Chapter I: Introduction

Background of the Study

Every generation has its unique defining characteristics, just like

how millennial are being regarded as tech savvy people. We are a

generation that is completely aware of everything going on (James

2009). Our generation is very accessible to new methods of collecting

information. Nowadays, social media has allowed the spread of

information at a rate that has never been seen before. But speedy

methods of communication dont necessarily guarantee that said

information is actually being consumed. Some argue that this

generations increased access to information results in teens being

more informed than any group before them. But others insist that

while young people are exposed to more information, they fail to

accurately learn from it and often neglect real life conversations.

Overusing of internet platforms may often lead to some cases of

extreme reclusiveness of ones self. In interacting by the means of the

internet a person only requires good connection and requires lesser

effort than being in person. Some are able to express themselves

better in the internet than engaging in a real conversation.

2

In conducting the study, the researchers, would like to know the

effects of the internet to the millennial social skills. The study

significantly implies all possible factors of how the internet and the

sociability of a person is being affected which needs to be filled by

conducting further research on the other correlates to present a

comprehensive knowledge of the issue at stake; Are millennial more

sociable because of the internet?

Statement of the Problem and Research Questions

This paper is entitled Are Millennials More Sociaable Because of

the Internet? Specifically, it aims to answer the following research

questions:

1. Is the internet a significant factor in making the millennials more

sociable?

2. Can internet help millennial to conveniently socialize to other

people?

3. What are the factors being affected from using too much of

internet?
3

Research Hypothesis

The following hypotheses were formulated to guide this study:

Ho : The internet is not a significant factor in making the

millennials more sociable.

Ha : The internet is a significant factor in making the millennials

more sociable.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this research will prove useful to the following

entities:

Post-Millennial. Generation Z, specifically students born between

the year 1998-2000 will benefit the study conducted in a way that they

will have a light-bulb moment about too much consumption of

internet.

Internet Users. Those students who frequently use internet will

benefit the study due to their connectivity to the world, there is an

immediate distribution of information and they can create friendship

by socializing through internet.

Social Media. It is used as a vital role for communicating globally

and for our daily social interaction. Its beneficiary is that through
4

social media, it targets a wide-ranging audience, making it a

convenient and effective recruitment tool.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research attempts to answer if the millennials are becoming

more sociable through the use of internet platforms. Primarily the

focus of the study of this research are the senior high students of CIT-

U specifically those students who belong to Generation Z that are born

between the years of 1998-2000. The researchers tend to explore how

millennials are more sociable because of the internet.

It should be noted that the present study did not cover

millennials who are born between the years 1990-1997. Because

mostly the age ranges of the senior high students are born between

the years of 1998-2000.It is delimited that way because it is one of

the most convenient way for the researchers to have respondents that

could probably answer the questions of the said study. It is also the

appropriate age range for our target respondents, the senior high

students.

Chapter II: Review of Related Literature and Studies

Millennials, also known as the Net Generation, are people born

between the early 1980s to early 2000s. According to James (2005),

the Internet is vital in our information age. Hence, the social skills of

an individual are being affected. Today, many people use social media

to connect with one another, to share information and to entertain

themselves. Their comfort level with digital has them engaging online

more often. This Review of Related Literature talks about the effects of

the internet to the millennials social skills. Furthermore, this chapter

aims to enhance the credibility of the research by siting related works.

The research is only applicable inside the Cebu Institute of

Technology- University settings.

The chapter covers the following: concepts, related studies,

synthesis, and conceptual and theoretical framework. First, in the

concepts, definition and description of the research are presented. The

related studies present the related works of the research. In the

synthesis is where the research gap is addressed. Lastly, in this

chapter, conceptual and theoretical framework is presented through

diagram and its explanation to fully understand the research to be

done.
6

In the article The Effects of the Internet to Millennials by Alex

Bans, millennials grow up in 21st Century wherein technology is part of

their everyday life. Technology serves as the instrument to connect

people around the world. The connectivity we get from the use of

technology creates social connection not just locally, but also

worldwide.

Majorities of millennials feel connected most of the time because

of their consumption on their social media account. The mass media,

internet and other sorts of technology have all become major things in

our society. Our technology today supposed to have us a feeling of

being more connected than ever but mostly of the millennials are

being disconnected in some ways. They are connected because of

the high technology gadgets that give them chance to interact and

to socialize to the whole world. On the other hand, millennials are

disconnected to the real world because they prefer to talk indigital

world instead of communicating face-to-face.

In the article Media as an Influence to Socialization by Orville

F. Brim, socialization is known to be as a lifelong process. There

are four main agents of socialization, one of it that affects

7

millennials the most is the Media. The media such as cellphones,

iPods, laptop, and etc surrounds the majority of their time.

The media plays a strong role in the socialization process. By

the use of mass media, millennials nowadays are becoming more

updated on recent events with just a short amount of time.

Furthermore, these Mass Medias lead them to social media sites

that help them to stay in contact with people whom they dont see

very often. On the other hand, the social media sites can lead

millennials to lack of privacy concerns. One of the most used social

media sites is Facebook. With the use of Facebook, it dominates as

a social media platform for news and information. Some of the

millennials dont think before they click. They lack discipline in

expressing their opinions and showing too much information about

themselves.

In the article The Impact of Technology to the Society by

Karehka Ramey, by using technology people can now conveniently

communicate and connect to other people with just one click.

Communication is the most popular use of the Internet. Internet

influences the socialization of a person especially for the millennials.

8

The internet has been a significant part of a persons life specifically to

the millennials.

The purpose of using technology or specifically the internet is to

constantly communicate with other people. In particular, that use of

such "social" technology, may not considered internet as antisocial in

nature, high usage of Internet will likely causes social isolation.

