DESIGN STAGE ROAD SAFETY AUDIT

CHECKLIST POINTS COMMENT

Visibility, Sight Are horizontal and vertical alignments
Distance consistent with the required visibility
requirements?
Will plantation obscure the visibility and
has a maximum height being specified?
Are planation likely to enclose on
markings or lighting?
Confirm whether the standard adopted for
visibility in the design is appropriate for
the ruling design speed for mixed traffic?
Check whether sight lines are obstructed
by : Safety fences, street furniture,
boundary fences, sign boards, bridge
abutments, land scrapings, parking
facilities
Check whether railway crossings, bridges
and other hazards are conspicuous
Cross Sections , Has delineation of the carriageway with a
Gradient, width of kerb been proposed?
CW, Shoulders, etc.
Is there adequate space for all group of
road users?
Is there appropriate separation between
various groups of road users?
Are cross falls appropriate?

Is the carriageway laid at suitable height

above the shoulder?
Check whether the design standards are
appropriate for all new requirements of
the proposed project and check the
consistency of standards and guidelines
for geometry?
Is overtaking prevented at all points where
it is necessitates?
Junctions Are all road users from different arms or
side roads able to see the approaching
conflict area?
Are intersecting roads meeting without
sharp bends and gradients?
Is there sufficient space for all type of
vehicles to undertake manoeuvres?
Are the crossing facilities / lane changing is
adequate and safe for NMT and
Pedestrians?
Can parking cause problems?
Have roundabouts been considered?
At the junctions, are there sudden
changes of alignments noticed in design?
Roundabouts Are all entrance lanes curved and is speed
accurately reduced?
Will the central island be visible?
Are the measures taken for the benefit of
pedestrians from SSD and Cycle traffic
adequate?
Road Surface Has a porous type of surface been chosen?
Is there any requirement of high friction
surface in exposed places?
TCDs Are road markings consistent along the
entire road section?
Is the information is clear?
Are there adequate sign boards in design?
Are there too many signs? Will sign mask
each other or traffic signals?
Are the signs correctly positioned without
obstructing SD and visibility in any way?
At junctions / transition of curved roads,
are sufficient advance warning signs
provisioned?
Is there continuity of edge markings?

Is the text, comprehension are correct as

per IRC standards?
Have all signs been placed positioned
safely?
Will an illuminated side road mislead road
users on the planned major road?
Will powerful illumination of adjoining
areas or strongly illuminated
advertisements cause problems?
Are all vulnerable area protected ?
Are bridge pillars, steel posts, trees etc.,
protected by guard rails where necessary
?
Are there places where hedges are
necessary to prevent pedestrians from
crossing ?
Are the choosen guard rails light enough ?
Do guard rails/ side road furnitures have
any hazardous sharp protruding egdes ?

Misc. Check for the arrangements for temporary

and permanent traffic control devices,
including possible signals, temporary
diversions etc ?
Are there any located adjacent to moving
traffic which could be shifted elsewhere ?
Is a crash barrier provided wherever
necessary with details in design ?
Check provision for pedestrians to cross
safely at intersections , signalized and
pedestrian crossings, refuges, kerb
extensions and at other locations ?
Are median barriers necessary and have
they been properly detailed in design
drawings ?
Is there any unprotected medians width
adequate to accommodate lighting poles
?
Check whether access to structures and
road furniture is safe ?
Check that the design duly considers the
necessity of PwD
