The 2nd International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra has established

itself as an institution aiming to showcase world culture through

documentaries and to export our major industry, the culture of Lassithi, as
well as Cretan and Greek culture in general, across the world. The Festival
will open its doors from August 1 to August 5, 2015, under the auspices of
the Ministry of Culture and the University of Crete, to take us on a journey
around the world.
The Festival will open on August 1, 2015, at 9 pm, with a speech by the head
of the Ministry of Culture, Mrs Tina Pischitzi, in the Town Hall Square
(Paraliaki Plateia Dimarhiou). The program will begin at 9.10 pm with the
performance of Mainades, a choreography by Vicky Filippa in collaboration
with Euphrosyne Arkoulaki, the choreographer of Minoiki Avli (Minoan Court),
followed by a Cretan music and dance program by Dimitris Kaparakis Cretan
School of Dance. At 9.45 pm there will be a screening of documentary film "A
god is born" by director Helen Vlassis, about the Legend of Zeus, Alexander
the Great and Nearchus, at Dikteon Andron. This will be followed at 22:50 by
the screening of "All-weather man", a documentary on the life and career of
Greek actor Thanasis Vengos, directed by internationally acclaimed director
John Soldatos.
On August 2-5, the competing documentaries and tributes will be screened in
Ierapetra and surrounding towns (Kavousi, Mirtos, Makrigialos) and in the
Lassithi Plateau. Specifically, in Ierapetra the films will be screened in the
internal hall of the mosque, starting at noon and ending at 12.30 am every
day. Every evening from 9 pm to 12.30 am there will be screenings of
documentaries outdoors, at the mosque square.
August 5 will be the last day of the Festival. The closing ceremony begins at
9 pm at the mosque square with the award ceremony for the competing
documentaries and for the mantinades (Cretan rhyming couplets) and
poetry prizes. The closing ceremony will end with music and dance and a
Cretan music program.
The winning documentaries of the 2nd International Documentary Festival of
Ierapetra, as well as "A god is born" and "Without Motherland", will be
screened at International Film Festivals in 32 countries around the world. In
Greece, the films will be screened at Peloponnisos International
Documentary Festival, in Heraklion and in Rethymnon under the auspices of
the University of Crete, and will be released in cinemas in Athens. "A god is
born" and "Without Motherland" will also compete in national and
international Festivals.
Come to the south to see images and sounds from all over the world and
learn about different peoples and cultures. Ierapetra, the Gate of the
Mediterranean at the Crossroads of Cultures and Continents, sets off on this
long journey.