Through the Internet, social relationships are being reconstructed on

the basis of individual interests.

This study sought to verify the personality traits of the social

media users ages 16-19 senior high school students of CIT-U. It

explore the factors that greatly affected the personality of the

resspondents. This aims to create a prevention program for the

respondents to be aware on how social media could probably change

their behaviour. Through the descriptive survey method, 250

participants took the Big 5 Personality test and 20of them were

interviewed. According to Collantes (2017) and Marcellones (2017),

they found out that factors such as self, family and peers mostly

impacted the personality traits of the social media users. Therefore,

this study proves that millenials are active and sociable in social

media. This study does not cover about millenials being sociable as

well in real life.

9

According to Saiidi (2015) as millenials spend more time

engaging themselves to social media, it is causing them to be less

social in real life. Through the descriptive survry method, the study

conducted by flashgap, a phot-sharing application with 150,000 users,

found out that 87% of the users admitted to missing out with the

conversation because they were distracted by their phones. And 57%

experienced fear in missing out if not checking out in social media.

Nearly 3,000 participants were asked about how they felt social media

in social setting. Results show that 76% of females check out there

social media whe out with friends, compared with 54% male.

Social media made things easy in developing connections with

people. The research gap in study is that it does not mention about

millenials being sociable in real life that has been addressed by the

study of Saiidi (2015). In which it proves that millenials were less

social in real lifye for they are much more focus checking out on their

social media even though they were in a social setting such as family

gathering and even with their friend. The research gap of study 2 that

will be addressed by the researchers is that the effects of the use of

internet to the social skills of the millenials.

This research study entitled Are Millennials more sociable

because of the Internet? talks about Millennials, specifically Post-

Millenials, way of interacting people with the use of internet.

Millennials are considered as Net Generation that are born between

early 1980s to 2000s. The focus of this study are those Millenials in

Senior High School students of Cebu Institute of Technology-University

that are born between years 1998-2000.

11

We consider and focus on three factors that affects the

sociability of the Millenials. First is their connectivity. Millenials on this

generation can now connect worldwide with the of the use of their high

tech. gadgets invented by some engineers. Since Millenials can easily

connect and communicate with just a click, they prefer to talk with the

use of their gadgets rather than talking face-to-face which leads them

to disconnection to the real world. Second factor is the Mass Medias

simply means technology that is intended to reach mass audience. The

most common mass media used by the Millennials nowadays is

Facebook. Through their social media account, Millennials become

more updated to recents events happening not only to their friends

and relatives, but also to the world. They can easily stay in contact

with the people. Since the so-called-mass-media or technology intend

to reach mass audience, this can lead to lack of privacy of Millenials

because they input too much information about them. Some

Millennials who are really active to their social media, keep on posting

things or any pictures which are supposed to be kept in private. And a

massive of people can read and see those pictures and

informationsthey input to their social media account. Also, some

information posted or shared through mass medias contains fallacies

which are those false informations spread by someone. The last factor

is the Internet. Through the use of internet Millennials can connect and
12

interact to people conveniently, with just a click of their mouse. Since

Millennials born in the new era of technology, they are relying to

internet in performing their task either for educational purposes or just

simply for online entertaintainment. Millennials uses the internet for

communication.
13

Chapter III: Research Methodology

Research Design

The research design that is used in this particular study is

descriptive research in naturalistic form which observes the subject in

its natural environment. This research aims to understand on how

sociable millennial are. This research study is conducted in CIT-

UNIVERSITY. Respondents of this study are the millennial.

Research Environment

The researcher chose the grade 12 Senior High school students

of Cebu Institute of Technology-University as the respondents of their

research. The participants of the study are determined through

convenience sampling. Out of the total population of 1289 grade 12

students, only those students with age ranging from 17-19 will be

selected as the respondents. The researchers used the formula which

is Slovins formula with a 0.1% margin of error, in this manner a total

of 93 students will be the sample size of the research. Both gender will

be able to answer the survey questions who are present in the

moment as this is research use convenience sampling.

14

Research Instrument

The research instrument used in this study is a combination of a

questionnaire and Likert Scale questionnaire/instrument. It is used so

that the information that will be gathered will be more reliable. The

use of Likert Scale was preferred by most researchers because they

are one of reliable ways to measure opinions, perspective and

behavior. In the said study, researchers aim to find out whether the

respondents specifically Grade 12 SHS Students in CIT University are

sociable or not when it comes to internet. And also to know the

percentage of the milennials who are sociable and not. Likert Scale

instrument is used to gather information that could probably be closer

to the precise answer. This questionnaire includes the personal

information such as the name (optional), age, gender, and the grade

and section. This questionnaire also includes directions so that

respondents can easily understand on how to answer the survey

questionnaire. The questionnaire is composed of open-ended questions

with choices in it. In Likert Scale, it uses simple statements to ensure

that the choices used will fit in the questionnaire. It does not include

loaded questions to prevent interventions within the respondent while

answering. The statements and questions used are simple to make it

convenient for the respondents in answering.

15

Data Gathering and Procedures

In this study, the researchers follows a specific steps and

methods in order to gather information and data. The researchers will

use Convenience Sampling in getting the respondents. There will be

1249 respondents from grade 12 ages 17 to 19. There will be a

distribution of questionnaires for the respondents to answer. And the

researchers will monitor the respondents while answering for some

directions and for possible concerns to be raised.

Data Analysis

This research study deals with several factors that affect the

Millenials sociability through their use of internet. The statistical test

the researcher used is the Pearson-Product Moment Correlation or

PPMC. It uses technique in measuring the strength and the linear

relationship between sets of data. The researcher used two letters, (p)

for population and (r) for the sample, in representing the PPMC.
