Experiment 205 is all about Elasticity: Hookes Law. Elasticity refers to the capability of a
material body to resist stress and return to its original shape and size at the event that the forces causing
its deformation are placed and removed.

In this case, in terms of the springs elasticity, Hookes Law will be explored. Hookes law states
that proportional to force is the length of the extended body. This experiment strives to examine
properties of elasticity of the spring and the total work done on the spring as it is stretched. Specifically,
one would able to investigate and determine the relationship of the deforming force and the amount
stretched by an object.

The initial experiment is about determining the force constant of a spring in the system. As shown
in Table 1A and Table 1B, there is an evident relationship between the applied force and the force
constant since the formula of the spring force is = where force has direct proportionality to the
spring force constant. Ergo, as the force applied increases then the spring constant increases and vice
versa, considering the displacement constant throughout.

The succeeding experiment centers on the determination of work done on a spring. Since there is
an application of force and displacement in the spring, then it can be concluded that there is also work
done. Getting the product of the application of force and displacement in the spring would not equal to the
area under the graph since the product of the two would be the area of a square. Based on the graph of a
force vs. displacement of a spring, it will form a triangle. Thus, we can calculate the area by using the
1
area of the triangle which is = , where F is the spring force. The calculated area is also the work
2
1
done by the spring, which we can write as = 2 2 . The ratio of the slope of the graph in the force vs.
displacement representation shows the relationship of the force and displacement. The slope of the graph
is also defined as the spring force constant which is related to the formula of the spring force.

The final experiment is about determining the force constant of the springs in series and in
parallel. We managed to determine that when the springs are in series then the spring constant becomes
less yet, when the springs are parallel, the spring constant becomes more.

An error that is probable in this experiment can happen in the process of aligning the stretch
indicator to zero line reading and the change in displacement of the spring when there is application of
force.
