WHICH RECEIVED BIOTROP awards school garden action research GRANTS WHERE I
HAD INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT WHEN WHERE AND HOW RESEARCH
GRANTS CAN BE RECEIVED BY THEM.

THIS IS THE NEWS,

WHAT IS SCHOOL GARDEN? a proven tactic for improving childrens attitudes and
consumption of produce, and for incorporating experiential nutrition and agriculture
education into school curriculum

BASED ON Benefits-of-School-Gardens-Denver-Urban-Gardens.pdf IN studies say that

students involved in school gardens generally enjoy learning and show positive attitudes
towards education, tend to eat more fruits and vegetables and continue healthy eating habits
through adulthood, and have increased self-understanding, interpersonal skills, and
cooperative skills when compared to non-gardening students,

could such findings be the same in Indonesia!

SEAMEO Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP) inviteD primary and secondary
school teachers in Indonesia to submit action research proposals focused on Enhancing
Student Literacy and Nutrition and entrepreneurship through School Garden for
implementation In 2017, WHICH conducted in March 2016 in Bogor. This training benefited
53 primary, vocational, special education, and secondary schools from nine provinces in
Indonesia.

The initiative to provide action research grants is part of BIOTROPs 5-year road map for its
School Garden Project that started in 2016.

Dr. Jesus C Fernandes as Deputy Director for Programme and Marketing SEAMEO
BIOTROP during announcement said the school garden specifically aims to
(1) To establish empirical data and best practices on the benefits of school garden in
improving the literacy, nutrition, and entrepreneurial skills of school students in Indonesia;
(2) To enhance the capacities of school teachers in Indonesia in conducting action research;
and (3) To generate learning and promotional materials on the benefits of school gardens
based on the research results of the grantees.

BIOTROPs School Garden Project took off from SEAMEO Colleges Project on
Participatory Action Research on School/and Community-based Food and Nutrition Program
for Literacy, Poverty Reduction, and Sustainable Development initiated in 2016 through
funding support from the Japan Fund for Poverty Alleviation through the Asian Development
Bank.

AND FINALLY BIOTROP awards school garden action research grants to four Indonesian
schools.

Four schools in Indonesia became the first batch of recipients of BIOTROPs action research
grants this year for its School Garden for Improvement of Student Literacy, Nutrition, and
Entrepreneurship Project.

The action research projects and the recipient/target schools are as follows:

1. Effects of Developing Urban Agriculture Thematic Gardens to Increase Academic

Achievements of Students at the National Vocational School No. 5, Bandung, West Java
2. Improving Self-reliance in Learning Through Hydroponic Gardening Using Task Analysis
