fit
the receivers responses. I also erudite about the communication loop because of the example that
was given in the handout.
I learned so much that communication is needed to establish and disseminate goals for an
organization, develop plans for the achievement, organize resources in the most efficient and
effective manner, recruit and select members who will compose the organization, direct and
motivate people, and control performance of each member by setting standards, correcting
variations from standards and plans and reaching out the external world.
I also learned that there are 2 types of communication. These are according to number of
people involved and levels of sources and receiver. In numbers of people involved, there are
intrapersonal, interpersonal, group and mass communication. When the sender and the receiver of
the message is one and same person it is called intrapersonal communication. While interpersonal
communication requires 2 people interacting with each other. In group communication, it involves
several people like meeting of the supervisor with his employees. And when a communication
requires an indefinite number of people or faceless audience like television and radio it is said to
be a mass communication.
When it comes to levels of sources and receiver, I was educated that this can be classified
in downward, upward, horizontal, and circular and cross channel/diagonal communication. I
already about the downward, upward, horizontal and circular but the best thing I learned about this
levels of sources and receiver is the cross channel/diagonal communication. It is where the
direction of information flow takes this type of communication in inter-unit exchange, or in an
orientation activities. Communication flows across the chain of command.
When it comes to the ways of communicating in organization, I learned some examples of
formal channels and informal channels from top management, middle management and for rank
and file.
I also learned that there are nine factors affecting the quality of communication. These are:
goal clarity, sender, receiver, shared experience, symbol, medium, pathways, information
overhead and feedback. In goal clarity, I was erudite that communication is intended to elicit
actions towards the achievement of certain goals. The sender must clarify the goals of the action
is to be possible at all. I was also educated about the management by objectives (MBO) approach.
I learned that the objectives are jointly set by both supervisor and subordinate instead of merely
being handed down from top to bottom. This MBO serves to ensure that the objectives are clear to
both the organization and the individual.
I also learned that sender and receivers qualities, characteristics, status role, and emotional
state affect the communication. They serve as factors in the success and failure of the
communication. I also learned some example of sender and receiver in an organization.
When it comes to shared experience, now I knew that experience common to participants
help enhance the communication process. Also, the greater the area of shared experience, the
greater the likelihood the communication would succeed.
I learned that in medium, message can take various form like typical letter, bulletin board,
lecture, demonstration, slide, projected transparency, radio broadcast, ring or bells, painting, song
and drawing.
I also learned that the passage through which the message travels can either be clear or
clogged up with physical or psychological disturbances is called pathways.
One of the best thing I learned about communication is information overhead. Due to fast
technological processes of accumulating and transmitting information through the radio, tv,
satellite network, telecommunications and newspaper. I agreed that many of the managers were
drowning in a flood of numbers, data, information and indices. Their failure to cope effectively
with such information overload will have a serious and even disastrous consequences not only for
the organization but for the entire economy.
I also learned that feedback is the reaction by the recipient to the communication is the
main criterion that determines its success or failure.
I was informed that anything that can impede the flow of communication in any form and
at any point is called barrier of communication. There were three barriers of communication and
there are physical, social and psychological barriers. In physical barriers, I learned that this barrier
includes impediment in relation to distance, timing, efficiency of modes used like telephone,
telegraph or post office amenities. While in social barriers, I learned that difference between the
sender and receiver in certain factors like age, financial status, educational and family background,
intellectual ability, religion, health status may deter the flow or the understanding of message that
are sent. Lastly, in psychological barrier, I learned that it is the most difficult area to tackle in
communication because each individual has its own objectives, drives, beliefs and values that can
affect their communication to others. Envy, jealousy, unpleasant feelings and emotions caused by
insecurity and conflict should be given outlets for expression.
Transactional analysis is new to my hearing. I learned that this transactional analysis is an
analysis of the verbal transaction between two persons. It can also help interpersonal
communication based on the study of ego states of the person communication with each other.
There were three ego states given. These are parent, child and adult. Because I Im not
familiar with these ego states so I learned I lot from it. I learned that ego states are sets of thoughts,
feelings, behaviors and gestures that characterize the predominant condition of the person at the
moment of communication.
I also learned that when a person reflects a logical, rational behavior whatever
chronological age of that person he is said to be an adult. Some characteristics of these ego states
are given and I learned more about these ego states because of these characteristics.
There were three responses pattern when a person sends a message. These are
complementary, crossed and ulterior transaction. I was informed that complementary transaction
was happened when a message sent to one ego state gets predicted or expected response from other
individual. While ulterior transaction involves hidden meaning where one message is on the
observable, social level and one is on the hidden, psychological level. I also learned some examples
of these ego states.
I also erudite about the three modes of behavior displayed when communicating with
others. These are passive, aggressive and assertive behavior. In passive behavior, a person fails to
express his thoughts and feelings and does not stand up for the rights being violated. Because of
not being an expressive about his emotions and feelings, he came up not standing for his right
because he knows that it will not be given an opportunity to be heard. In aggressive behavior, you
express your thoughts and feelings and defending your rights in a way that is usually inappropriate
and often violates the rights of others. While assertive behavior is standing up for your rights and
expressing your thoughts and feelings in a direct appropriate way does not violate the right of
others.
In assertive behavior, I learned that the use of messages is emphasized in the statement
which contains the description of behavior, disclosure of feeling that is displayed due to behavior
and its effects. I also learned some examples of these parts of the statement which is related to the
work place, classroom location and even in the house setting.
I was also educated that the behavior description should be clear, specific and direct instead
of being hazy, general and implicit. Being assertive is being frank, candid and sincere without
abrasive. It aims to make other person know how one feels about certain individuals, issues, rules
and policies so that a better understanding if this is arrived at. And lastly, being assertive is giving
other opportunity to change since they are told how their behavior affects him.
Overall, I learned a lot from this topic communication. I hope that I can use
communication in a better way and use it in my work place someday.
